1. I do love a good 'old school' rock anthem: Sweet Child O' Mine by, G'n'R And if anyone thinks it's cheesy and a bit too obvious, well I just don't care.
2. Thanks for that Jakes. Made my day. One of my very favourite Peter Gabriel songs, and a lovely, lovely version. Definitely J.B. on guitar too for me . I've always liked Tal's playing, and if it's good enough for the likes of Herbie Hancock then that'll certainly do for me.
3. I need to prefix any comments I make here by saying that I'm biased because I used to know and work with Paul Balmer at Northants Music Service. I should also emphasize that I have nothing to gain financially by anything I might say about his books It's brilliant! It covers pretty much anything you might want to know about servicing pretty much any variant of the P-bass or Jazz, plus a bunch of others as well. It also contains a collection of player profiles (it's a personal choice of his and so might not include people you might think should be included). If anything it will be a bit specialised for a lot of people - it's a Haynes servicing manual! If you need a frame of reference, he has produced similar manuals for the Telecaster and Stratocaster which are now considered standard reference works for those instruments. I have mine (which I paid for, just so you know) in front of me as I write this. If you want any more detail, PM me.
4.
Could it be this strange looking beast..... I used to be in a band (late 80's) with a lad who said that it was his uncle who played the flute on this track. He did not look Borat though!
It's not the one I remember, but it'll do for a start. I'm still not discounting the idea that I dreamt it all, of course. Thanks for finding that one. As it happens it's the first time I've seen Roddy playing that guitar as well. In the early days he played a black Les Paul (I had remembered it as a Black Beauty but I found some footage recently that has caused me to have some doubts).
5.
It's a decent read and Mr Panter is an amusing story teller I did see a copy floating around on here as a 'pass it on' .....
Anybody?
6.
Check out Sk'ad For Life his biography - scanned through I'm sure he mentioned a hollowbody bass but I think it was a Hofner.
Ah. It could have been come to think of it. I've been trying to find images of him playing it but have drawn a complete blank so far. My memory for such details always been a bit iffy, but normally I just let it ride. This one's got under my skin a bit because I knew him and I feel stupid that I can't bring the details properly to mind. Perhaps I should read the book! Thanks for looking.
7. I have a question that's been bugging me for a while. During the late '70's and '80's I lived in Coventry, and got to know Horace a little in the early days of the Specials - couldn't honestly say we were proper mates, but he was a good friend of my neighbour and we hung out together from time to time. (All this was before the band really took off - I didn't see much of him after that!) I went to a number of their local gigs of course, and he was well known for playing Fenders. However I have a distinct recollection of him playing an Epiphone Rivoli at one point but have been unable to trace it. I have a feeling that it might have been for a tv show - TOTP perhaps? I know it's not key to the history of the band or anything, but I just can't shake it. I remember it mostly because it's such a big instrument and he's kind of a small man, and he had this slightly unusual posture where he used to hold the instrument quite high on his chest (which he now seems to have lost of course!). Anybody out there remember this, or have I finally lost it altogether?
8.
hey LBM, I am awaiting the thumb price!
Hi there. It's in hand, but I'll need to get it to the Bass Gallery (unless you know a good Warwick specialist in the Birmingham area). If it goes to plan should be available in around 2 weeks - maybe a bit less.
9. I''ve put my '77 Jazz Lefty up for sale on the Lefty Market Thread. Here's the link: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/36318-big-lefty-market-thread/page__st__940 It's post #953. Started at £1700 ono, it's now at £1600 ono.
10. I think it's time I dropped the price on the '77 Jazz (you'll find details on page 48, post #953). Now asking £1600 ono. Always willing to negotiate provided folks remember it's a vintage classic. I know times is hard but TBH I am a little surprised that it's generated so little response (even to tell me it's too expensive). If anybody has any thoughts they don't want to put up on the thread they can always PM me.
11. Note to OP: You will find this topic has been discussed at great length on BC. Here's the link: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/73234-tonewoods/
12. A little stylistic point you might want to consider: when using the Mixolydian scale, you could try sliding up to the major third from the minor third - it gives the progression a nice lazy, bluesy feel. From Bilbo's example, when playing around the E7 chord, you fret a G natural just before the beat and slide up to the G# as it comes round. The reason this works is that the true Blues third is actually neither a minor third nor a major third, but somewhere in between. As it happens you can also do it at the major 6th/flat7th (C#/D in the E7 example) for the same reason. Theoretically it works on the flat 5th/perfect 5th - Bb/B - as well but I personally don't use it at that position as it doesn't sound as natural to me.
