Sounds a bit weird I know but the guy offered to buy it straight out, and after a bit of thought I realised there was something of his that I wouldn't mind having that I know he's trying to sell. PM'd him to this effect but he hasn't got back to me yet. Don't expect a problem, just a bit unclear what the deal's gonna be. Did you get a chance to try it BTW? Been meaning to ask. Update - Friday: it's a trade.
 2. Wal Custom is now on hold pending the usual..
 3. On hold pending the usual stuff. Fingers crossed we can do the deal.
 4.
Gone to a very good home
Bugger! Someone's got a gem!
 5.
I only paid £800 for it 5 years ago so didn't think 7 was too bad. When I put it up I was expecting 7 and thats what I got, but I thought it was going to someone who was going to use it. Apparantley it was a BC'er who bought it on ebay, so maybe a lesson to keep an eye on the for sale ads? Good luck with the sale anyway Andy
Thanks mate. Good luck with the job interview.
 6.
Last night's rehearsal started like any other. I plugged into the bass rig provided in room 3, a Behringer HA3000 through a Peavey 410TVX. I fiddled with the parametric eq until I achieved an approximation of 'my sound' and the rehearsal began. Now I'd heard previously about bass frequencies hanging around in corners like a bunch of chavs with a spiff and also seen 'corner bass traps' advertised in the Studio Spares catalogue but, half way through the rehearsal, the vocalist vacates his spot in the corner to my right and drags his mic and stand to the centre of the wall opposite the drums. Being the wandering minstrel that I am, I moved over into the vacated corner and . The effect was immense. No more volume from the bass but so much more clean low end. Stepping forward four feet defeated the effect. I got both the guitarist and the drummer to experience the effect with similar huge grin results. Simply dialling in more low end on the amp just made the cab sound boomy and wooly not like the sound in the corner. This just demonstrates to me the complex nature of bass frequencies. Even with a cab with excellent off-axis response, there's always going to be someone in your audience either sat in a bass trap (they'll be the one telling you your bass is too loud at half time) or in an area where out-of-phase reflections cancel out your cabs output causing a bass void. The only way forward is for the audience to all wear headphones .
It's the same idea as the one used by HiFi speaker designers - placing the speaker cabinet close to the back wall reinforces the bass notes - most designers of small speakers do it, and often give very precise distances for best results. In a corner you have two walls - multiplies the effect. In fact, the PJB Flightcase bass amp comes with a strong recommendation that you place it on the floor (despite its small size), and if possible close to a rear wall - the user manual actually goes into quite a lot of detail about how it works. Recommended reading (you can download a PDF copy from the PJB website).
 7.
Sold my 85 MK on here for £700 last year, appeared on ebay week later and sold for £1100 just a few small blems. Go figure... Andy
Had a very interesting chat with The Doc about this a little while ago, and he suggested a figure within that range - a bit of added rarity value because it's a lefty. I know it can be hard to predict (especially with these!), but I'm hoping that type of thing will be less likely in the current climate. I think if I seriously suspected somebody trying to do that I'd probably withdraw it - guess I have a slight trading advantage in that I'm not in desperate need of funds (it would be useful to have the money, but other factors don't actually depend on it).
 8. In case anybody's interested I'm putting my MK Signature up as a feeler for possible sale. Here's the link: Jaydee feeler
 9. I could do with raising some funds for a personal project of a bassy nature, so I'm looking at the possibility of putting my '87 Lefty Jaydee up for sale. There's a pretty full set of pics here: Jaydee shots Just a feeler for the mo as I haven't definitely decided to sell it yet - although I don't really use it anymore I'm still not sure I want to be parted from it. (Not a sale tactic - I'm genuinely not sure.) For the record, it's in really superb nick apart from a slight issue with the volume knob - it works, just not quite the way it's supposed to. (Will be sorted by JD before I pass it to anyone else.) The original and somewhat flimsy truss rod was replaced by JD shortly after I got it with a much sturdier item that works flawlessly. Anybody interested? No real idea what to ask for it as Jaydee prices are up & down like Jock's Horse (old saying from my wife's home town in Scotland - don't ask!) If anyone would care to suggest what they'd be willing to pay for it then I'm all ears. I have a notional value in my head BTW but that's as far as it goes. No trades guys (unless it's for a vintage Stingray...)
 10.
By bizarre coincidence I was just last night trying to figure out some of the more twiddly bits in that song !!
Well there you go! 2 answers from 1 question. I have to own up that it's not entirely my own work - sometimes it's possible to find a useable version on a Tab site like Ultimate Guitar and tweak it a little (which is what I did here) Can't guarantee absolute accuracy of the tab for that reason, but at least you get an idea of what you're getting for your money with GP5.
 11.
Is Guitar Pro any use? I've been looking for ages for something to do a bit of lightweight music editing (I'm interested in standard notation and doing chord charts) and everything seems way complicated and super expensive. I don't think GP can handle chord charts and lyrics can it?
