1.
I do a similer thing with guitar pro 5. helped me learn a ton of stuff that way and get the timing right etc. well all but YYZ by rush. ive spent weeks on that song over the years and I can play about a minuite of it (badly)
Sometimes you just have to accept that you may not YET be able to play a song. Being in a band is more than playing your instrument. Its about being with people you like/or not having fun, but the best bit is the adrenaline buzz when youve played something well in front of an audience, or you seel them leaping about, the two are not always necessarily the same
2.
II cant write my own stuff unless you count roots, 3rds and 5ths so why do I have all this gear?
You also have to put your notes into the song. I have seen some very technically able bassists whose playing imo doesnt fir the song. if you are in a covers band, there are many songs where a root and 5th approach is appropriate to the song. There are others where something a little more adventurous is required. The best players are those whose playing complements the song. Play those roots and fiths, and find some other songs where you can stretch your playing. I do a lot of practise using midi files using cakewalk with the bass off. I can slow down or repeat ad infinitum a part that I have difficulty with. The midi files are often a bit suspect but its another tool to help stop you getting bored [£60 for your shuker ]
3. I find playing live with a band is where I get my enjoyment. Try advertising for a band to join or form your own. As old git said dont sell your gear. I nearly did that in the 80s, and my missus said dont do it and she was right. Five years later i was back at it and I havent enjoyed myself so much before. You probably need the challenge of working on some stuff you wouldnt normally do. Im not a lover of country music but I probably learnt more by playing in a 'dance band' and a country band than anything else i have ever done. stick with it.
4. Ive played on a number of occasions two of my old bands where we reformed for a night or a charity gig. They were old covers so some gigs we rehearsed for but some we didnt. In one case I drove a 250 mile round trip for a rehearsal and again for the gig. Its only worth it if you are going to get some return out of it. If you are all mates and have a good time, and enjoy it, then why not. If the singers a pain, or you dont want to put the effort in, why bother. Im in the fortunate position that I get on pretty much most of the time with the others I play with. If I didnt, I would stay at home or join or form another band. Unless you are earning a living from it, why put yourself through grief
5.
*sterling Sorry for being so anal
Perhaps thats why I play it so badly
6. Cheers for that
7. How did you strip the body [assuming you did] Ive got an old tokai I want to repsray, and Standard Nitromors wont touch it.
8. Heres another 20th anniversary and a stirling. I think the stirlings really underrated.
9. I had one of these, a 4 ohm version and it is a monster sounding cabinet. Although its a biggie its not difficult to move because of the tilt wheels and handles. Mine was not switchable, I dont think its technically possible to have 2 speakers switched 8 and 4, You could do 8 and 2 or 16 and 4 depending on the speakers inside I would think its loud on its own even Well worth the money If someone buys it I have a spare Royall cover
10. I have been asked how sloppy this neck joint is, there is a .020in gap at the bottom and .015 at the top. I will chuck in a gold neckplate and screws if anyone buys the pair
11.
When I get a moment, I'll add something to my site about how to minimise sonic problems in rehearsals and gigs. We spend so much time worrying about gear but it's all to no avail if we're hamstrung by witless guitarists that are stuck on eleven - maybe presenting them with some printed matter will help, as long as the words are kept short... Alex
I can hear the response now Hes talking bollocks or It doesnt apply if your playing a strat or The bass is the problem, it goes right through me or i need a bigger amp or Mark Knopfler doesnt have this problem
12. I have a 64 which I have had since the late 60s so I know its genuine. Unfortunately its been refinished three times, has lindy Fralins, and non original guard, knobs, and bridge. I curse frequently when I think of what might have been but in the 70s, when it first was refinished, who thought of vintage values, and I probably didnt think I would still be playing now. Good luck with your sale, if its anything like mine, refin or not, its probably a great bass.
13. Any interest at all? before I put to ebay?
14. Any interest ? offers considered before I pass to e bay
15.
Just around 8:00pm, the band came onto the stage and opened with The Boston Rag - slightly obscure choice but I loved it!
One of my favourites, sends shivers up my spine
16.
How thick front to back at the nut and 12th fret is this?
Measured from the crown of the fingerboard to the back of the neck just behind the nut on the fingerboard side 23.1 mm at 12th fret position 24mm [excluding the height of the fret and nut]
17. Dr parts necks seem to come from the same people who supply SX basses which are quite well reviewed. This can be finished with tru stock gun oil or lacquer or WHY
18.
Ah, the Zombies, with original bassist Chris White, they were great. Check out Odessey & Oracle. I suspect though that Chris White may have co-written God Gave etc. Never mind.
I have all their albums, a great band and I prefer the early works God gave was written by russ Ballard although Chris white, [whose bass licks I shamelesly copied and still use] co wrote hold your head up]
19. I bought mine from the states a few years ago and im very happy with it, although the exchange rate was better at the time. About £95 ish inc postage from the states at the moment , plus 22% import duty if you get caught. I was lucky. If money is no object they are very good. but I would be very tempted to talk to the man at Wizard pickups and see what he could offer at considerably less
20. Jim Rodford, also played with the kinks, currently playing with the zombies
21. In the states they are £30 plus £10 shipping http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/bpickguard_pregenuine.htm I cant remember if this is under the duty threshold you would probably get away with it but no guarantees Thomann will cost you about what you have laready been quoted
