  1. Maybe the article in the following link will help clarify some of the issues raised in this thread. It's concerned with sustain (natural sustain that is, not the kind you get from a Marshall stack cranked to 11) on guitar strings, but a plucked string is a plucked string so with a few minor caveats the same basic rules apply. Sustain I'll keep digging around in the meantime. ETA: Here's another piece, this time studying the effect of different string gauges on sustain and more by way of a discussion. Not really that scientific IMHO, but on the upside it is from Talkbass so it's ok to read it. Talkbass discussion Finally (for now at least) here's a very interesting (IMHO of course) article on the subject of resonance, energy and sustain (this time from a real bass player - who, er, also happens to be a scientist of some sort). My favourite quote is in the paragraph headed 'What we've learned.' Caution: contents may cause offence to owners of stupidly expensive basses with exotic tonewoods. Resonance
  2. You know... instruments/equipment/techniques/vids/... Any prospect?
  3. How aboiut a little blue flame inside the circle; a bit like the British Gas one (but not the same, obviously )? ETA: Ooops! crossed posts. Still think it's a good idea in blue though...
  4. Nope. The only energy in the string is what you (the player) put into it. It may be that certain bridge designs reduce the rate at which the energy dissipates (which you'd hear as enhanced sustain), but they can't add to it. It may also be that certain bridge designs bring out the higher order harmonics a bit better, but the two are not necessarily related I don't think. In case it isn't already blindingly obvious, the dynamics of plucked strings is quite a complex topic...
  5. As has been said by Silverfoxnik and others, it's seen as a measure of construction quality.
  6. Anybody play in a Pink Floyd tribute band?
  7. It's what plucked strings do. Simple physics. In fact, strings that play very low frequencies are generally speaking thicker than strings that play higher frequencies, which means they have more mass, which means they have to dissipate more energy, which means - on a well-made instrument at least - they keep vibrating for longer. Which means more sustain. Edit To Add: Furthermore, the thicker the string for any given frequency the greater the sustain. When discussing string gauges, we don't talk about thickness; we talk about weight. Surely better to have it and decide for yourself when (or whether) you want to use it.
  8. Not to be overly picky, but the lawyers accept or reject offers on behalf of their client, surely? A minor technical detail to be sure, but all the same...
  9. Worth mentioning that Del Ray claims to have offered Radiohead 40% - the same figure that Radiohead themselves agreed to give Hammond & Hazelwood (the actual writers of 'Air That I Breathe'), as well as acknowledging their influence on the songwriting credit for 'Creep' - but that Radiohead's lawyers refused the offer.
  10. I'm now waiting for lawyers for the Hollies pop up and sue everybody in sight...
  11. Radiohead are apparently suing Lana Del Ray over the copyright to 'Creep'. The claim is that her song 'Get Free' is a ripoff: Compare for yourself I know chord sequences are not supposed to be subject to copyright, but the one song does sound an awful lot like the other to my ears. What do you think guys?
  12. Update: the amp is now back at my house (complete with documentation confirming the revalve and service at PMT Birmingham), and I can confirm it is indeed in spotless condition.
  13. Hey hey hey! That looks familiar. Lovely instrument. If I were in the market I'd buy it back without pause for breath. Good luck with the sale.
  14. Bit late perhaps, but I recently had my Cornford guitar amp in for a complete revalve (5x12AX7 + 2xEL84) and service. £130 all in.
  15. Up for sale is my old Japanese-made Ibanez RG470L. Owned by me since new circa 2000 (give or take a bit...). One of my main gigging and teaching guitars for a number of years so has seen a bit of life: there's a few minor nicks here & there but nothing major. I'm pretty sure the tone knob has stopped working (not an uncommon thing for this model I believe) - not that it did much even when it was working! That said it's still got it where it counts, and everything that needs to work properly does - action is as good as the day I bought it. It will be thoroughly cleaned and fitted with a new set of Ernie Ball Super Slinkys prior to sale. Colour is Black, and it comes with a Ritter gigbag. Pretty sure I have all the bits somewhere and will dig them out to include in the package. I'll put up a picture later in the day, but in the meantime here's a link to a stock photo of the model: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Ibanez/RG470L-Electric-Guitar.gc I live in the Solihull/Birmingham area, and do not want to post it. Collection/delivery at an agreed location is much the preferred choice, and will be the only choice for the time being. Thanks for looking. My feedback
  16. Basses. Bass amps. Bass equipment. I'm basically in the 'never say never' camp, but given my age and current circumstances I can't foresee a situation in which my current setup of 1 bass, 1 amp, 1 cab and a couple of pedals will prove insufficient for my needs.
  17. Excuse me? Are you doing this deliberately? Whatever, it's academic now anyway. I will continue to post For Sale ads the same way as I've been doing these past 8 years or so. I live in Solihull by the way, in case anybody needs to know... Aaand I'm out.
  18. Certainly is. Now if you can point me to the post where I claimed you had in fact demanded it perhaps we can move forward.
  19. It's your opinion that the site should demand location information. Or have I missed something?
  20. Well I've had a week of dealing with a fairly shitty little virus, while at the same time having to drive 200 miles down to Kent and back to see my sister who has had a major fall at home and has spent the entire period in hospital (with at least as much again to come - on top of a lifelong history of spending far too much time in hospitals of one sort or another), not to mention some medical issues with Mrs. LBM over the same period. So no Pete, I'm not really full of the joys of Christmas right now. That's not the point though. Anybody with half a brain cell would know that telling people where you are is a good idea. Compelling them to do so is overkill IMHO, and while I'm on the subject I still haven't read a convincing justification for having this compunction included. Maybe I've missed something though, which I'm sure some helpful BC member will point me to.
  21. Granted it's a good idea if a seller is serious about selling stuff, but a requirement? I'm really not trying to obtuse about this (and in one respect it is a picky little technical point), but to require someone to say where they live on pain of not being allowed to advertise...? Really? It's a marketplace FFS; people buy stuff they often don't need with money they often don't have to spare.
