Digital compression to reduce file size is nothing to do with dynamic compression ... Digital formats have the potential for at least as much dynamic range as vinyl
This is a very good point. Digital compression works by lopping the extra digital bits off; as Tom said, the primary function is to keep file sizes down (the argument being that you can't really hear the extra detail anyway so you don't lose anything in audio terms - last I knew this was still a fairly hot issue within the industry). It is completely different to audio compression (in which, theoretically at least, all the original audio detail is still there, but has it's dynamic range squashed so that - to put it fairly crudely - the quiet stuff is a bit louder and the loud stuff is a bit quieter). I can't comment on the current situation as I've been away from it for a few years now, but when last I looked it was still possible to ruin a perfectly good sound during the production sequence whatever the format. Also when I last looked digital technologies were capable of substantially better audio resolution than vinyl. I rather suspect that the current move back to vinyl has more to do with the 'character' of the reproduction than the technical quality (something that old-fart audiophiles have been banging on about for decades of course... ). Although not quite the same thing, it's related to the preference most guitarists still have for amps powered by valves (which for the record have been with us for around 70 years). -
Why not give it a go here? In the 'For Sale' forum there's a section entitled 'Other musically related items for sale' or some such.

This guy seems to have quite a lot of stuff on youTube. Not my personal cuppa, but he does seems to be pretty good at it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYjuj3ggaKA Anybody?

This bass has been sold by The Gallery Up for sale is my RGW Heritage Tribute '55. Bought new from the maker in 2009 and hardly used since (so it's in 'as new' condition). Here's a link to the forum giving details of it's manufacture and sale to me (It's the Blond Lefty with the black pickguard). http://www.leftybass...&t=967&start=60 I took it to the Lefty Bass Bash in Warwick if anybody can remember that far back! I will be giving it to The Bass Gallery to sell in a few days, and in case anybody's wondering, the number you see on the website in $ actually cost me that number of pounds (plus a little bit) by the time I'd paid shipping and import duty. It comes with a high quality padded gigbag. Sale only - no trades - sorry. A little bit of slack is built into the asking price. If you make an offer to TBG they'll contact me; or you could contact me direct before talking to them. As always, any questions please ask before committing your hardearned. Check my feedback - link at the bottom of the sig. Edit to add: Link to The Bass Gallery:- http://www.thebassga...e=Bass%20Guitar

Price drop - now at £225 And another - now £200 Up for sale here, my RG470. I'll put pics up as and when, but in the meantime here's a link to a generic shot: http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/RG470 Mine's black and Lefthanded but it's exactly the same model. Bought new in around 2002 it is a Japanese instrument (not Korean), and was my main gigging guitar for around 3 years. Everything works the way it should (including the tone control which does next to nothing on my particular example!). Condition is generally very good - it was a working guitar so there are a couple of small dings around the edges (these guitars are a bit susceptible to this I'm told...), but nothing of significant proportions. Plays as well as the day I bought it. It's set up with 9's, and if you know about Floyd Rose systems you'll know that any changes of setup really need to be done by somebody who knows what they're doing. I'll put a new set of Ernie Balls on it prior to sale. This is sale only - no trades - sorry. It comes with a pretty robust Ritter gigbag, and I can deliver pretty much anywhere within the Midlands for petrol money - I have time and I like driving. I'd rather not post it though: I don't like posting guitars, and in any case I don't have the stuff I'd need to package it. Any questions, PM me. Check my feedback (link in the sig). Thanks for looking. Later edit to confirm: this instrument is of Japanese manufacture, not Korean.

Apologies: 'Sale Price' should say '£3500' but I can't change it in the editor (not even in full editor mode). Now available to view on the Gallery website: http://www.thebassga...e=Bass%20Guitar I'm putting my '84 Wal Custom 4 up for sale as I no longer use it and cannot see me needing to use it again. I've owned it (on & off) for around 10 years. Facings are Wenge and the fretboard is Ebony. Last time I looked everything was working fine (it was serviced by Martin Petersen at The Bass Gallery a few years ago and hasn't been used much since), but I will get it properly checked over before sale. It will come with a sturdy gig bag (the original HSC was absent when I first bought it from Pete the Fish in High Wycombe). Condition is very good in keeping with it's age. Within the next couple of days I will be taking it to The Gallery so that they can offer it as a commission sale. It should be up on their website shortly thereafter. I'll be doing pretty much everything through them, so this thread is really not much more than a headsup as to it's availability. If you know what it is then you'll know what it's worth (serious offers based on the asking price will be entertained as the objective is to sell it). If in doubt, ask anyway. No trades. Feel free to go try it out at the Gallery once it gets there. Questions, queries or offers - PM me or speak to the Gallery. I can't guarantee to answer immediately but will do my best.

