If anyone knows a better system for buying and selling items from/to complete strangers over the Internet, I'm all ears. Until then the options are PayPal or credit card and the promise of 'some' support if things go base over apex. Or there's good old cash in hand and motorway service stations (or other more glamorous rendezvous of your choosing). Or you can pay by bank transfer and be ever the optimist
The point Ian made that started this thread, was to treat with caution. Reminding people that PAINPal can be dangerous is to be applauded. We know it is convenient but the more people that know it is flawed, the better. And yes, I bloody well do have an axe to grind. But not with you
Just out of interest... What are you hoping to achieve by getting likes from people just for the sake of it? (genuine question - not sarcasm!)
Less nagging from the drummer as he appears to think likes = fame (keyword there is drummer). EDIT. What could possibly go wrong
turn up as in arrive or turn up as in turn the volume up?

Volume.
Doh, I really must learn to read I still stand by my statement regarding band though! -
Liked. In at no 80. Mods, is it possible for us to have a pinned post where any of us could officially [s]beg[/s] ask our peers for likes? I'd love to get our two bands some more likes (as much as anything so the drummer stops bloody pestering me ) but I just thought it was perhaps bordering on associate/small business kinda thing? Cheers, Karl.
Very good advice in this thread. ALWAYS ask the seller to raise an invoice through PayPal and do the deal as a commercial transaction. The PayPal invoice is especially important. It creates an 'official' paper trail (detailing what has been purchased and at what price), which the PayPal support team will use as the basis of any claims should you need to ask them for help. Sellers are billed a % of the sale price for commercial payments (check the PayPal website for details of the fee charged, which varies from country to country). This is the reason why a lot of sellers ask for 'gift' payments, as gifts don't incur a fee for the transaction. Alternatively, it's also not uncommon for sellers to ask buyers to reimburse the transaction fee for commercial payments. This smaller amount can be settled as a 'gift' payment at the discretion of the buyer. Bear in mind that PayPal is set up to help take the risk out of commercial transactions - including private sales - but ONLY if the money is exchanged on commercial terms. Their support team is typically helpful and quick to respond. And their policies are very much in favour of protecting buyers. But... be clear that 'gift' payments aren't covered by their buyer/seller protection policy. So if you exchange money as a gift then good luck and keep your fingers crossed, 'cos that's all the guarantee you're going to get. So yeah. Use PayPal properly and your a$$ is pretty much covered. Cut corners, deal in 'gifts' and it'll be hung out like the back end of a baboon. Just saying
Beg to differ. My issue wasn't on here and perhaps my naivety was part of the problem Bass for sale on Gumtree. The guy wanted payment to his account on the Friday night, collection by me on Saturday. I thought ok as I THOUGHT PAINPAL covered these things. When I got to no 27 of the street stated...... on the Saturday, it didn't exist. It had been flattened. Numbers 1-15 existed, 33-37 existed, 17- 31 on that street had been flattened. I rang the phone number he had given me. Turned out to be an ansaphone for a Sunday Football League. So, no bass, no money, no point of contact. PAINPal said that as it was a payment to a persons account, rather than a payment for specific goods, that they would not cover it. They changed their minds after some more communication however they finally stated that if there was no money in the sellers account they could only " restrict his account privileges". There is enough time passed now that I have passed it to my credit card company, as the PAINPal account I set up to buy this bass was fuelled by my credit card. We shall see. I was reluctant to pay by PAINPal as I was robbed of £600 and a bass by a thieving git in Italy about 5 years ago. The real point is if you want absolute security, you really need to know all of PAINPal's T and C's. And by the way, as THE BUYER, PAINPal charged me £27 for the transaction. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN.

Good luck regardless. My Thumb is obviously not NT however it is very different in that it is a rare factory maple fretboard. Just had one of the band members do that my year on Facebook thing and one of the photos is one of the last gigs I did with my S12V. Sad looking at it. Daft for selling it! Hey ho. Bump
We have been made aware of a number of transactions where goods have been paid for using the Paypal Gift system and the goods are never delivered afterwards. Please be very aware that if you use this payment method there is no way of getting your money back if the deal goes wrong.
Tell me about it! If you use a credit card for your PAINPal, the credit card company MAY be able to help but at a minimum of 30 days after the transaction. As Ian says, don't risk it. Pin this Ian?
Sale only I'm afraid
Shame. I could have been tempted by this, plus £300 to me, in exchange for my Warwick Bleached Blonde Thumb Ltd (if it's the kind of bass that appeals to you). And I would even have come over to Doncaster GLWTS, surprised it's still here to be honest.
Always been curious about these as I lusted after Rics, saving up to buy a 4003 in Jetglo (my dream bass) and then was massively disappointed. Didn't want to take the iron work off as that's part of the look and the less said about the bridge the better (YMMV of course). These basses seem to be the answer to most of my Ric issues. Karl can I come round and stroke it gently (that's the bass btw, not your genitalia).
Obviously very welcome Alain, sometime between Christmas/New Year perhaps.
Welcome to the darkside. They are a professional grade instrument. In the wrong hands, they are useless, in the right hands they can take you to a different level, a bit like a craftsman having a set of precision woodworking tools. You need to be able to use the attention to detail on them to take you beyond the darkside. Like giving a very good driver a slightly better car, a bad driver will crash it and blame the car, the good player will appreciate the improvements over chop and screw together basses . Things like the achievable action with no buzzing and perfect intonation, clank to boom options on one bass all put the tools in your hands to move forward. Now you own one, you will appreciate why they go to the lengths they do to stop people putting them out of business by faking them. (opens can of worms and gets popcorn ready)
Perhaps I'm not the player to get the best out of it, but I'm bloody enjoying trying

