1. My twin neck was made from cherry, it's not at all heavy, the only negative is that it's not very hard wearing, easily dented or scratched. I oiled the wood with linseed oil so it came out a darker colour.
2. Your reply should have been: "I've been in the business all my life, i have good gear , good image, pro attitude and I'll happily bend over backwards to accommodate whatever demands are placed upon me by your band , I agree to do this without knowing anything about your band's repertoire, location, etc, yours sincerely, your bitch."
3. There is a school of thought amongst certain people that "professionalism" equates to being rude/pushy/up-tight/egotistical/self centred/self important and so bloody great they can get away with all the aforementioned unpleasantness. Thankfully this band are only "semi-pro" , best avoided just in case (after a lifetime in the business) they turn pro.
4. Update: i did all the work that I'd planned to do today quicker than I expected so I had an hour to kill before the school run. I'd examined the neck carefully and noticed that the board was still very uneven. I took the neck off and sanded it down with 150 grit paper stuck to the underside of a plane. I spent about 20 minutes on it paying special attention to the heel end where i'd had the clearance issues. I've just put the neck back on and the early signs are of a huge improvement, super low action, all notes nice and clear. If this is foreplay, I'm a dead man.
5. Thanks everyone, yes the strings are Fender Black nylons, I love to tone and feel of them, slightly lower tension than most strings. The strings aren't getting enough clearance from about 15th fret position, I'll sort it out over the next few weeks. I won't be using it on this weekend's recordings, I won't have time to perfect it before then, I'll use the mark 2.
6. To recap: Version 1: (in all it's plywood glory) Version 2 : Version 3:
7. Well, not quite finished, I still need to make the cover for the wiring and there are a few duff notes at the dusty end but I've reached the "take it out and play it for a while to find/solve teething problems" stage. I hope to rehearse on Wednesday (my first chance to plug it in) and record on Saturday.
8. This looks like it's from the California Jam, looks like the same bass, but a better view of the pickups.
9. Looks a bit Guildesque to me, the second one is a wonderful picture!
10. I'm trying some old strings on to get the board / set up finished, I don't have my amp at home, hope to hear what this bass sounds like on wednesday.
11. Damn fine screw, just what the doctor ordered.
12. this gig is(?) in Bath , 61 miles from Poole, see you there!
13.
Seems pretty pointless to me. Could almost as easily put on your own gig which would be more fun and not lining someone else's pockets.
My thoughts also.
14. "if you bring in 80 people" 90% of fliers will be stuffed into the pockets of people who will make no effort to go and will forget all about it , 9% will think about going but forget/find some other excuse, 1% might turn up , some of those might remember their flier. It's not about the money, I just can't see anyone turning up. "But if it's in term time students will come" - they aren't going to shell out £5 to get into a venue on a monday night on the off-chance that the band that they've never heard of is to their liking.
15. We've been offered a gig at a well known venue in a town 30 miles away where the band we aren't known. The deal is that we are given fliers advertizing the gig, every punter who pays £5 to get in and hands in a flier we get £1 , basically lazy venue getting us plug away like mad and get people in on a quiet night. Even if we leaflet every gig we play for six months I recon nobody will turn up. We don't do it for the money (middle aged folky/originals band) but I couldn't be bothered busting a gut to play to (at best) five or six die hard friends and famillly that we have to nag into turning out. I'm the only one in the band who sees it this way , am I being too pessimistic?
16. Once it kicks in it's the most uplifting thing ever and that Entwistle chap could get to be quite good if he put his mind to it.
17. Now with knobs on:
18. Daughter : what music are you listening to ? Me: Pink Floyd Daughter: are you in that band? So , so tempted.
19.
Your not alone.I hate the whole idea of facebook and cant seeme ever changing my mind. my bands pages are all done by othe members, the whole likes and facebook friends thing just seems silly. Maybe its old age, or maybe I,m just a miserable old git.
If you don't like it, don't use it.
20. Don't forget to "like " the basschat page.
21. I had a baritone to set up for a friend, didn't do anything for me. I have an acoustic bass with 32" and it is certainly a tempting idea. With the 32" I could but the bridge further along the body and probably use the original routing (or at least cover it with tele style bride)
22. I've had a quick look through and liked anything that I thought we have something in common with and those who took the time to like us. I will return and check out the music as time allows.
23. I ordered 50 earlier this evening, i'll report back.
24.
tele body is very short so it would neck dive like crazy as a bass, How about 32" scale to help neck dive Cut 5mm off the top and stick a nice piece of wood on the top Stick a 50's single coil P pickup in the bridge jazz position and make it look like a telecaster esquire
Some good points: Re: neck dive, I'd prefer a 34" if poss , so I'll check it with a spare neck before I commit to anything. Re pickups , I was thinking a single coil neck and possibly an uncovered standard P at the bridge. something like this only I'll round off the bobbin to look like a single pickup like you find on a tele guitar.
