Sold a few basses via the Gallery. Not for some time now though so it's good to hear commission is still 15%. As a (slight) bonus you do get the benefit of their reputation, which IME allows you to bump the price a little to partially offset the commission.

Erm, because it's a good song, perhaps...? Just a thought... If it bugs you though, feel free to post something different.

@Stingray5, what a lovely piece of music! Thanks for posting. For me, one of the great results in this thread is the sheer breadth of musical talent on display. Horribly clichéd I know, but in that respect it's exceeded my wildest expectations.

I hope folk will forgive me for pressing the point on this, but I just can't seem to get past these guys ATM! Ok, so it's a studio take with extra layering and production (so it wouldn't sound quite the same in live performance), but even so...

Thought I'd revive this thread after an interregnum of a few months. Contributors to this thread may remember that I have (among many other failings!) a weakness for good ensemble singing. A few days ago I found these guys while meandering my way through some Youtube vids. 2 songs from them, but before you listen, you need to bear in mind that, aside from a bit of FX at the start of each song, every sound you hear is made by a human voice (Note: I've posted some of this stuff on another thread, so apologies if you've heard it already) :

I've started getting issues posting emojis from outside sources (I use allsmileys). I have a PC and a Macbook, and the same thing is happening on both of them, which suggests to me that it's likely to be one of the two websites involved. Anybody? ETA: Update; it seems to be the Allsmileys site, so you can all relax and go back to whatever it was you were doing.

I like it too. Great guitar playing; great singing. Must be honest, I don't really get people slagging off music they don't enjoy listening to, often to the point of prejudging it before a note is played. It's a free country (more or less...), but if you don't like it then why not just say so and be on your way? When the thread title starts with the words 'Jazz cover' it's not exactly aerospace engineering to work out what it's likely to sound like, surely?

That's a shame. I was over in the States with friends at the time I picked up the Jazz, and had a very pleasant phone conversation with him. It would be a real shame if he's not making basses any more. I seem to recall that he branched out into guitar making as well. Ho hum.

Indeed it did! Good spot. You doubtless remember it from my time on Leftybassist. Beautifully made by Rod and great to play (although it had to have some - admittedly very minor - post sale work done on the electrics to kill an annoying hum) and I'd say it's pretty good value at that price. Very old school woody tone as I recall. I remember it as having a Nordstrand pup (can't remember which model). If that's what you're after, you could do a lot worse and pay more. Haven't been to Leftybassist for years. Do you happen to know whether Rod is still trading? I sold it as a commission sale through The Bass Gallery in London. No idea who bought it but whoever it was but it was apparently taken pretty much on the spot after a try-out in the shop. Good to see it again @LeftyJ. Thanks for posting.

If you had a Mac I'd suggest Garageband, which has a very good drummer app... I use Audacity for audio editing on a local talking newspaper for the blind. I haven't tried using it for music production though, and would be interested to hear how you get on.

I ordered some recording gear from Thomann at the end of November. Shipped within a day or two, another day or two to get to the UPS warehouse in Tamworth, and then sat there for a week with 'DELAYED' written in big letters on the tracking site. No idea why, but prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt given the circumstances. Then when it is released with a forecast arrival day we make arrangements to be in. Only it arrived a day early, when we were out most of the day getting our new glasses fitted at our optician (140-mile roundtrip - don't ask!). Kindly taken in by a neighbour a couple of doors down. It would be easy to get mad about it but it wasn't time-critical and everything was in the box and undamaged so mostly just took it on the chin. The one caveat was that when it did arrive, the box contained an old-fashioned ignition coil for a vintage car. New stock, still in its box, but WTF it was doing there at all is outwith my comprehension. I think you have to expect some unusual behaviour from couriers ATM, especially with all that's happening and about to happen come January. Not an encouraging message unfortunately, but we are where we are. An exploration of the various reasons why we are where we are is a topic for a different thread (and on a different forum I suspect), but suffice it to say we'd all better get used to it in the coming months for pretty much anything coming from Europe.

Update: I've invested in a matched pair of Rode M5s. I was tempted to go for the more expensive NT5s, but couldn't justify the extra cost given the modest nature of the work. If I was properly serious about it of course, I'd have bought C451s and lived on bread & water for a while. But I'm not. So I didn't. This gives me quite a lot more versatility for a fairly modest extra outlay (around £150 for the mics and the stereo gantry - the NT5s would have been closer to £300 all in ). Right now it's all money going out and nothing to show for it, but in truth I was never going to be starting on this until the new year anyway, so all good at this stage. First thing to do is spend time reaquainting myself with guitars that I mostly haven't played in properly for a year or more (and not gigged for a lot longer than that!). I reckon that'll take me a week or two at least. The technique's still in there somewhere; all I have to do is retrieve it...

I have a vague memory of learning the song (including the solo) at some point in the dim & distant past. Long since gone the way of all things now though. That said, the song is known for being in 7/4. If you do a search of songs in 7/4, it's always one of the first that comes up. While I'm here, a lot of the songs known for being in 7/4 actually alternate between 7/4/ and 4/4 (Solsbury Hill, Paranoid Android, Led Boots - strictly speaking that's 4/4 and 7/8 I think, but you get the idea...).

Indeed. 'Take Five' for example, is played as 3/4 + 2/4. 'Money' (7/4) is played 3/4 + 4/4

Update: while I'm here, odd time signatures are invariably subdivided into 2s, 3s and 4s.
