1.
TI are nickel...perhaps your SEI needs stainless for my 2p they are the best flat on a 4 i have ever used including the old elites from 1990's with the black tapes
Whatever the cause the SEI doesn't like 'em. As I said before though, they've transformed the Jazz - didn't think a simple change of string could have such a dramatic effect.
2.
I am a convert to TIs I like the sound and tension, but I have found I sort of prefer them on an active bass, and I do think it depends on the bass. I dont like rounds on my Jerry Scheff, but I have rounds on a stirling, I have several precisions with rounds, but one with a steve rabe preamp with flats. If you take them of your Sei you can probably keep them till another bass comes along.
I'm on the verge of taking them off TBH. It's a headless so I'm basically stuffed unless & until I can get another one to put them on. Just annoyed at the cost of the strings + cost of setup. Guess I'll just have to put it down to experience. Take your point too Telebass: MIM Jazz is of course passive while SEI is active. Slight worry now is that I'm planning to upgrade the Jazz with an Audere active circuit! Ah well - guess I'll findout in the next week or so. Watch this space...or not.
3. Got a question for the string geeks - I recently changed the strings on my MIM Jazz IV. On the strength of reviews and a bit of local buzz I tried some Thomastik Jazz roundwounds - my god, what a difference! Not just 'new for old' syndrome, but a genuine transformation in the sound. Can't remember the previous set's identity, but don't recall feeling there was much wrong with them at the time. On the strength of this I had Martin Petersen put a set on my SEI Original headless V when I had serviced a couple of weeks ago, in place of the Elite DBE's that it had previously been home to.... Yeughh! I hate them! All the sparkle is gone, and they sound limp & lifeless by comparison. I'm gonna stick with them for a bit cos they were pricey at £45 a set, but unless things improve dramatically they'll go in the bin and back on with some Elites. Any thoughts? Anyone?
4.
I'll PM you Sir, I'm sure it will be amazing.
Called today and said to expect you. Alex said he would put some new strings on it. Martin is on hols (I wish!) and John ill, so don't know if service has been done. Not sure it needs much TBH (clean fretboard, check setup, tighten up Jack socket perhaps...), but still... Enjoy! p.s. am still considering an offer from Josh for a trade with his pre-EB Stingray, so quite possible it may come off their books in the next few days...
5. A common fallacy with slap is that it inevitably contains an unremitting volley of notes. Although the gunslinger brigade tend to like to show off how well their w***ing hand works, it is possible to incorporate elements of slap technique into a less frantic playing style. In the current Muse thread elsewhere on Basschat there's been some discussion of developing a playing style that's individual to you. A lot of people like to talk about playing in a 'slap style' but IMHO the word 'slap' suggests a specific set of technical skills - how you use them is up to you. (The reply above explains slap in some detail, but approaches it from the viewpoint of a technique to master, not a style to play in.) Just trying to be helpful...
6. Got a question if anybody feels able to answer. I've bought a couple of basses from sellers in the US, and there's a chance that I'll be able to go across to pick them up early/mid August. Anything I should know about bringing them into the UK by air? Any helpful hints would be much appreciated.
7.
I'll be playing your bass on Tuesday, looking forward to it and the Clifton EUB. Haven't told the missus yet.
Excellent! Let me know what you think. I'm assuming they've done the service but just realised I haven't actually checked. I'll give Alex a ring tomorrow.
8.
Well I mentioned this before but I'm now seriously considering letting my Shuker 5 headless go so just seeing if any interest here. Comes with original case and I'll be looking for £1000.00. This bass is easily in the same league of craftmanship as SEI etc. Reasonably lightweight and easy to play with good balance. Maple/Wenge Neck-thru. Ziricote fretboard. Similar density to maple. White Ash body. Flamed Myrtlewood facing. 34" scale, 24 fret. Blue side leds with external brightness control. SD Bassline pickups (MM/jazz) with coil switch for MM. Shuker 3 band circuit plus active/passive switch. I find I'm mostly playing my US deluxe 4 now. Maybe age related but I'm starting to get back into the more traditional bass look. I'll be looking for a high end 5 jazz type over the next few weeks, possibly ordering another Shuker if nothing used turns up. Could also be into part ex on other LH basses. Drop me a pm with what you have or any questions on the Shuker.