13. Since I put my '77 Jazz up for sale I've had quite a lot of enquiries about my other instruments! In order to stop those pesky PM's (and with full respect to those who've been very complimentary about the collection) can I just say this: In my time with the SEI I've developed a strong (some might even say unnatural) affection for it. In the short term at least it's not for sale (although it's time will no doubt come); The Thumb 5 BO will be up for sale in due course, but I want to get it serviced first - watch this space; The Roscoe 3000 will likewise be up for sale once I've had it serviced; The others will be progressively sold off in the New Year. I'm aware that not many people know about Regenerate Guitar Works and their products. It's a single guy who lives in the Seattle area and mostly makes high end lookalikes of Fender originals. I currently have two of his basses, and you can find pictures of them here (it's the two lefties at the bottom of the page): http://regenerateguitarworks.com/?page_id=498 You need to hold them and play them to appreciate just how good they are. More info as it becomes available.
14. Bump for my '77 Jazz a bit further up this page. In case anybody missed it, the neck tray is apparently also a later addition, having been taken off a Pbass at some point in it's life.
15. Apologies Jeroen. I didn't get your drift about the neck p/u tray first time round. Never does any harm to actually be awake! So, to reiterate: it's a '77, and apart from both the ashtrays it's all original as far as I know. I'll be happy to send more detailed shots to anyone who wants them (but not for a few days as I'm currently away from home).
16.
Very, very pretty! It would look even better with the proper cover over the neck pickup This one belongs on a Precision Bass. Are you planning on selling your SEI at some point? Do you still own the headless Shuker too?
Hi Jeroen. Long time no see. Yeah, it's a pity about the ashtray but I had it available and it fitted so I decided to make some use of it. I can always take it off if it helps to sell the instrument! I did think about offering it on Leftybass as I know there's a bit of interest over there. We'll see... As to the SEI, I'm actually quite conflicted about that one. It was my last main instrument and I'm still very attached to it. At some point I guess it'll go the same way as the others, but I'm resisting it as long as I can. Interestingly, you're the third person that's asked about it despite the fact that it's not officially for sale! Perhaps someone's trying to tell me something... The Shuker went a little while ago. Much as I liked it I couldn't justify keeping it as well as the SEI.
17. I think we've gone a bit off-topic guys - and the lefthanded debate has been covered several times in my time as a member (a little over 2 years) - usually winding up as a slanging match between those who get it and those who don't. To answer the OP's question, there's no musical reason why a lefthanded instrument needs to be anything other than a mirror image of a righthander. To be picky, the pots issue is simply a part of the mirror image thing - some of you may need to think about that one for a while. (The lefthanded equivalent of a log pot is an antilog pot I believe.) If the manufacturer gets it correct it should all feel and work the same only the other way round. Generally speaking Japanese and English makers (especially bespoke luthiers) are best at this, and American makers are historically the worst - hopefully they've improved since I last bought an American instrument. Oh, and there is one other thing about lefthanded instruments that you might like to think about - they usually cost more - which is a bad thing! Hope this helps.
18. Coo, this place has changed a bit since I was last here! Anyway, to business; about this time last year I sold off all my studio and stage gear as part of my progressive withdrawal from active duty. It went well, with almost everything finding a suitable home. Now it's time to start shifting some of my instruments. Not selling everything this time, but I will be reducing my stock somewhat. At some point in the foreseeable future I'll be putting up details of my Thumb 5 BO, Roscoe 3000 fretless and probably a couple of others as well (I haven't finally decided yet),but let's start with.... This: It's a '77, and apart from the main ashtray is completely original as far as I know. As you can see from the photos it's lived a full life, but it sounds and plays just as it should. The neck pocket is a very nice fit (unlike some of it's brethren). It's quite heavy, but certainly not the heaviest I've seen. I'm afraid I don't have the original case, but will be able to lay my hands on something suitable. I've had it for around 2 years, and before that it was owned by Deezbar of this forum. I haven't asked him, but I'm sure he won't mind answering the odd question about it 'cos he's a nice bloke! Very busy last I heard though... I did a trade with him for my '84 Wal. I'm looking to sell at a fair price, so let's start with [s]£1700[/s] £1600 and see where it goes. As always I'm happy to be flexible and will discuss any fair offer (especially in the present climate so helpfully visited on us by the banks - thanks guys ), but it's a good working example of a vintage classic instrument so let's keep it real please. As always, I'm happy to answer any and all sensible questions, and will be pleased to deliver it more or less anywhere in mainland UK for fuel at 25p/mile round trip (I live in the Sutton Coldfield area these days so am well within range of a surprising range of places) Please ask if you want more photos. Feel free to check my feedback - I'm happy to be judged by the people I've traded with.
19. To my amazement they made nearly £150! Thanks to Tyron for making life easier for me, and to those who pointed out they might be worth something in the first place. Cheers to all of you. Andy
20.
so what happened to FREE and GONE ALREADY??
That was then, before I realised they were worth anything. Since then I've sold out!
