  1. No problems with my abm either apart from the bulb in the vu meter

    Replacement recieved in 24 hours at no charge.

    Compare that with the service i received from ampeg, on a faulty svt 3 head.

    I actually used to gig with a banner across my amp saying

    NEVER BUY AN AMPEG

    While there are some advantages with a combo, as a more mature member I find combos too heavy and a bit restricting. If you do want a combo, I loved my eden metro which was a really nice bit of kit, but heavy. There have been a few around here second hand, but they are quite pricey new, but Ihave seen tthem around at about your price range.

    I would go for a head and cab, which gives you the flexibility to add a different cab or change the head.

    Unfortunately, everyone has their different preferences, and while one person likes ashdown someone else wont.

    Unless you buy something really cheap, I dont think these anything thats truly awfull, just some things you will prefer to others.

  3. It depends on the value of the shipment, the weight, and who the carrier is.

    Customs dont [size=4]normally[/size] raise a charge if the charge is less than £7 except fags, booze and other things[costs more to do than its worth]

    Shipments through Royal mail seem to be less prone to charges that dhl and parcel force and the handling charge through royal mail is less than PF

    A few years ago I regularly got shipments value £50/60 without a charge from the us and once a pair of fralin p bass pickups no charge.

    You alsways seem to get charged if you have a tracked and insured parcel where a small packet seems to be far more likely to get away with it

    As you will see, the cons are more a personel preference rather than a fault of the bass. Compared to my Fender Jazz and ESP Jazz, it was very heavy. The tone, although being amazing, was not the right tone for me. The neck, despite being wonderfully thin, flat and smooth was the wrong shape for me and caused my hand to ache. Having moved to a more rounder Fender neck, I no longer get hand ache. As for the stiff, rigid feel, I find my ESP and Fender mould to me and move as I play. The DJ was very stiff and felt like I had a pole attached to me. My flexability or movement.

    As a bass the DJ I can't fault it and the quality was outstanding but as a bass, it was not right for me. My Fender MIA 75 Jazz re-issue on the other hand suits me perfectly and feels like an old friend. I suggest you try before you buy.[/quote]


    Just to add to that, the earlier skylines did have a weight issue on some basses, a problem that was aknowledged by Dan Lakin, and the specification was subsequently tightened right up. I had a beautifull CAR Skyline Jo osbourne that weighed 11 1/2 lbs. Very uncomfortable.
    Like all basses try before you by, but I would doubt you have a problem unless you have an older bass.

    Linuses comments are personal preferences but bear in mind the Duck Dunn and DJ are adaptations of the conventional jazz and precision.
    The Jazz clone is the jo osbourne, and the precision is the bob glaub.
    The Duck Dunn has a jazz neck on a precision body, and the Darryl Jones has aero pickups to give it a different sound to a jazz, and a revised and a downsized body, I cant remember if there was a change to the neck, and I cant find it on Lakland site.

    I still have 2 laklands and have owned in the past a number more. I think they are great basses, with impeccable customer service. Whether they are for you depends on you personal preference.

    Yes you can use car paint which is usually acrylic
    Cellulose is being phased out and depeinding on which witch doctor you listen to will make absolutely no difference or transform your instrument.

    I dont think fender use cellulose anymore as a norm although they may do in the customshop.

    grossly overspent at the moment and much too heavy but i would still love it.

    If its gor square magnets it could well be one of the original eminence, it looks in great condition o I dont suppse its had that much use.

  10. Actually Im not sure now, I misread your original post, sorry.
    If you had 2 footswitch inputs controlling 2 effects you would have 2 mono sockets and you could turn those on an off with the two buttons on the behringers switch which is a tad over £20.
    If there are 4 effects they must be stereo sockets so you would need two 2 button footswitches with stereo jack plugs, something like this

    I dont know if the ampeg needs latching or momentary contacts Non-latch mode momentarily engages the switch while you hold down the pedal, Latch mode changes the on/off status each time you press the pedal
    Have you asked ampeg ?

    Thats an interesting point.
    I was visiting the acoustic forum the other day and there was an ex JBL designer on there who said that when mounting JBLs, the goal was to use only 4 of the 8 mounting holes, and the bolts only just over finger tight. The argument being that the gasket did the sealing, and bolts should not be overtightened.
    Perhaps Alex or Bill might comment.

    Sometimes you just have to accept that you may not YET be able to play a song.

    Being in a band is more than playing your instrument. Its about being with people you like/or not having fun, but the best bit is the adrenaline buzz when youve played something well in front of an audience, or you seel them leaping about, the two are not always necessarily the same

    You also have to put your notes into the song. I have seen some very technically able bassists whose playing imo doesnt fir the song. if you are in a covers band, there are many songs where a root and 5th approach is appropriate to the song.
    There are others where something a little more adventurous is required.

    The best players are those whose playing complements the song. Play those roots and fiths, and find some other songs where you can stretch your playing.

    I do a lot of practise using midi files using cakewalk with the bass off. I can slow down or repeat ad infinitum a part that I have difficulty with. The midi files are often a bit suspect but its another tool to help stop you getting bored

  14. I find playing live with a band is where I get my enjoyment. Try advertising for a band to join or form your own.

    As old git said dont sell your gear. I nearly did that in the 80s, and my missus said dont do it and she was right. Five years later i was back at it and I havent enjoyed myself so much before.

    You probably need the challenge of working on some stuff you wouldnt normally do. Im not a lover of country music but I probably learnt more by playing in a 'dance band' and a country band than anything else i have ever done.
    stick with it.

  15. Ive played on a number of occasions two of my old bands where we reformed for a night or a charity gig.

    They were old covers so some gigs we rehearsed for but some we didnt. In one case I drove a 250 mile round trip for a rehearsal and again for the gig.

    Its only worth it if you are going to get some return out of it. If you are all mates and have a good time, and enjoy it, then why not.
    If the singers a pain, or you dont want to put the effort in, why bother.

    Im in the fortunate position that I get on pretty much most of the time with the others I play with. If I didnt, I would stay at home or join or form another band.

    Unless you are earning a living from it, why put yourself through grief
