Lefty is that a bass or a necklace you are wearing?
Well since you ask, the bass is for lefties only - if you're a righty you just can't have one. Even if you wanted it really, really badly. So nya nya nya. The other one's definitely a necklace. Looks dead cool with the BC Polo though.

Mark @ Bass Direct = Top Man = Top Service!
leftybassman392 replied to tonyf's topic in General Discussion
I can only echo what's been said already - I can't remember the last time I spoke to someone so enthusiastic about what he does. Even though he wasn't there in person, his contribution to the success of the recent Lefty Bass Bash was considerable. While I'm here, it would be churlish I think to ignore the other top bass dealer around these parts in the person of Phil Nixon (known to members of this forum as Born 2B Mild), the man behind Bassgear. Phil was kind enough to bring a prototype Overwater Lefty-only bass to the bash, and I for one look forward to seeing the production model. The Lefty bass community is lucky to have guys like these to support the cause. Long may it continue. -
I think you'll all agree that wearing a BC polo increases your musical ability by at least 5%, so it's win-win
Worked for me.

Just to bring us all down to Earth with a bump, I believe Ped you have one or two of me in my (not so) little black number from the Lefty Bass Bash, which you are more than welcome to reproduce here if you still have 'em.

You sure you want to give these away? I suspect somebody would pay good money for them. Have you tried eBay? -

I thought this was going to be a 'life, the universe and everything' kind of thread. What a gip! Still voted though.

I'd definitely be in the market for a nice strap. Pity the lanyards weren't available about a 10 days ago Or perhaps they were and I should have looked, in which case...
Great pics guys. Wish I could have been there. Nice seeing my old Sei getting an outing Andy.
Oh yes! People that played it were all very complimentary. There was some seriously good gear there mind you - I've definitely got my eye on the Roscoe 5 that Dave is playing in the last photo. -
Yup, certainly sounds like there's an issue of some sort. My Streamliner 600/Vanderkley 112 is plenty loud enough to wake the neighbours with the master at 9 o'clock and flat eq - and that's running at 375w.

Genz Benz shuttle 6.0 - Whats the best lightweight cab
leftybassman392 replied to AMPEG's topic in Amps and Cabs
There's no right answer to this despite what people might tell you. I have a Streamliner 600 and for me the best sounding cab is the Vanderkley 112 EXT (33lb.). For somebody else it will be different - Barefaced (e.g. the Midget T - a 112) has many supporters and is extremely light. Aguilar make a very light 112 as well. All three are around £600. The Barefaced has the highest power rating I think but do you really want to buy an expensive cab based on superior power handling alone? The only way you'll really know is to try as many of them (and others) as you can with your amp and bass. Shops that are confident in their product will have no problem with this. Edit: Can't see you getting too much choice of 212's under 30lb so have offered 112's that you can double up on -
And I was suggesting that the money spent on a Brennan would be better spent on a computer which will do all the things that the Brennan can do (and lots more) but with more flexibility and a better user interface.
I'd certainly agree with that. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to sit on my comfy sofa, rest my bad back and listen to a CD.
When all audio-visual and computing devices, phone, internet and what have you are combined into one set-up (convergence) then that will change the dynamic again. I definitely think that not having music on vinyl (or CD) devalues it somewhat. And if you're of a generation who is used to not paying for music anyway, even more so.
It's the nature of the beast I guess. I certainly don't have a problem with it. I think the bottom line for me is that, for what it's designed to do the Brennan device doesn't represent a step forward technologically, and as such would be of questionable value. I think my blood sugar must be a bit low. Can I go for my tea now please?
Your remote might allow you to skip a duff track but with my system it's done automatically so I after the first time there's no user interaction required ever again. My random selection is of my entire collection or any defined subset, not just a single CD. It's all about flexibility. I can listen to a CD as the artist intended or I can hear random selections of all my music - a sort of Radio BRX - or anything in between. The music on my iTunes server is at CD quality and plays through the same D/A convertors into my HiFi as my CD player so there's no difference in quality whether I play the actual CD or the version stored on the computer hard drive. Also my computer hardware only cost a little bit more than my CD player, so if you're serious about your music listening experience it's still possible to have the same audio quality but more listening flexibility for a similar price.
Indeed; many, many convenience features for no loss in audio quality. I do get it. However the thread is about the Brennan system in particular, and as I've said already I'd need a better reason than convenience to spend my money on one. We're all giving opinions here aren't we? This is mine.
And where do you listen to music? In your 'office' on your computer while you're doing something else, or in a comfortable 'lounge' setting listening carefully to a high-quality system? I like to do both, but they are very different experiences and have a bearing on what technology you're going to use for the purpose... IMHO, YMMV and so on and so forth.
Yup, fair point. If I'm not in the lounge it'll be the iPhone or the laptop. Isn't the Brennan supposed to sit in your lounge as part of your HiFi though? As such it has the status of a convenience item. If the HiFi was integrated into the house so that you could have the audio experience as you moved around then I could see the point - sort of. I guess what I'm saying is that I'd rather spend the money elsewhere in the audio chain - or indeed on more music. Then again, I've done far too many stupid things with money over the years to criticise anyone else for their choices.
-
No playlists. No random choice. No automatic skipping of duff tracks on an album. That's just 3 for starters.
Well my CD player has a remote so that pretty much takes care of choices 2 and 3. As for playlists, meh! Don't get me wrong - I was an IT coordinator in a previous life, have pretty much my entire CD collection (plus a number of movies) on iTunes, and if I say so myself have a good working relationship with technology of all kinds. My point is that the whole purpose of HiFi is surely to reproduce music the best it can. None of the items listed above has anything to do with that. If folks want to spend their hard-earned on such kit, far be it from me to stand in anybody's way. I'm just wondering why anybody would feel they need to spend this much money so they can have playlists and random selections.
-
I just know I'm gonna sound like a philistine for saying this but can somebody tell me what's hard about taking a CD out of it's case, inserting it into your CD player and pressing 'play'?
-
Yep. I've done a few imports over the years. As long as you budget for the extras there should be no problem. Calling them hidden charges suggests they're somehow underhand or sneaky, which they're not. It's a combination of transit costs (which you should surely expect to pay when bringing something several thousand miles across an ocean) and tax (which is set by HMRC and is available to anybody who checks their website). So, not hidden at all.

Proper fingering technique ( no dirty's please )
leftybassman392 replied to norvegicusbass's topic in General Discussion
Avoiding open strings with this piece is definitely making your life harder - for one thing there's a sprinkling of low E's at various points. Not that you shouldn't give it a go mind - turning a problem into a challenge and so on... Are you doing it on a 5-string by any chance? I just found what seems to be the standard tab for it and found it a bit awkward myself (allowing yourself to play open strings does open it up) - but you can have the link anyway. Also it's just a tab so you get no phrasing at all! Here it is: http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/j/johann_sebastian_bach/cello_suite_no_1_in_g_maj_btab.htm -
Looking for a new lightweight rig, any suggestions please
leftybassman392 replied to police squad's topic in Amps and Cabs
I just took delivery of my GB Streamliner 600 and a Vanderkley 112EXT last weekend and am mightily impressed both with the sound and the (lack of) weight at around 17 Kg for the pair. Expensive, but well worth it IMHO. I don't do dewy-eyed over amps, but I really think this could be the keeper. Having said that, someone brought a BF cab to the Lefty Bass Bash and it sounded awesome paired with a TC Staccatto - not to mention the Aguilar rig that Born 2B Mild brought from Bassgear - TH350 + SL112 which weighed next to nothing and sounded pretty good as well, so what do I know?
