1.
We already contact anyone that goes a bit OTT with their bumping even if they delete their previous bumps.
Well in that case I don't really see the need to do anything further. What's wrong with trusting people in the absence of evidence to the contrary?
2.
I think he might have meant why are we replying to the thread mate.
This. Well, sort of. I'm just interested to know if there's a useful piece of research in the offing or whether (as I believe) it's more of a lighthearted 'tell us a little bit about yourself' - you know - relaxed, whimsical; a chance to unwind a bit. Personally I found it quite therapeutic. Cheers mate.
3. Hi there and welcome from another fellow Lefty. As Bluejay said, there's quite a bunch of us on here. Hope you enjoy the forum. If you're interested, we're having a Lefty Bass gathering on Sunday 1st April (there is a thread in the 'Events' forum if you want o find out more). If you think you may be able to get across, send a PM to Patch006. If not, don't worry as there will be lots of pictures and vids.
4. Just starting to get back into (relatively serious) practice after quite a long layoff due to various medical issues. Looking to get into a band sometime soon but happy to wait until the right one comes along. May even do a little bit of teaching again (although I don't miss it as much as I thought I would). These days think of myself as semi-retired. Before the layoff I had played in a series of individual bands, and earned the bulk of my living teaching guitar and bass, both at home and in schools as a county peri. It was my main occupation (although I did have a small project studio and did some P.A. hire). Although my actual playing commitments were fairly small-scale and infrequent in later years I still thought of myself as a professional player since I earned my entire annual income through my involvement in musical activities. Like others, I can't find a category that covers that lot. While I'm here, may I observe that I'm very impressed at the generously forthcoming nature of the BC community, in that after some 80 posts from a whole bunch of people nobody's asked why we're doing it. I'm not trying to be the Vogon at the Hay Festival, but, you know, why are we doing it? If it's just a bit of fun that's fine, but just so we know.....?
5.
Hmmm interesting. I'd like to know if it lives up to this: In a live setting.
Actually I can vouch for the 'sitting or standing' bit - two of the four speakers fire upwards, and so the answer is 'yes' (as in 'yes I can confirm that it does sound the same sitting or standing'). As for the 'near or far' bit, I'll let you know when I've done one, but don't hold your breath. It's louder than you'd think, but against a full kit and a couple of guitarists at full tilt..... not to mention the chattering masses? I've met several people who've actually spoken to Phil Jones (one of whom actually worked for him), and apparently he's a complete d*** with a personality somewhere between autistic and psychopathic. He does make nice amps though, even if his design philosophy isn't to everybody's taste (which, clearly, it isn't).
6. My current amp of choice: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/PJB_Flightcase.html Not this particular one obviously, but mine is identical (couldn't be ar**d to take a photo and upload it to Photobucket is all). A full 13" tall and a meaty 24lb in weight. Never gigged as I'm currently 'between bands' since my back injury, but I used it to rehearse with a modern jazz band with two guitars, sax and drums, and never had any trouble being heard. Records beautifully too. To hear it, follow this link: http://www.myspace.com/consortiumsessionplayers and have a listen to a couple of the audio-only tracks (I recommend either 'Wing & a Prayer' or 'Drop & Roll'). Sei Original, DI from the amp straight into the desk - no effects, no edits, very little mixing (just to balance levels). Please be kind - it was a very early rehearsal ( I was playing the songs for the second or third time ever IIRC). In case you're interested, the video is taken from a live gig using the TC RH450/RS210 rig I had at the time (still pretty small but a bit big for this thread I suspect) - recorded on a cheapie little DVR I believe (hence the, er, basic sound quality).
7. I don't know if anybody's suggested this already, but what about a limit on bump frequency? Regulars do it anyway, and genuine newbie sellers surely wouldn't mind. The only ones who would object would be the cynics who post and then bump ad nauseam in an attempt to secure a quick sale so they can bugger off again (who are surely the very ones we want to be rid of anyway, n'est pas?).
8. Four weeks and counting folks. Are there still any outstanding issues with getting there? Anybody wanting to attend and still struggling with transport? Also, please make sure you get your details to Patch as soon as (you should have received an email by now - if not please contact either myself or Patch). We'll be looking to send out the registration forms and travel information in the week before the event (so you still have a bit of time), but we're trying to avoid having to process a whole bunch of registration requests at the last minute if we can. Andy
9.