It's not bad for around £30 (and a damned sight easier to use than Powertab). Unless, of course, you have around £350 available to buy Sibelius. I use it to prepare basic tabs for my students. It does both chord charts and lyrics. It'll do a job as long as you don't try to get too ambitious with it Yes it's pretty basic compared to Sibelius and does have its limitations, but then it is around a tenth of the price. I've attached an extract from something I worked on recently. It's a .PDF document, but was exported directly from GP5.
 12.
In Guiitar Pro go Tools -> Transpose. You can then lift it or drop it by however many semitones you like. Word of warning though, it'll try to work out the fingering for you (assuming you use both the TAB and the Standard Notation) and it's not always the best!
Yes! Once you've done the transposition you'll most likely need to go through the whole tab and redo (or at least check) all the guitar and bass parts. Be prepared to be confused for a while!
 13.
Bah, I dont think any real bassist plays for the sole purpose of money.
Another thought about this one - try telling this to a busy session player spending most of his working life sat in an orchestra pit or recording studio, and see what sort of response you get...
 14.
Curiosity touching base here. What do you define as a real Bassist ? Garry
Kind of wondering about that myself. Speaking personally, I'm a real bassist with a mortgage and bills to pay. Like a lot of other people around here I suspect....
 15. Excuse me for butting into an ongoing argument - I mean debate - but aren't basses made to be played? I love posing with my gear as much as the next person, and I do understand the appeal of holding a dropdead gorgeous instrument that draws gasps from onlookers... but who else is gonna see it when you're in an orchestra pit, for example, or a recording studio? Not much point in a bass that looks like a million dollars and sounds like plywood and rubber bands. Happy to be wrong though - wouldn't be the first time!
 16.
Yes mate, something like this http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_double_bag_trolley_ebass.htm
Aha! Now there's a good idea! Again, I do appreciate it. Thanks for the excellent advice. Andy
 17.
I don't think thats exactly correct, I think in fact the sale price gets added into your capital pool as a positive amount eg if your pool was 4k and you sold equipment for 1k your pool is now 3k. Last (tax) year I sold a bass for a profit as I'd owned it for 20yrs and I was advised by the (very helpful) people on the HMRC helpline that this was the correct course of action.
Fair point - I'm no tax expert and am happy to bow to your superior knowledge. However the basic point of remembering to declare it remains true, otherwise you could be accused of attempting to avoid paying tax that's due. I do agree with you when you hint that HMRC gets a bad press unfairly. Despite the horror stories posted in this thread, tax officials are for the most part not out to get you. Most of them see themselves as there to help you get it right. One of my neighbours works for HMRC and is a thoroughly nice man.
 18.
Seriously, if you do, you'll have alot less explaining to do at customs. Depending on which airline you go with you should be ok - invest in one of them double cases. How many basses are you brining back?
Two. Double cases?
 19. Just a further point about buying & selling gear. As has been said already, if you buy gear to use within your business you can claim it as a capital expense over a period of years. Couple of things about selling gear that you need to pay attention to (and lots of self employed people are kind of lazy about this); when you sell it the proceeds from the sale get added to your yearly income as a single amount - whether or not you made a profit on the subsequent sale is irrelevant for tax purposes. If you don't declare the sale you could be in trouble later. Also, don't forget to remove it from your capital expenses claim - not usually a big deal unless it was very expensive to start with, but if you're claiming tax relief for something you no longer possess a vindictive tax person could get nasty. (Technically I believe it's fraud, but happy to be corrected if someone knows better. IR types don't like the idea that you're conning them out of money...) BTW, I'm definitely not an HMRC mole - that's one.....
 20.
I bought 4 sets of Status light ( 30 - 90 ) off eBay for a good price to try them. Finally stuck the first set on me Wal yesterday and they are bloody hopeless! Can barely see them never mind find them to play so off they came for Black Label Warwicks 45s! Now have 3 sets of single end Status lights gathering dust. BB
When Pete Stevens serviced my Wal he put Roto 45's on it. Seemed a bit odd at the time, putting such everyday strings on something like that - didn't half sound good though!
 21.
Go over with some empty cases!
Thanks. Appreciate it.
 22.
i'd reccommend that if you have some spare cash lying around (LOL) then go and buy different makes/guages, etc. until you find something better than your regulars... but always have a spare set of your normal ones just in case!
Thanks for that - will probably do so over the next couple of months to see if there's anything I prefer, but will go back to the Elites in the meantime. Had quite an interesting PM from the SEI's previous owner that shed some useful light on the subject. Best thing I can come up with is a combination of wrong material and wrong weight. (Thomastics are of course lighter gauge-for-gauge than other makes.)
 23. Greetings from another Jaydee owner - Lefty I'm afraid, but hey! Pics here if you'd like a look. That's a mighty fine collection of basses you have there.
 24.
well done you, what the hell is transposition though?
It's when you play a piece in a different key from the one it was originally written in. e.g. 'Sweet Child o' Mine' was originally written in D. I once played in a band where the lead singer (singers! Pah!) couldn't reach the highest notes so we played it in A. Transposition from D to A (Yes, I know it was actually D flat but the same rule applies.) Most cover bands do it at some point, often without realising it.
 25.
MAybe save some cash on the pre-amp, then?
Too late I'm afraid - paid for and probably already at Stanstead by now! Cost over £100 so it'd bleedin' well better work!
