1. Don't worry mate; they're not going anywhere just yet.
 2. We've been in rentals for a few years now having sold our own house and invested the proceeds. It's a forced move as the landlord has sold the property, but on the upside the house we're moving to is newer, bigger and better than the one we're moving from. We will miss the area though: Redditch gets a bit of a bad press, but our end of it is very pleasant: quiet, secluded and a couple of minutes' walk from open countryside. Great neighbours too. Ah well, c'est la vie.
 3.
If you don't find anyone interested please don't chuck them or use them for some hipster makeover project will you? Get back in touch with me and I'll store some of them for you with a view to sourcing/building a 78RPM deck. You may also want to consider it; https://www.henleyde...Ject-78RPM-c643 I'd be very surprised if no-one wants to give you money for them however.
Thanks for that. We'll be moving in 3 weeks, so I won't have time to do anything with them before then anyway. Once we're in the new house I'll need to set aside some time to catalogue them and assess the situation from there.
 4.
Suppose the best guitarist also has a huge ego and is difficult to work with. These types can hold back band progress.. The adequate guitarist with a great positive attitude and understands how to work with people and be in a band is the better choice. IMO Blue
Well it's a rhythm guitarist's job we're talking about, so ego is less likely to be so much of an issue. If it was a lead guitarist I would agree (up to a point - ego can just as easily be an issue for anyone - including the bass player). I stand by what I said earlier (albeit with only 20 years of experience). A professional ensemble (that is to say, an ensemble of professionally trained musicians) would routinely look at the best player first; ego issues would be some way down the list.
 5.
After 50 years of doing this, I always say go with the best person. The best guitar player could be the worse person for the band Blue
The best person meaning...?
 6. My instinct would be to hire the best guitarist and then worry about BVs (if I can learn how to do it anybody can ). Too late to worry about it this time around of course, but even so...
 7.
The trouble with the purely mathematical approach above, is that, unless you build all of the factors into the equations, it misses out all of the other factors relating to string tension and harmonics and soundboard resonance and harmonics within the soundboard etc, etc, etc.
Quite so: broadly speaking I agree with what you've said. However I left that kind of stuff out so as not to overcomplicate the situation.
IME, giving hard sums to the average BC member can be a bit of a risky business; people have a tendency to either switch off or take the piss (no offence intended to the BC collective, either collectively or individually; just a personal observation drawn from personal experience)
Thing is, we're talking about an idealised - some would even say contrived - situation here. In everyday music making nobody in their right mind compares pitches in this way: you just tune up and play. The precise pitching of the notes and the various characteristics of the instruments are neither here nor there as long as everybody sounds in tune. In an idealised situation, however, the Mathematics is entirely appropriate. On a personal note I would respectfully suggest that the preference for 432 over 440 probably has as much to do with mystical 'insight' as it does with musical nuance. Still, if it floats yer boat then knock yerself out.
 8. You'll be able to take them to the bank for years. Or does nobody use banks anymore? You know... big buildings... 'BANK' written on the outside... most high streets have them? Ring any bells?
 9.
I'm sorry. I am not usually stuck for words but I find it hard to describe the notion. Think of it this way: Had the OP's clip got the same chap playing but instead of him doing it in two different tunings he just slowed the clip enough to get 332 from a 440 clip I would have little difficulty in accepting that the harmonic relationships are preserved as they are with key changes. If however the chappie plays exactly at the same tempo with different pitches, there isn't the same relationship. Can't happen in fact. I can accept that we humans can not perceive the difference but that is not to say that it does not exist. That's just how it strikes me. Maybe someone else can put it better than I.
First off, I assume you mean 432 rather than 332. Tiny pedantic point. Secondly, in fact there is the same relationship - precisely the same in ratio terms: that's just how scales work. Sorry if that appears pedantic and dull but numbers are numbers, and that's just how they work in this situation. In all honesty I can't think what else you might mean, and I'm really not trying to be confrontational or picky. Perhaps an example: (procedural note: I'll use Just Intonation 'cos the numbers are easier to appreciate for non-mathematicians, but it works in exactly the same way with Equal Temperament) If you play A at 440Hz, and then play a perfect fifth above it you get an E at 660Hz. The ratio E:A is 660:440 = 3:2 = 1.5:1 If you play A at 432Hz, and then play a perfect fifth above it you get an E at 648Hz. The ratio E:A is 648:432 = 3:2 = 1.5:1 Edit to add: In Equal Temperament E comes out as 659.26 and 647.27 respectively, and the ratio comes out as 1.498:1 in both cases
 10.