I had the jack problem with my Bleached Blonde Thumb. Didn't know until reading this that the issue is hardly unheard of. Proved me right in always having a spare bass though as it clapped out 4 numbers into the first set a few weeks back. New socket installed by the wonderful guy who does all my basses. £20, job sorted. I need to move it on. It's a superb bass but very little interest from buyers or traders . Just don't get it to be honest but I do think the range of both product AND prices doesn't help.
Nice one Karl, look forward to hearing it being given a good thrashing some time!
All the best Tony and see you soon mr!
Looks lovely, and definitely seems more practical than the usual Ric's. The intonation issues on Ric's are almost always due to people not knowing how to set them up. They need to have basically no neck relief and they intonate perfectly well.
I've not really had intonation issues on any Rick, apart from the fact the bridge/saddle arrangement is a fart on to get the intonation correct. This bridge alleviates that fart on.
I've double checked with both the singer and the drummer to make sure it really happened and I've been assured that I did actually have to ask ALL THREE OF THEM TO TURN UP What has happened to the world ?? Surely this messes with the very fabric of space and time ? Bewildered of Wigan
Might actually be because you are a sh*t hot local band with a great reputation and loads of gigs on the books, ya pudden nut -
I hate these things with a passion. There's another (non-music) forum I use which has an entire thread of simpletons patting themselves on the back because they managed nail a stick to some splintery old box they found, & now they want to pretend it's a musical instrument. Aaargh! Jon.
Wasn't that Kay

Thanks folks. AT, yes, it's a Warwick Thumb 2003 Ltd Ed Bleached Blonde Kev, 43 mm at nut, 10" radius

Thanks fella's, I think it's simplicity helps it's looks and it certainly helps it's playability. Really only did this because it may help somebody else scratch a Rickenbacker itch

The sort of is I've had it 3 weeks, 6 gigs but not had the chance to say anything. Got this off Ash, through Gumtree although we were unaware until eventually the penny dropped. So, it's a Rick Jim , but not as we know it. They are a new model by Rick standards, they've only been out 21 years I picked it up on a Thurs night, we had back to back gigs on the Fri/Sat. At the end of the Sat night gig, one of the guitards came over and stated it was the best sounding bass I have used with them in about 200 gigs. Then the other guitard wandered over and said the same. THEN SOMEBODY TOOK THE CHAINS OFF THE DRUMMER and he made it universal acclaim for the sound So, the sound. Well, put the pup selector in the top position, open the tone wide treble and it sounds pretty much like a Rick. Not quite that supposed signature tone but close. The real beauty for me though, is both pups on, tone right down at it's bassiest and it is serious JPJ, Bad Company smoothness. Beautiful. It does not have the tonal extremes the 4001/4003 have. I don't use effects, rarely use a pick but I seem to be able to coax from the aforementioned JPJ to a certain Steve Harris kinda noise, with just the use of pup selector, tone control and a bit more finger. effort. Having said that, the mid section of Am I Evil gets some serious Rick clank going with slightly aggressive pick use. Now, the REAL joy of this thing. IT IS A FINGER PLAYABLE Rick . The bridge pup is in the perfect place for my thumb to rest. All that great looking, PITA ironmongery from the 4001/4003 is gone and the bridge on this is excellent! Nut is wide but the neck is shallow-ish and flat-ish profile. It is beautifully finished and very well put together. Ash also had it set up very well, fast, low action with medium gauge flatwounds. I would guess much more clank available with rounds and a bit of EQ ing. It is also very light at just over 8lbs. I guess if you like the look/sound of a Rick but don't like the iron works, chaffed wrist, intonation issues, action issues and skinned beer gut from the harsh edges, one of these may be worth a look. It was re-iterated last night, if I sell this one, my genitalia will find their way to a bandsaw. In genitalia protection mode I have used nothing else for the last 6 gigs
