Yeah, one slip and i could write off the pup. To be honest if this bass was in a colour i liked i would make sure i sorted this out, but all this to get a black PG on to a bass im not really in love with (colour wise only) is a bit too much hassle.
I used to be very sceptical about pickup changes but the thumper made a real difference to my bass, far more than I thought it would -
Unfortunately not. As an example if i hook the PG over one end of one half of the pup, it covers part of the opposite screw hole, as well as the edge of the case. Another idea i had was to file down the lip around the coil. I figured this might help me squeeze it in to a smaller cover but it all seems like a lot of effort. Thanks anyway.
And the risk you are getting a bit near the delicate bits -
I forgot to mention at the start of this thread that I'd agreed with the Mods that anyone mentioning Hank Marvin would receive a severe reprimand and 3 months suspension form the forum. Carry on.
I played with Bruce Welch and Brian Bennett once, does that count?
Box size does make a big difference IMHO plus don't forget 2x12"=24" whereas 4x10"=40". I can't explain why that makes a difference apart from moving a lot more air but having just switched back from 12s to a 4x10 I can tell you it does. (edit for typo)
Unashamedly lifted from Alexs site Cone area is proportional to diameter squared so 4x10x10=400 whilst 2x15x15=450 so the 2x15 is 50 better. More accurate but still not entirely precise. Why not? Because speaker diameter is merely nominal diameter - basically the approximate size of the frame / baffle hole. The actual size of the cone is less because you have to subtract the frame width and some of the cone surround (the corrugated or rolled fabric bit around the edge of the cone). For one of our 15" woofers the actual cone diameter is 13" whilst for the other it's 13.2". For our 12" woofers it's 10.3" and 10.4". We don't currently use any 10"s but one of the best out there has an actual diameter of 8.3". For nominally 8"s it's about 6.5" whilst for 6" woofers it's about 5". So if we do those sums again we see that two 15"s have equal area to five 10"s, whilst two 12"s matches three 10"s. And then theres loads more about xmax as well how much the speaker moves Its really the whole package, the driver, the size, the porting

Wizard Thumper. Anyone Have Trouble Fitting One?

My thumper is in a 57 reissue with a ally pg. I remember having to file to fit, but it looks as if I only did the little semi circular bits where the retaining lugs go so maybe Laurences suggestion would work -
This one of my favourite P basses on this thread . . . .. I think they represent excelllent value for money , a fantastic bass with tone to match This in my bass wish list (which is growing daily)
I had a 50s classic vibe and I have played one of these as well. Great basses, and probably made in the same way as the us ones in the 50s and 60s
Does my 85 G&L SB1 count - it was designed by Leo, has his name on it, has the split pickup etc.. Precision Mk 3 ? Like This Not mine, but identical to it apart from the knobs If not I will own up to sunburst precision 1977 from new, but now long gone. Well made, great tone, but poorly set up at new.
They are great basses I would like one if I could find one at sensible money
I'm not sure that would work. I still have the Squier pups that fit but the coils from the Thumper wont fit the cover. Plus, Andy has already told me that these are standard Fender cases (size wise) so i think I'm stuck unless i do some filing. I did have another go today but its too much hassle.
I have a pickup from a cij bass with covers that are 65.7 long and 27.5 wide ie smaller tolerance Pm me your address and I will send them to you If it sorts the problem, send me the ones from the thumper, if it doesnt send em back -

Another plug for the silver series. I had a jazz and also a Hank Marvin strat which was one of the silver series. Good instruments both, and the Hank Marvin is starting to be a collectors piece amongst the Hank afficianadoes

Hi and welcome Used to go to the shoe many years ago when my best friend lived close by I will try to drag him out and come over one jam night, he is a great guitar player
-
Good luck, hope you get it back

I think Im the oddity that likes the original 1 3/4 p bass neck If I win the lottery Im going to order a coral pink lakland with a precision neck
-
I would like to try that combination of a Jazz Body with a precision neck, but with the normal jazz pickups.

I got the vernier out again and we have length wise Fralin 66.7 Lollar 65.3 MIM 65.2 EMG 65.6 Thumper 66.8 What you could do is to nut a new set of Fender covers as the cover is not fixed to the pick up, so perhaps a genuine fender cover would fit without filing http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GENUINE-FENDER-PRECI...=item20b68ccaf5 £5 from the states or I think I got one a while ago from Oasis in ringwood -
I put mine on wall hangers but I regret not getting a case with each bass, Im now buying the odd case, they are easier to sell/transport in a case, but I usually use a levys gig bag when gigging
