Does my pub band really need 4 PA speakers?
leftybassman392 replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
That could be your problem right there; it would certainly explain the current setup. I can't help thinking that a mixer with more auxes and a decent set of IEMs instead of the duplicate PA for the drummer would serve everybody's needs rather than just his. -

@EBS_freak Side fills would be the way I would go if necessary, but in a pub/function setting I can see no justification for the stated setup at all. The query about domestic surround sound was actually a serious one. The layout looks suspiciously familiar (apart from the stage front speakers facing the 'wrong' way of course), don't you think? -

I ran PA systems in several bands over a period of around 12 years, which I also hired out (with myself as engineer) to various organisations from time to time. I've never heard of this type of configuration; using upstage speakers for FOH reinforcement makes no sense to me at all (not to mention the problem of onstage noise levels that others have already referred to). Does the 'PA' guy use a surround sound system at home? Just a thought... -
PJB Suitcase would be my choice too. Expensive though, and some view the sound as being a bit of an acquired taste.

Available to a good home. Although it's a few years old, it's in extremely good nick and everything worked last time I used it. It used to have some bits & bobs with it for printing CDs and so on. Not sure where it all is but I'll have a bit of a hunt around (can't guarantee I'll find anything though). I think I have some spare ink cartridges too, and any that I find will come with it. AFAIK they're still pretty widely available anyway. My only reason for moving it on is that it's not supported in Win10 (everything but as it turns out... ). Can't speak for other OSs, but if it's an issue I'm sure it'll be pretty simple to check. It'll have to be pickup/ collection at an agreed location I'm afraid as we're rather busy with my sister's funeral arrangements and administering her estate right now so I have neither the time or the inclination to pack it and courier it. The box it came in is long since gone anyway. I live in the Solihull area (not too far from the main A34 Stratford Road) but am willing to travel a bit to deliver for a bottle of cheap plonk or a few quid to put in my back pocket. Any info please ask, but bear in mind that I'm a bit busy at the time of writing so can't guarantee a quick response.

I once played in a pub covers band whose second guitarist used to turn up to every gig with a different guitar. Most of them were Gibsons of one sort or another and he couldn't really play any of them, but the one time he produced a Flying V I seem to recall he spent most of the night playing several frets too high due to the unusual offset neck position. Had we been a jazz band we might have got away with it... Oh, and Bigsbys on Vees are an abominable notion.

Punctuation is pretty is pretty poor as well: too many commas and not enough (or indeed any) brackets, speech marks in place of apostrophes, and so on. Unless of course it's deliberate... Either way, it's difficult to see who he's aiming the ad at. If indeed it is an ad...

... and of course the bodies on early Firebirds weren't much more than a rounded-off variation on this basic shape: https://screenshots.firefox.com/IrNudbQizV1JVyG7/duckduckgo.com ETA: Apologies for the slightly iffy link. I'm in a bit of a rush so...

Indeed; a solution to a problem that should never have existed. I do think that as an overall package the Explorer is the most resolved shape of the family though. YMMV of course.

I like it too, awkward headstock notwithstanding.

Further price drop. Now at £675, with a reminder that it has had a full service and a new set of valves. In all honesty I can't see it going any lower than this - it's already well into 'special deal for a fellow basschatter' territory. I'll leave it on here for a while but if it doesn't shift fairly soon I'll hand it over to someone to sell as a commission sale. Not intended as a threat, but I'm not using it and need to move it on.

Elixir strings are coated with Gore-tex. Is that what you mean?

If you sell a bass in this way then presumably you have: 1. Decided that it's a desirable thing to do (presumably because you feel it improves your chances of selling your bass in some way); 2. Decided to take advantage of the reputation and/or facilities your chosen agency offers; 3. Decided to accept their terms and conditions of sale; and, 4. Decided that the net price you will get from the sale is at least as much as you would get from selling it yourself (and without the inconvenience of having to advertise it, field dumb queries from the great unwashed or arrange delivery/courier/collection yourself). If you're unhappy with any of the above, then without wishing to be rude why are you doing it this way in the first place? Why not just sell it yourself and be done with it?

I don't normally get that type of problem at my local emporium. Late last year I bought an acoustic guitar and an amp from PMT Birmingham, and the whole sequence was really quite pleasant. IMHO going in with a professional, businesslike attitude and making it clear that you're there to buy if the right item is available helps. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and went out of their way to discuss options, set gear up for me and - most importantly - leave me to it when the time came. The fact that I've known the store manager for the thick end of 30 years may have helped of course, but thinking about it they were good from the moment they fielded my initial phone enquiry not knowing me from Adam.

I had a Dual Reverb 50w combo as my main gigging amp for years doing pub and club gigs. Nice gear for sure, but I could never get it loud enough to really make the power valves work properly without annoying my bandmates and offending the management at most venues. Worth trying out though I'd have thought.

Looks like a good deal at that price. Has to be worth a try I'd have thought. I remember the old LC15 with great affection though so I could be biased...

This would be my take on it. -
Haven't seen those before. Nice. (Don't forget to budget for a cab though).

Another +1 for The Gallery. I have a headless Original Lefty 5 as my one and only remaining bass. Fabulous instrument that I will never part with. They also did a job selling my '84 Wal (which proved to be more of a mission than I was expecting). Great place to visit. If you're in London with some time on your hands you could do a lot worse than take a walk up the Camden Road and spend some time there. Good to see that they now have a presence here. All the best guys. -
I think you may struggle to get anything decent new but the pre-owned market in this kind of kit is pretty lively. In all honesty you won't get anything with valves in it, but if that's not important there's plenty of perfectly useable practice amps from the likes of Blackstar, Peavey and Marshall out there that will be well within your budget. Also, if volume isn't an issue you could even get a little micro amp and have a bit left over for a pedal of some sort. Just a few thoughts.

What is your budget?

Jimi Hendrix played or wrote many of the bass lines for JHE. Anybody mentioned Jack Casady yet?

I've owned or played a range of acoustics from the likes of Gibson, Martin and Taylor over the years. I recently bought a Faith (made in Indonesia under the eye of Patrick James Eggle). Truth to tell it's as well made as any of them at around a third of what I might pay for a Gibson equivalent and around a quarter the price of a Taylor. I hadn't heard about the iffy build quality of recent Gibsons but if that's the case then it's hardly any wonder they're struggling against that sort of competition.