Now that is tempting (again! - we've been here before I think!). As you may have read in the lefty thread I might have a bite on the Wal, but the guy can't do the deal for a couple of weeks. If it's still for sale when that goes through then (to quote governor Arnie) I'll be back. Will be watching it in the meantime though. Come to think of it I could be there in a little over an hour - you got any time over the next couple of weeks when I could come round and have a closer look? Andy p.s. might you be interested in a trade for my Jaydee? Pics here Jaydee pics
9.
i'd buy it tomorrow but i'd need to sell a bass or two first.only just noticed your bass for sale. Got a natural maple neck 1977 jazz all original, Zon sonus 4 spalted maple top, a 79 ibanez musician and a few more (all lefties of course).none of these would take long to shift especially the jazz.obviously this would be no good if you need the money straight away but if you had a couple of weeks i could even put a deposit down.let me know mate as i already know a couple of guys that would snap up the Jazz.cheers..Dave
Not in a huge hurry so take your time. If you want to try it out it's at The Bass Gallery in Camden. They have it up at £3000 right now (set to come down anyway pretty soon) but because it's a commision sale I'm still free to sell it myself. Get back to me. When you have a definite offer to make it would normally be done via PM.
10. Price drop on my '84 Wal Custom. Anybody offer me £2250?
11. Bump from a fellow Wal owner. At this price I cannot believe nobody's bitten your arm off! There seem to be a few Wals around the major forums right now, some of them at unbelievable prices (like this one for instance!), but nothing's moving. How low do we need to go!!! Best of luck mate . I'm rooting for ya.
12.
A lot of kids want to be bass players because of his work. Isn't that a good thing too? QUOTE>>>>> In my opinion...yes thats great!! as long as they dont emulate him in a way that may take away from there style that could be there own...I have learned many a lick from amazing players along the way, but its important to keep your own thang.. i appreciate players who cover great bass players tunes, but for god's sake dont ask me...."how can i get the tone of"....your YOU, good or bad..important thing is your original..
Couldn't agree more. I would hope that all young players will eventually want to develop their own style, but everybody's gotta start somewhere. I also think that an important part of developing your own style involves taking the things you first learned to play and exploring areas the player(s) you pinched them from didn't go to. I did, and I'm willing to bet that most if not all the people reading this thread did as well.
13.
Hi, i'm just testing the water for selling this : I have no real idea of the asking price for the moment Someone could be interested? Tkx
Oh yes! Definitely interested. Could you tell us a bit more about it please? History, materials, etc. Some idea of what you want for it, whether you'll do trades, etc. Noticed your Regenerate signature btw. Are you an agent, endorsee or just a user? I ask because I'm in the process of buying that gorgeous Honey burst Jazz that Rod has on his homepage. I think they are fabulous instruments but keen to know what someone else thinks.
14. Whether you like his playing or not, it's as much a part of the band's sound as Bellamy's guitar. Isn't that a good thing? A lot of kids want to be bass players because of his work. Isn't that a good thing too? Kids don't take up bass because old farts like me tell them to; it's because they've heard someone like Wolstenholme and think, 'I want to learn to play like that'.
15. Been speaking about this to the guy who makes Regenerate GuitarWorks instruments. Now here's a man who REALLY knows what to do! Check this out: Coating fretboards
16. Hey guys, (slightly OT in this thread but...) interesting lefty debate over at Talkbass (not the usual slanging match but a real debate! ):- Here...
17. Anybody else seen This When the link comes up, go to the bottom of the page...
18.
NO lefty Dingwalls AFAIK. Because everything is really Custom made, it requires everything to be drawn, designed and manufactured from scratch and that would not cover the expenses involved for a left handed Dingwall
Was kind of worried about that. Shame. Fabulous craftsmanship.
19. Doing exactly the same thing as you on my MIM Jazz. General consensus I've had from various people who know about such stuff is to get the Gotoh. Almost as good as the BAII for a lot less money. Also, BA used to be a bit fiddly to fit as you had to cut the string slots into the saddles - apparently you can now get them pre-cut though. Might be a good idea to check if you plan to go that way. Have you thought about going active? Audere seems to be a popular choice but there's lots to choose from, and you'll no doubt get other choices suggested here. Decided not to change my pups until I've done the other stuff - gives me a chance to see what effect each change has.
20. Wow! What a beautiful piece. Had a quick glance at the Dingwall website and couldn't find any reference to Lefties - anybody know better?
21. Periodical bumpety, just so's you know it's still here.....
22.
Hey guys. As some of you have already noticed, I'm thinking of putting my 1984 Wal Custom 4-string lefty up for sale. I have a thread running in the 'basses for sale' forum. Put lots of detail into that posting so if nobody minds I'd rather not repeat myself here. Apologies if this confuses anybody. No photos ready at the time of writing, but should appear over the next day or two. I'll put them into the other thread and most likely dup them here. I'm happy for this to take as long as it takes (within reason) - I'm not doing it to generate funds. Willing to explore options and happy to consider trades for something of broadly similar quality.
Occasional bump, just so folk know it's still around...
