Nice bass , shame about the suit!
-
One of the others is lending it to me , I think the label says "Hero, California ranch wear" it's made from horrible nylon and has poppers instead of buttons , my wife thinks it was made for a stripper. A google search for "western shirt" will find you plenty of similar items.

I have a series of gigs coming up depping on bass for a local (I think slightly tongue in cheek) country band.

Actually, I'm talking out of my hat re whammy bars on basses. I often find that if something is invented and scarcely used or google throws up very few examples it probably never caught on - why ? Because it's probably flawed in some way or didn't prove to be of much use. I have a Shine 5 string, good value , I turned mine fretless, not the sound i was after but an interesting exercise.

A bridge!
-
Before you spend a lot of time , effort and money building this thing, buy a cheap five string , see how much use you get out of it. Play it for while, then think what changes would you make? A six string usually has an extra high C string. Also , ditch the whammy bar.

I like it. My wife asked me what i was looking at , I said " a bass like mine , only pink.!" "errr yuk!" Me " No it's rather beautiful" She " how can a bass be beautiful?"

I created a page a couple of years back for my solo stuff and I tried to create a second page for my band recently. I started the new page (no content yet) but can't seem to sinc the new page with the band's facebook page. I only seem to get my original page to sinc up to it. any Ideas? I could live without the original page now if I had to.

I don't think so! To bring people who haven't heard or don't care up to speed, there was a rumor going round that Fender black nylon strings had changed. I've just taken delivery of a set from Stringsdirect and they would appear to be the same as the set I ordered in October 2010. Shiny , black and with a textured surface. I've not put them on a bass yet and probably won't for a while , I just bought them as a security blanket because I have some well paid gigs on fretless coming up.

We'd seen him play and he really can. He'd expressed an interest in what we were doing , we asked if he fancied playing with us. We had a busy period to get through that didn't allow time for training up new additions to the line up and agreed to get together in two months for what we assumed was only a formality of an audition. As it turned out he was either incapable or too lazy to work guitar parts out for himself, either way he wasn't going to be any use to us, after two numbers we agreed to forget the idea.
There's probably a chap posting on Guitarchat right now about this strange audition he went to where the band thought they needed a second guitarist, but when they played there was no room in the arrangement for him to add a second guitar part...
almost exactly what once happened to my brother, went to an audition as lead guitarist, the band blasted through several songs leaving no gaps for him to fill.
-
Sounds like he only realized he was out of his depth once the audition started. We had a similar one, we gave the guy two months to start learning tunes from CDs , the first time he played with us his sat there doing nothing...."Er can you write me out a chord chart?"

This was taken during the sound check. It had been an odd day, third day of an otherwise rain soaked festival , I came in on Sunday in blazing sunshine (hence the silly hat) only to find that the whole site was under six inches of very wet mud. By the time of our gig I was plastered from the waist down. The stage was miraculously only slightly muddy and as the sound man was such a good guy I took my trainers off (I know trainers at at mudbath festival!) and played barefoot. I look a bit like Snufkin from the Moomins. Anyway , the sound on stage and off was superb despite the 15 minute set up/sound check while loud music was being played (we were also the first band to have a drummer that day. A great gig in the end , could have had a bigger crowd but isn't that so often the case. A link to someones flickr account showing mud covered naked women who were also at the festival. I can't find any pictured of mud covered naked men at Sunrise Celebration. http://www.flickr.com/photos/markfalmouth/7444244786/in/set-72157630294483132/

Sunrise celebration : more mud that Glastonbury 2007 only in a smaller area and without The Who.

A potter once told me that the ancient Chinese believed that only the gods could create perfect things so Chinese potters deliberately build imperfections into their work to avoid offending them. My playing has never offended the gods.

She's cheap, she's nasty and she "bangs like the privy door when the plague's in town" Miss P body, a true frankenbass made from an assortment of borrowed and recycled bits. Didn't get the Fender out of it's case at the last rehearsal.

As a matter of interest , how many of us run their band's facebook/myspace/website? Is it a duty that always falls to the bass player?

Always a guilty pleasure, only once was I compelled to vote. It made me proud to be British when our judging panel gave them top marks.

I see it's listed on Gumtree, surely if it's blesses by the Dalai Lama it would be on Bo Tree? (or under it)

What controls are most common? VVT, or perhaps VVTT? (I don't do actives)

I've seen a few basses with a two precision pickups, one in the usual place , one as a bridge pickup. I think BC Rich do them. What are they like? How do they compare to a P/J combo? I'm thinking of recycling some spare parts as a double P.
Is this festival the one in June at Monmouth? Dan
No. The discussion was good natured, no harm done.

I had a short discussion with the band member who was negotiating this gig last night, he saw sense and unless we get a radically different offer we're out.

The story: I get an email saying that the X festival would like us to play there, no money but free ticket + some food. We played it a couple of years back and it was fun. Although I am available my wife is working so I'll have the kids that weekend so everything is going to be a bit more complex. The gig is in South wales so I'll be paying to cross the bridge and probably won't be able to stay over , so I won't get to use my free ticket. Our lead guitarist can't make it but we might be able to get a really good electric fiddle player in as a dep, she knows most of our stuff anyway. At this point I'm still happy to do the gig. Then I get an email saying that one of the festival organizers wants to play "two or three" numbers with us on ...tea chest bass. This is a 45 min slot (it probably incudes the sound check) , it's getting to a point where I have no interest in playing the gig. I told them that as it's not the full band anyway and my attendance is tricky that weekend how about they do it as a smaller acoustic lineup and I'll sit it out. the others think it will get us brownie points but I just think it's a naff idea that I just can't cooperate with. I think I'm being fairly diplomatic here ( some I've told about this said "if they said that to me I'd tell them to F#CK @FF!")
