1. Up for sale here is my MIJ white Jazz bass. Not sure of the exact vintage but it's previous owner was pretty sure it was mid '90s. One or two parts have been replaced: The pups are Fender Custom Shop '60s. (Original pups are in the case); The tortoiseshell scratchplate is non-standard I think; The neck plate seems to be an American replacement. Condition overall is very good. (In keeping with it's age there are one or two minor marks, but nothing of any real note.) Action is superb - well up to Fender Japan's usual standards. Sounds fabulous in the usual Jazz Bass tradition. I'm terrible at describing sounds: suffice it to say it sounds exactly like you'd expect it to! It comes with the excellent HSC you see in the pictures. All things being equal I wouldn't be selling it, but I'm raising funds for a new project so it has to go. At this price I think it represent a bit of a bargain, so at this point it's fairly firm. (PM me if you think it's too much though and we'll talk.) Sale only, no trades. Collection/personal delivery for petrol money are the only options - I don't have the time or inclination to put it in the post - sorry! (Having said that I can deliver to a fairly wide radius around Birmingham.) Feel free to ask questions. Check my feedback. http://
2. Up for sale here is my former teaching instrument. Bought new in around 2007-8. Cost then was a tad under £400, now available at GAK for £434 (R/H). There is a very small chip to the varnish on the back of the neck near the heel and a couple of minor marks on the body. That aside it's in excellent condition. I don't teach any more, and so it's been sitting idle for some time. I checked it over before posting and everything works the way it should. Preamp battery seems fine but if there are any issues between now & sale completion I'll swap it out. Comes c/w Roksak padded gig bag. Listed price has a little bit of negotiation built-in. Sale only (no trades). Happy to answer questions. Check my feedback.
3. I found this while looking for something else, and just had to share it. Hope you like it as much as I did! (Watch out for the mid-song detuning in the last song btw ) Enjoy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB8UTheTR7s
4. Many years ago my then best mate and his new girlfriend told us that they were into group sex. Does this count? While I'm here, some needless pedantry follows (not aimed at anyone in particular, but it's been getting on my nerves a bit):
as used in this thread, it's 'into' - one word - rather than 'in to'
5.
Sent a text- polite and non arsey, it so far been ignored. I was tempted to send a pic of my kit all packed up in the back of my car as if to suggest I'd been waiting to hear all night but decided against it.
Well if you don't send it, how will they ever know they've done anything wrong?
6. I'm much too nice to actually say this, but I frequent a forum where there are a lot of people who take pride in 'telling it like it is' (no, not BC! ) and I rather suspect that one or two of those people would be using words like 'precious' and 'pompous' by now. As I said though, I wouldn't say that because I do share your passion. At one time or another I have

owned my own recording studio (albeit a small one) that I used to record my own music, my bands' music, and the music of a range of people from friends to total strangers;
performed in bands playing everything from cocktail jazz to hairy-arsed punk;
taught others to do various combinations of the above, ranging in aptitude from massively skillful and hugely talented to the exact opposite of the aforementioned.
However, it has never occurred to me to criticise people for turning up to one of may gigs and engaging me in musical conversation, even if they clearly don't know a Phrygian scale from a fridge-freezer. If I could offer a bit of old-fart advice, I'd suggest that you might want to lighten up a bit.
7.
It's called pulgar in flamenco, appoyando is the rest stroke on the string above.
Interesting! Never heard it called that before (although I do get the reference). I'm familiar with 'Apoyando' for the rest stroke and 'Tirando' for the free stroke (whatever digit you play it with). Ah well, live and learn.
8.
Isn't that called appoyonado? Read somewhere that sting had been trying it
[NERDALERT] It's called Tirando. It means 'free stroke' - the thumb plucks the string and then comes to rest in the air without hitting another string. The two-fingered picking technique that most bass players use most of the time is called Apoyando or 'rest stroke' - finger plays the string and then comes to rest leaning against the next string. Edit: if the thumb plays the note and then winds up leaning against the next string then that would be Apoyando as well. Hope this helps. [/NERDALERT]
9. Just checked my iPhone, and lo and behold... no U2! On balance I feel pretty good about that - it means that Apple doesn't have access to *everyone* with an iPhone. Or maybe they just don't like me... Either way it's a big
10.
If you want the band to sound good out front, it has to be through the PA. Also as stated above, it allows backline levels to be sensible which helps with onstage sound, particularly for vox and backing vox.
This would be my general approach, although to be fair I haven't done it for a few years now so things might have changed in the meantime (but I doubt it ). I've seen bands come horribly unstuck after refusing the offer to go through the P.A. Subs do help take the strain as well, although it may be a bit moot as to whether you need them in a typical pub.
