1.
Karfler you highlight an important point through your experience. If you use a payal account, you should ALWAYS use it with a credit card and NEVER a bank account The credit card gives you an extra level of protection as your experience highlights - had you used paypal with a bank account it is doubtful whether you would have got your money back
A close escape for me Gareth, my lesson learned.
2. Last summer, after a few folk pestered them on Faecesbook, a short lived band from the early 80's reformed. Troyen. After a while, the original bassist couldn't commit. Fast forward to this Sunday, the 1st gig after 32 years, to launch their 1st CD, mainly old stuff but a couple penned in the last few months. This gig is also a free entry warm up to the first of the few festival gigs they have been asked to do (Brofest3 is the 1st at the end of Feb). Would be great if any from Basschat appeared, The Flying Shuttle, in Bury, on Sunday 1st February at 3pm. For the 1st time in years I'm bricking it. https://www.facebook...151193764899569 Would be great to see, er, anyone
3. How did I miss that bit about the case in post #1. Age I guess Yes, I think we would be chatting if my Limelight went. GLWTS
4.
Well Squire's sound is only one example of a Ric sound, but generally you'll struggle to get that exact sound out of anything after '72, and to be honest you'd be struggling even then. A very light bass with the thinnest neck ever, with a 1/2" toaster and a genuine horseshoe and different value pots (and Chris Squire playing it) is not likely to sound the same as a typical mid '70s or later bass. Different neck instruction, different pickups, pots, weight, you name it. Even my 2 '72s, with essentially the same pickups, pots and weight as each other, don't sound too alike.
Quite right that man!
Seems like this Rick is a winner for you Karl - glad to hear it! I have my sights on the new 4003S I prefer the unbound look and contouring. My main bass now is a '75 Rick 4000 mono with a set as opposed to through neck. It's bloody luverly
I know where you live Ash it's still in my Sat Nag . Always wanted a 4000 In all seriousness the 4004 has relegated my beloved FSR P/J to second and the Limelight to third. Muchess thank 'ees
5.
I briefly owned a 4004 a few years back, in red and gold... I wanted to love it, but it just felt terrible - the neck was this massive shapeless thing. Really wide too. Apparently they have a neck with the same dimensions as the current 4003, which would make for a far more pleasurable experience! My other complaint was that it didn't really have 'that' sound, the sound I want from a rickenbacker. Not really the fault of the bass, I know. I still think they look utterly gorgeous though.
Interesting. Mine is a 2012, wide-ish neck but not as wide as many 4001/3's that I have had. Slim profile back to front. The whole Rick sound to me is a bit of a misnomer. When you put in studio work, effects pedals, strings, technique, amp/amps there is a lot that goes into making that Rick sound. Even with a couple of early 70's Ricks I struggled to get a sound like Squires. Mebbe it's just that I'm sh*te. This 4004 will do anything from JPJ to 'Arry with just tweeks of the rotaries. That'll do me.
6. Congrats Hector, cracking looking bass. I know it's such a small point, but don't those long shanked tuners just look the poodles privates!
7. I have had a few 4001/4003 real and fake over the years. The 4004 which has only been out 20 years!!! is a great bass to play. Non of that great looking but pain in arse ironmongery round the pup, easy intonation, no skin ripped off wrist by sharp edge, bridge pup is perfect thumb rest so CAN BE PLAYED FINGERSTYLE! Do they sound like a Rick? Well, if you use two amps together, lots of effects...................... 8. My current one. Puma 500, 2 x Markbass 210 Traveler P's. Light, VERY simple and fabulous
9. Gig bag included? Collection from [s]a different timezone?[/s] Wiltshire?
10. Thanks Pete. NOT the answers my bank balance wanted to hear, AND a maple board Time for a bit of hard thinking.
11. Lovely. I am assuming this is a Re Issue rather than an original 1975 Fender Jazz?
12. That is very nice indeed. What is the nut width and neck profile please?
13. Reading that email from Bryce several times now (copied in post#19) , I THINK!! WHAT HE MUST MEAN IS THAT the US street price is $999.99, which EQUATES TO £666, at the current exchange rate. So, by the time shipping, VAT, import is added they probably are going to be around £950 on our shores And a bloody long wait! Might just get that Chinese knock off which looks exactly the same, from Ali Express at £300 delivered , even putting on new bridge/pups/tuners.............
14. This one finished a couple of weeks back. He put the BIN UP by £100 a few hours before the end. He then relisted it again, finishing today. A few hours before the end he increased the BIN by £50 Interesting selling technique. 15.
I do however think that the West Ham bass is A stroke of genius. I want one. But as I said to my brother (a huge maiden fan) £950+ for an ornament is a bit rich at the minute (although, would double as a mirror)...and then having to explain to non-muso friends that it's nothing to do with football (I don't follow any team or the sport itself). Sorely tempted though - Steve Harris is possibly the most impressive bass players I've ever heard/seen live.
Andy, look at the transcript of an email I got from Fender, in the Steve Harris thread. Makes the 'Arry even more appealing.
16. Following is an email response to my question to Fender................. Hey Karl, With these having just been released at NAMM this week, it will be a minute before we get any out! Currently, we're in the building process and depending on whether your dealer has already placed a pre order will give you a good idea when they'll reach across the pond. I'd say expect them around April/May! These will have a street price of $999.99 USD or $666.92 (fitting, no?) British Sterling. I was super excited myself when I saw these in R&D - we've been wanting to do this bass for quite a while, just getting the right trademark releases and whatnot is what held it up. Up the irons! Cheers, Bryce Wells Consumer Relations Representative
17.
I appreciate that most global buyers won't care what footy team logo is on it, but surely the market is limited in the UK / EU for that? It would look pretty good without the logo.
I'm a Newcastle supporter, but that bass is just SO iconic for many who have grown old with 'ARRY. I was 20 when I first saw them, 36 years ago.
18. According to the specs I put on the other thread, it is also (thankfully) a slimmer nut width at 41.3mm. Hope that is true when I get mine.
19. The only thing that really concerns me is the damage, G string side, near body end of neck.
20. Yup, from PMT. The 'Arry will be £948 and will be in within 1-2 months. They are asking for pre orders. Well, happy to put down a deposit, but buggered if they are getting £950 then not delivering for 6 months. I would hazard a guess that initial demand for a Steve signature based on the iconic white one is going to be high.