What kind of venues are you playing, and does the bass go through the PA? I found my M300 and 6B cab was too "polite" in most pubs and small clubs, and you'd be pushing less air with the PB300. Cheers Gareth
No venues right now but looking to get back into it after a lengthy layoff with back problems. I would think P&C is the most likely though. Last band I played in was a modern jazz outfit, where I used the Flightcase for rehearsal/recording and the TC for gigs. Come to think of it, if I did get the TC I'd pretty much be back to the status quo. Hmmm... TBH I really liked the TC - cut through 2 guitars, enthusiastic drummer and sax very nicely (no p.a. 'cos nobody sang!) I do take your point, but I'd still like to know more about the PJB. I think I may pop over to Bass Direct with the old girl (my bass that is, not my wife...) and check it out for myself.
10. It's a nice photo - very much in keeping with the genre I would say. Slight shame about the music stand sillhouette in the foreground IMHO, but even so...
11. Sorry to be a pain, but I've been asked to do this before. Your chances of pleasing everybody AND having a suitably portable system AND having a good enough system for Rock Nights is fairly slim I'm afraid. You really should learn how to duck when questions like this get asked, because it's invariably a poisoned chalice. It will help if you can get some info regarding priorities (i.e. what it's to be used for), otherwise it's a bit of a guessing game as to what you really need. If rock nights and dramatic performance is low on the list you may find yourself having to settle for a Passport after all, but trust me, whatever the blurb may tell you, a hall p.a. system it ain't!. Apologies if this sounds presumptuous but from what you've said I have a slight worry that whoever's asked for this has in mind something like a pumped-up compact HiFi system, and wants to be able to trundle it around the school on a small trolley at need. Edit: don't even think about aiming to make it teacher-proof. Not going to happen.
12.
Thank you for posting, When I suggested a 'regular' type PA (with AUX) the school said They would prefer a built in CD player also... Do you/anybody know of anything with that?
Is it to be properly plumbed in or does it (as I suspect) need to be portable? How many channels? Does the price include mics, stands, cables, etc.? I've never come across a remotely half-decent p.a. mixer with a built-in CD player, but maybe others know better. Edit: having seen a Passport system in action I can tell you that it's unlikely to be either powerful enough or of sufficient quality to meet your needs. It's really designed for small (as in 'very small' venues). I've never seen a school hall that fits that description. The laptop suggestion is good though on several counts:- 1. there's liable to be any number available in the school; 2. members of staff can generate their own playlists on their own laptop; 3. you won't need to budget for it and can use the money to get a better system. As a bare minimum you'll need to budget for:- mixer (possibly powered), power amp (unless your mixer is powered); decent speakers (don't skimp on these - decent mixers and power amps are both easy and cheap to source, but if you get cheap speakers you'll stand a good chance of wasting the money you've spent on everything else); cables as required. Depending on what it's to be used for (IME school p.a. systems need to be flexible as they could be asked to do a lot of different jobs), you will likely also need to budget for a number of mics, stands and leads, and possibly a cable snake as well.
13. http://www.bassdirec.../PJB_PB300.html Anybody got one or tried one and formed an opinion about it? I have a Flightcase which these days is used for practice purposes. I can't decide whether to go this route to get a 400w gigging rig, or get a s/h RH450 (friend of mine has offered me one at a fair price ) and a 2x10 or 2x12 cab (possibly 2 off 1x12). I used to have an RH450 plus 2x10 so I know what to expect from that lot. I've had PJB gear of one sort or another for a few years so know roughly what to expect from that as well. Very similar rated o/p (not that it matters) and total outlay will be about the same so it's a straight choice. The complication is that I like both and could see me using whichever I chose just as easily. It all hinges on the PB300 really. Anybody?
14. Go for it! The nice thing for me about different tunings is that you're exploring different ways the instrument can be developed and used. It's not quite the same as chord based tunings that you get on, say, a 5-string Banjo or with open tunings on a guitar. Chord based tunings are usually there to facilitate a specific style or song or method, whereas tuning in fourths across a Guitar or fifths across a Mandolin have more to do with rethinking the way the instrument works, and for me are much more interesting.
15. We're now officially a global event folks... http://leftyfretz.com/
16. Just make sure you turn up at the Lefty Bass Bash matey. We'll sort you out! Seriously, I've been looking at starting to get out there again myself. I've just started to put out a few feelers and I'll wait awhile to see if anything turns up. Sometimes you just need to be patient (easier said than done I know...)
17. You've come to the right place my son! Or is that the left place.....? I've never had any trouble getting lefty parts from anywhere I've tried. Surprised you're having trouble getting stuff on eBay, as it used to be pretty good (to be fair, I haven't bought off eBay for a couple of years now...). You could try the 'Items Wanted' thread on this forum (look under 'Basschat Marketplace'). Or you could try asking in this thread for the items you want. For shopping, there is a BC member quite near you (Patch006) who will know the best places to shop, but I do know there's a branch of Manson's in Exeter, which I dropped by on a visit recently and was very impressed.