11. A bit leftfield perhaps, but have you thought about getting a baritone guitar and rethinking your chord patterns to suit? Something like this perhaps... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alvarez-ABT60-Baritone-Acoustic-Guitar-/261422786183?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cde032687
12. One of those rare occasions where it's actually advantageous to be a Lefty!
13. 61 here. If it wasn't for the dodgy back I'd certainly still be doing it! I once played in a function band where I was the oldest by around 15 years (perhaps a little less...) - I let it slip while setting up for a gig one day, and the rest of the guys didn't believe me. I think I was 48 or 49 at the time. I was a lead guitarist in those days; interestingly the next oldest was the bass player, who was in his mid 30's. The drummer was about 21 - I used to teach him Maths when he was at school.
14. A properly set-up sub will give you very subtle bass enhancement (most if not all are self-powered with their own level controls), which will fill out the sound nicely (as well as taking a bit of the strain off the bokshelf units - assuming you have a 5.1 amp). A centre will enhance the vocals, and dialogue from movies as well. Having said all that, I have a very nice set of Rega floorstanders with very deep bass and an excellent stereo image. Just depends what's more important to you really...
15. Not a Flamboyant, but I won't be parted from my headless Original 5 while I have any say in the matter. Acquired from a fellow BC'er 7 or 8 years ago, and the best deal I ever did for a bass - by a distance! I won't put any pics up though as it's a bit OT here...
16.
I hope that I'm not too late onto the bandwagon! I'd love to be able to get down again. It's great to see the event taking place again. It would be an added bonus if the venue was close to a train/tube station in my case, and of course I'd be willing to contribute towards the day.The travel time is roughly the same in order to get to London or Manchester.
... in which case you'll be welcome to both.
17. How odd - I have a fair selection of rare & valuable on my policy, all individually specified with make, model and serial no. IIRC. They appear on the policy document as such. I was given a clear indication when I set the policy up that they were individually covered as specified with the values I gave, with the explicit statement that the valuations were to cover replacement (although how you replace a vintage Wal is a bit hard to imagine...). Then again I have a very long association with the insurer with no claims, so that may have helped. I may check again after reading this but I'm pretty sure they're covered....
18. @Gadge Bit OT I know (and with apologies to the OP), but what do you think of the current Patrick Eggle range? The reason I ask is that I got a look at their stand at last year's Birmingham Guitar Show (I'd got a free pass from Rob Williams - who worked for the company in the early days of course - for lending him the custom Tele he'd built me). I happened on them while wandering around the main floor and was quite surprised to even see them there as the company had long since shut down to the best of my knowledge at the time. No Lefties so there was nothing I could actually play, but they looked rather good to me. Then again, given the price tags they had on them they needed to be! Definitely gone a bit upmarket I'd say...
19. I have a Patrick Eggle guitar from '93. I don't have it to hand right now but IIRC it's stamped on the back of the headstock as a 6-digit number (possibly followed by a 4-digit serial...?. If yours is a similar vintage you might try that... Unfortunately the brand has had a few owners over the years so this may be no help at all.
20. My sympathies go to the OP. Around 4 years ago I had a major (as in Major!) sciatic episode. It has flared up several times since then and these days I live in more or less constant pain to varying degrees. I like to think that I have it under some sort of control (although the recent house move was an interesting experience at times ), and I've been told that if I look after it and get plenty of exercise things shouldn't get any worse; but also will never get better. It put an end to my playing career (which was the primary cause of the problem in the first place - guitar/bass gear + full PA to lug around on a regular basis for many years finally caught up with me and bit me - almost literally - in the arse). My self-confidence also took a major hit, and now I don't think I could ever get properly back into it - although a very good friend has offered me a one-off guitar gig playing dinner Jazz later in the year (I guess I'll see how I feel after that one). I do talk about it with friends & neighbours from time to time though so you never know... @Chiliwailer Hope things turn out for you.
21. Tal Wilkenfeld for me (but with a nod in Suzi Quattro's direction for standing up to be counted at a time when women in rock were still mostly groupies). Cue gratuitous Youtube link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgffDVO2UyA
22. 1. That would have to be the Jaydee '87 Supernatural that I traded with another BC member. Great bass but for some reason I couldn't seem to get on with it so swapped it out for, erm, I can't remember now. I'd like the chance to give it another go sometime but I happen to know the current owner is very pleased with it thankyouverymuch and very unlikely to let it go any time soon. 2. I had the bright idea of buying a cooking bass for students to use, and bought a Vintage P from a musical colleague (though not a bass player, as will become obvious) for £125. Quite possibly the worst bass guitar I've seen in my entire life (and as an ex-tutor I've seen a few ). The last time I lent it out was to a promising young lad of about 15 or 16. Shortly after that I had the back problem that caused my retirement. I didn't even bother to ask for it back - that's how much I missed it!
23.
Oh well, nothing new under the sun, as they say.
Nothing new in The Sun either....
24. @Bilbo. Steve Martin is actually a very handy banjo player in his own right, and could have had a pretty decent career if he so chose (IMHO of course): There's a bit of chat but the music starts at around 3:20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoYW8r_LAFk ...and unless I've missed something we've all forgotten about Jimmy Nail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_519h95XFs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsBcrM8Zqhw
