EBS without a doubt - its what Bernie develops the circuit with. HD350 or TD650 or the Reidmar if you want cheaper. See if you can get a proline cab too.
Yep. Wonderful bass Marcus.

pre EB MM Porn Thread Stingrays/Sabres etc
Apothem replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in Gear Gallery
Just wanted to ask (to Pete and to anybody owning an early and a late pre-EB), is the sound absolutely the same? (Given the same woods and strings). I mean: is a 78 or 79 (apart from the earlier epoxy-coated preamps ) sounding exactly like a 82 or 83? Actually the bridge went to top-loading so they may not sound exactly the same.... -
I didn´t know that. But let me tell you, compared to it my 88 EB just sounds relly lame (although the neck is just amazing!)
I'll let you have my pearl of wisdom here LOL... Personal experience: I have had a '78 pre-EB, an '88 and still have an '89 (a number of more recent 'Rays have come and gone in the meantime), all maple, and they were all very different beasts. Pre-EB (epoxy-coated preamp) was the warmest, with a nearly "nasal" honk. The '89 (still 2-eq) is hard to tame: much more aggressive in terms of punch and attack (I put it down mainly to the top-load bridge instead of through-body). Even the preamp sounds very different, more extreme, with bass going to booming lows and treble that many could consider harsch if rolled beyond a certain limit. The '89 was a 3-eq, so it was somewhere in the middle for different reasons, not completely comparable (though still maple). For fingerstyle, the pre-EB was definitely superior, while for slap I tended to prefer the slightly more modern (think Flea) '89. Moreover, because of the depth of the heel and the old bridge design, I could not reach a decent low action on the pre-EB, while on the '89 the strings are virtually sitting on the frets. Having said that, I can still appreciate the warmth of the pre-EB. Current production of "standard" 'Rays is what I don't like, with the "unfinished" neck and a general "clickety-clackety" tone (to my ears). I also have a Classic (two actually, one of which for sale) which is probably as warm as the pre-EB, although slightly more scooped, like the '78 but with less mids (or with less hi-mids and more lo-mids). The construction quality of the Classic is just superb, and the neck is rounded and varnished like in the old days. -

I have bought a Stingray Classic 4 from Gilian. He was quick in responding to messages and sent the bass the day after receiving payment. The bass was in great condition and it was a very smooth transaction. Claudio (Apothem)
I'd go with these as a rule of thumb; Bottom about £650 if its a bit shabby, no case or just an absolute steal off ebay at 3 am (they are out there) Tops £850 tidy with case and a tasty unusual colour maybe. Unless its a pre EB £1150 dog rough-£2100 mint 1987ish-1993ish £700 dog rough-£1300 mint
I couldn't agree more with Pete's evaluations. Maybe we could add Classic 4 at £1100-1300.

Musicman Stingray 4. 3 Band EQ. 1992 Olympic White. **SOLD**
Thats the best era of Ray IMO, 6 bolt neck, wheel of fortune, muted bridge, figured neck and the contoured body. You cant get that combination any other way
Couldn't agree more, beautiful specimen from the golden era of late '80s - early '90s. And it looks like the whole neck is still glossy, brilliant!! -
Thanks for Dating this bass, i know some one would no, thanks Apothem
You're welcome. I've had nine Stingrays, from '70s pre-EB to current ones, and one Sterling, so I have learnt a few things about them. For those who prefer not to remove the neck in order to check the stamp date, often on the preamp/pots in the electronics cavity there is a dated sticker. Here there have been a few mods so the sticker may have disappeared, but it's still worth having a look. I would not rely too much on pots codes/dates, they were often ordered in massive bulks and left laying around for years before being utilised...

The Flea bridge (but still with mutes), the 6-bolt plate, the matt finish... all point straight to 1992-93. But do not get me wrong, this is a cracking specimen, from what many (included myself) consider a golden era for 'Rays (late '80s - early '90s), in a sought after colour, with great birdseye and professional mods. All the best with the sale, somebody should be very happy.
Wow! Mine is 28193! Didn't think they'd be THAT close! My fretless is 28480
Unbelievable, only 4 serials apart! Obviously from the same colour/birdseye/clear pickguard batch... Funny how they turned up to be both here.... They really are twins.
-
Wow! Cool that we both have the same bass virtually. What's the Serial No. on yours? Just wondering how close together they were built! I've also got a matching Fretless but with 3 band EQ and unlined Pau Ferro board - The serial numbers are literally only 300 odd apart!
Serial is 28197 - April '89