There's some neat patterns if you start from a "magical frequency" of 3 Hz for a G. The G six octaves above is 192 Hz. A perfect fifth above that is D at 288 Hz and a further perfect fifth is A = 432 Hz.
Not if you use Equal Temperament it isn't!
 11.
Maybe this is more useful https://www.78rpmcom.../valuing-78rpms
That's more like it! Ta muchly.
 12.
Oh, by the way Lefty, check here http://www.vinylreco...lues/#gsc.tab=0
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to deal with the old shellac 78s (unless I've missed something of course). I'll have a bit of a trawl around t'internet.
 13.
Is all that hippy guff about cosmic frequencies & stuff at the beginning of the clip meant to be a joke or is it serious?
I think some people do take it quite seriously. Here's the result of a quick YouTube search:
 14.
I inherited a huge boxful from my grandad after he died - there are some exceptions with rare disks I'm sure but the amount each is usually worth is a couple of quid from what I could see. I guess as it was the only real music medium at the time and and so popular they made bloody millions of them!
Yes I had kind of assumed that, and have no great expectations for them value-wise. It's just that this box is quite heavy and we've carted it from place to place every time we've moved; TBH it's getting to be a bit of a ballache (the more so for having to be so careful with them every time).
 15.
@ Leftybassman ; Ambient is not necessarily bound to equal temperament ; he plays solo 7-string fretless .
Fair point, but whatever type of scale it is using the same basic rules apply since scale systems are defined in terms of note-note ratios. Also, I would respectfully suggest that a fretless bass would be more likely to mask such small frequency differentials than accentuate them. As I said though, if people like it then who am I to gainsay?
 16.
It's only sort of a standard anyway.. https://en.m.wikiped...i/Concert_pitch Apparently we need to tune to an oboe
Ummm... you do know that I linked to that article already...?
 17.
If however the tempo for each example remains constant it would follow that note durations would also be constant. If the only variable is the note frequency, would that not have an effect perceptible or otherwise on an unchanged frame imposed by tempo?
(My emphasis) I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the highlighted remark.
 18.
I've done quite a lot of recording of my ambient stuff tuned to A at 432hz. The last time I posted on here about it a lot of the usual know-it-alls piped up, as is their right I guess, I do think there's something about how the notes behave together that isn't there in standard tuning. I do use a lot of sustained tones using an Ebow.
Not wishing to sound like a know-it-all, but in terms of harmonic relationships there's no difference between them. I'm not looking to stand in judgement, but because of the way equal temperament tuning works it makes no difference at all where you put the reference point; every other note that is created from it will will be related to it according to the following algorithm: F[sub]t[/sub] = F[sub]r[/sub](2[sup]n/12[/sup]) where F[sub]r[/sub] is the reference frequency, F[sub]t[/sub] is the target frequency and n is the number of semitones between the two (Note: for notes below the reference frequency n is negative) In simple terms it's a ratio. Since the ratio is fixed for any given note, changing the reference frequency will have no effect on it. The frequencies of the notes change, but the mathematical relationship between them doesn't. This subject has cropped on BC a few times before. Unfortunately for its proponents, the Mathematics is still the same as it has been for around 300 years. Nothing wrong with tuning to 432Hz of course - knock yourself out - but the standard (though not universal) reference has for some time been 440Hz. In audio terms the difference in pitch is barely perceptible (Ab has a pitch of around 415Hz); how much of a difference this would make to the listening experience is debatable at best. 19. Boxed & unused. As per my other items in this forum, no p&p; collection/meet only for a bit of petrol money. Pic & specs: https://www.manualsl...g1202-T10a.html FOR INFORMATION ONLY: Due to the events leading up to our house move this item needs to be claimed by Friday 12th May at the very latest. This is to give me time to donate items to a local charity and/or the nearest recycling centre in good time if it comes to it.
 20. We have a box of them that we inherited when Mrs. LBMs father passed away around 10 years ago. We have no use for them, but I don't want to do anything until I can get some sort of idea: 1. Who might want them; 2. What, if anything, they might be worth. Without looking through them in detail, they are mostly big band jazz records: more than that I can't be sure as it's an era I don't know much about (a random pick of a couple of them revealed works featuring Victor Sylvester and Sid Phillips if that helps - although I did also find a copy of Kenneth McKellar singing 'Scotland the Brave' ). There are around 60 or 70 of them in all. Any help in finding them a good home would be much appreciated.
