The shop where I work has various teaching and practice rooms for hire. A woman brought in a group of boys to use the practice room because they were going to form a band. They were all about 10 years old. As I set up the drum kit for them it became apparent that most of them hadn't played an instrument before. I was asked if they could borrow a bass guitar and when I returned with the instrument I said "Ok who's in charge?" , one boy replied "that will be joe , he's gone to get some drum sticks". "No , I meant who's playing bass? If you play bass you're in charge!" The boy said "Wow , that's me!" and took the bass. As I left I heard him say "Right , let's have a rule -nobody plays anything unless I say so....."

There were other reasons, time ,money , I wasn't allowed much creative input, they took on a drummer that I didn't think was right for the band , I didn't think it was going anywhere. I was with them for nearly a year, they are still going.

I joined a band because I fancied the singer, when it became obvious that she wasn't interested in me I quit.

I'm trying to get some work for my new band. We are a tongue in cheek country rock / southern rock trio (music for rednecks) , we formed the band as an attempt to earn some extra cash and having played a triumphant first gig we are now thinking "What now?" Having spent most of my time playing original material and not worrying about the commercial side of things I'm not sure where to plug this new band. Our guitarist suggested that we play Wham's Club Tropicana in a hill billy style, sadly I don't have video evidence but it was the most talked about song in our set.

So we just played our first gig....Bloody brilliant! It was intended to be a low key first outing but everyone turned out and reassuringly a few faces we didn't recognize were there too and enjoying it. Lots of good feedback. About a year ago I started a thread about an idea I'd had to keep a log book where I recorded when I'd strung my basses and what with. I was almost universally derided! However since then I have kept this up and can tell you exactly when I strung each bass , type of string, any modifications made to set up etc, gigs played. Personally I like the new string sound and a high tension. I found Fenders too sloppy and felt the tone was a bit dull. I used D'Adarios for a long time but have mostly gone over to Rotosound as they seem to keep their zing a bit longer (and have a higher tension)

If I ever went twin neck again I'd go headless like this: A conventional twin is very bulky , it really pinned me down on stage. I also found that I couldn't quite get a playing position that was perfect for both necks.

No , regular strings, the holes in the string retainer were a little small I drilled them out.

I've been playing this for a few months now and it's become my main bass, the sound and feel are just right. The balance on the strap is so good it just stays where you put it. Because of the reduced body it's easy for me to reach around to grab my flute (I have to do this mid song at times) nothing gets in the way. The sustain goes on forever. My thoughts on the headless bridge etc : The string spacing was wider than I wanted so I had to grind bits off the nut and use the bass' original plastic nut to set the spacing, the string retainer seems to work well. The bridge is good, I had a Hohner headless years ago and it's not quite as good as that but ok. When new the bridge saddles needs a bit of sanding down to stop them jamming against each other (I had to drill out the holes in the string retainer too) When tuning some of the knobs are a bit stiff, I have strong fingers but it can be tricky. I need to investigate oiling or greasing the appropriate parts. I'd give them 7/10 as they came out of the box , 8/10 now.

I've been doing it for five years now and the cast have mostly been great. The only problem I can remember was last year , the ugly sister had to sing "Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me" . They kept complaining that we were playing it too fast (we were playing it at the same tempo used in rehearsal) so we slowed it down by 5 bpm. It was still too fast , we slowed it again , and again until it crawled along . They then complained it was too slow!