18.
I just saw this 'tweet' from BGM so I re-tweeted the original tweet so now I'm tweeting it too... http://bassguitarmag...guitar-day.html ped
Outstanding! Patch was a bit concerned that he'd missed the copy deadline, but this looks pretty good to me.
19.
where abouts in devon do u live. as i am in barnstaple. tempted to go if i can get the night of work
I sense a double-team in the offing...
20.
With The Blues Brothers Tribute it's Black Suit/White Shirt/White Socks/Black Tie and sunglasses. The function band has logo'd shirts in 2 different colours worn wioth black pants. The Jazz guys it's "whatever"
I tried playing in shades once because I thought it would look really cool. Couldn't see a ****ing thing and had to take them off after the first song. What a gip! Having said that, I used to wear a rather fetching black suede waistcoat over my denim shirt & jeans for a Blues band, which I'm reliably informed definitely looked the part - especially with the black Strat and thick leather strap.....
21.
Another amp series i'm looking forward to hearing! BassChat makes my wallet run for cover!
I tried this amp's baby brother over at Bass Direct a couple of weeks ago through a couple of Vanderkley cabs. Absolutely awesome. Good luck with the sale Redlawman.
22.
So when you asked, and then after being asked a question that will determine the answer, declared that you already know the answer but aren't telling, you were just trolling?
Ah. I see. You're asking about the plywood thing and have elected not to respond at all to the main thrust of the post. What a surprise. However, to answer you directly, surely the whole point of a rhetorical question is that it is reasonable to assume the the 'questioner' knows the answer. But of course you didn't. You just assumed I was too stupid or too naive to know what plywood is. I'll ask the question again and see if I can get a response this time. Don't you think enough is enough on this topic?
23.
The short answer is that most of what we hear as a note is not the fundamental frequency, and it's actually different combinations of harmonics right up the string which make up the sound we hear.
I know. The idea has been a staple of the budget HiFi market for decades. The ears pick up the harmonics and the brain extrapolates downwards. Nevertheless, many modern bass cabs are still producing useful output at around 35 Hz, so you are still physically hearing the fundamental frequency of a low B. It's a situation any sensible musician should want, but is only possible through advances in both driver technology and cabinet design. It's a tradeoff situation, and a point comes when it's physically impractical to build a cabinet to reproduce such low notes. Actually though, I'm more concerned at the need some musicians appear to feel to play notes at the very limit of human hearing. Given that most people are struggling to hear them at all, what's the point of playing them? Surely the whole idea of powerful deep bass is to play notes that people can physically hear, rather than have their brains fill in the gaps. Call me an old fart if you must, but I don't get it. It puts me in mind of Nigel Tuffnell's Marshall amps (whose controls all went up to 11).
24. Actually (and, hand on heart, I'm not having a go at anyone) it was a rhetorical question. I know very well what it is, and have met it's maker on a number of occasions. I started this thread a couple of years ago because I was considering getting a bass made for me, and wanted to know the extent to which the wood dictated the sound. The mods in their wisdom pinned it so that everyone who wanted to could have a say. For some time I read every post assiduously, no matter how leftfield or counterintuitive they seemed. Eventually I stopped reading because it became clear to me that it had stopped being a discussion of the issues and had become a battle to win - almost at any cost - an argument between two polarised views. As luck would have it I sustained quite a serious back injury and had to give up playing for some considerable time so the purchase never materialised (at least not in the way I'd planned). I hardly looked at the thread again until a week or two ago. Lo and behold, people are still 'debating' tonewoods vs. plywood. As the original poster of this thread, may I respectfully suggest that we allow it to die a peaceful death (or at least a period of repose). I happily concede the detailed knowledge the various protagonists have brought to bear and the passion of the various convictions on display, and I do understand people's reluctance to wade through 11 pages and well over 200 posts (some very long and closely argued) before posting; but guys, really, are we saying anything now that hasn't been well covered already? I say this with no malice toward anyone currently posting, but enough, surely, is enough? If you think you're still conveying new and useful information then by all means carry on, but I have my doubts as to who else is still listening.
25. I have a SeiBass Original with a Mahogany core, and what look like thin Ebony shims and Walnut facings front and back. It also has a neck made up of alternate layers of Maple and a dark wood whose identity I'm not sure of but could be a different kind of Mahogany in the body - 7 pieces in all. Oh, and a piece of Ebony at the front. Can somebody please tell me whether this is ply?