Update: well I did the gig and the amp did sterling service - sounded great, absolutely perfect for the job. Had my little Boss CH3 at the front end for the spacey stuff, but that apart straight into the amp. Nice reverb too, and tone controls that actually do something! I may do this again...
Why does it need a fan? It's only 45W
Beats me! It's quite loud too when the amp's not in use. Took me a minute or two to work out what was making the racket first time I heard it! Not an issue when you're playing though, and it must be said that it does sound very convincing for something so small - plenty of bass output too (as you'd expect I guess ). Makes my old 335 sound like a proper jazz guitar.

what's the worst thing that's happened to you onstage?
leftybassman392 replied to Funky Dunky's topic in General Discussion
This would have to be the night we played one of the rougher pubs in Northampton (Kings Heath - can't remember the name of the pub but if you lived there in the mid-late '90s you'll know it). At different points in the evening we were:-

offered stolen silver service cutlery by an off-duty bouncer the size & shape of a brick shithouse;
treated to a Full Monty striptease by another dubious and slightly wobbly character (in front of a virtually all-male crowd) as we played 'Can't Get Enough Of Your Love';
and witnessed the pub landlord being physically upturned by a couple more gentlemen of ample proportion and shaken until his money dropped out of his pockets and fell jangling to the floor.
On the bright side we escaped pretty much unscathed, and the van still had all it's wheels when we packed up after the gig! -
Nice...have a look at Mambo amps, a UK made amp of similar design. I got one last year and its done almost every gig since (BG and Double bass) but its primarily a jazz guitar amp..much like the old Polytone is its concept . I had the same problem with a cover, but I plastered the delivery box in gaffer tape (cut off the bottom and made a slot for the handle) and ten months later its still going strong!
I used to have a Polytone Mini Brute IV with a big old 15" Eminence speaker for exactly this purpose, but sold it as it was too heavy to lug around after my back problem. It was very good at what it did though, and even doubled as a bass amp once or twice.

Query: Sourcing a soft cover for Markbass Micromark
leftybassman392 replied to leftybassman392's topic in Amps and Cabs
Roqsolid are very, very expensive for what they are. I find Hot Covers not only cheaper but far superior quality
Thanks for that. I'll certainly give it a look. On the upside the amp is so small that it was never going to be properly expensive anyway. The other option would have been to get a flightcase made (despite it's size it is a £450 amp for use in a professional application so not as daft as it might seem), which I think would have been. -
Query: Sourcing a soft cover for Markbass Micromark
leftybassman392 replied to leftybassman392's topic in Amps and Cabs
Excellent! Ta muchly. Edit: Whaddya know - they have one on the shelf already! -
Hey guys. I've just bought one of these: http://www.fouldsmusic.co.uk/jazz-guitars-and-accessories/jazz-amplification/dv-mark-little-jazz.html Made by the same people who make the Markbass Micromark bass amp - kind of shows in the design don't you think? Great tone and plenty of volume from my old 335 - although I also had a chance to play this particular item: http://www.fouldsmusic.co.uk/jazz-guitars-and-accessories/jazz-guitars/peerless-martin-taylor-maestro-left-hand.html Now I'm not really a proper Jazz player although I can bluff well enough for most punters' satisfaction it seems, but I left the shop wanting this guitar very much! It really was that good. Anyhoo, first impressions of the amp are very favourable. Simple, no frills approach with the focus firmly on tone - oh, and portability . I'll be gigging it in a few weeks and will report back for the benefit of anybody still reading this. While I'm here, anybody have a clue where I can source a third-party padded soft cover for it? It's fractionally bigger than a Micromark so anything made for that will likely be a wee bit small. DV Mark have thus far not seen fit to produce one (although to be fair it *is* a very new design). All sensible offers will be taken seriously.
-
Slightly odd one, this. I haven't actually bought a MicroMark but a DV Mark Little Jazz amp. Here's a link: http://www.fouldsmus...ittle-jazz.html I need to try and source a soft padded cover for it as I plan to gig with it if the chance arises. The reason I'm asking here is that it's made by the same company as the Micromark and I'm pretty sure it's the same size & shape; only they don't seem to do a soft cover for it (and I'd rather not go to the expense of having a flightcase made). Anybody? Edit: I think it's fractionally bigger but the query still applies I think.

Don't you just hate really talented kids?

I don't hate them really. It's just good to stumble on stuff like this occasionally when you're not expecting it.
