Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
karlfer replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Guys, anybody know anything about Yamaha SB-30 basses. There is an absolutely gorgeous looking one for sale relatively close to me and he's asking for offers. I don't know if they go for £100 or £1000, can find bugger all on T'interweb, Found Yamaha catalogues back to 1980 but this series appears to have been long gone by then. He says its 1973, original case and it looks in great nick. It just looks so different and nicey. Any help/advice greatly accepted, cheers, Karl. -

Bremen mailed me with just such a generous offer to pick it up and drop it off when he comes past in a fortnight. He's a star. Meanwhile, I have just got lucky and agreed a deal on a Schroeder 410BMF, so no punts on anything for several months now . Aye, right

There's a thread asking what you would do if you won £148 million. This would be part of my answer. Stunning.
and what I find odd is how it affects some models and not others. Fender stick up the prices and the secondhand prices on the USA models more or less stay the same, whereas secondhand mexican models shoot up from £200-300 to £400+ asking prices. Theres quite a nice looking MIM jazz for sale on here at the moment- and nice bass I would think it is- but a MIJ jazz is a fair bit cheaper! In other places people ask more for the japanese one than a secondhand USA..... mad! warwicks either are still dirt cheap, or at fairly pricy prices- always with the "would cost over £3500 new!!!"
Yup, it really is mad, but ultimately it's down to the same old, if it's what somebody is after and they have the loot................ Or alternatively, ask a daft price but don't be surprised if it doesn't sell.

Bought this as a stopgap whilst awaiting a Schroeder 410L coming up, as I want 10 inch speakers. Still waiting, however I have got a chance at something as high quality as the Schroeder, neo, with 10 inchers (steady ). So, it's in good nick apart from, 1. Scuffed corner pieces. 2. Previous owner had 2 strips of gaffer tape across the top, removal meant there are lines of residue left. I guess warm water, soap and elbow grease will remove the lines. I MAY! get round to it. 3. Handles slightly scuffed. What is it like? Stupidly light and powerful. Played a gig at the Station in Lytham. A bass chatter was right at the back 30 yards away and told me he could still feel the bass through the floor (cheers Tony). 800 watts, 4 ohms, hopefully link to spec Schroeder "Superior Sound" Cabinets Hopefully my usual crap photos. Brand new Roqsolid cover included. £375 collected from Wigan, £400 couriered to you after funds clear. Bank transfer, cleared cheque, no PAINPal sorry and UK only. Very welcome to come and try it. This may not be up for very long if the other goes, Cheers, Karl.

Singers man!!! WTF is WRONG with these people??
karlfer replied to Grassie's topic in General Discussion
I became an actor for a while - still am to a lesser extent. I figured that if I played the role of a confident singer I might get by long enough to start building up that confidence for real. It worked. As I got more confident I began to attack microphones rather than shy from them. That made me sound better - sounding better made me that little bit more confident , and so it went on. These days I don't think of myself as a great singer , more of a workmanlike one. A craftsman rather than an artist. I also appreciate why singing bass players I admired - such as Phil Lynott and to a lesser extent Geddy Lee (not lesser on playing ability) - sang lines which might appear to be a bit un-natural timing wise. It's so they can fit them with playing the bass line. I do that all the time. I don't think my playing has suffered. I think it's improved. When singing - I have a greater sense of the song in terms of it being a melody and lyrics , and therefore a better sense of how best to suport that with my bass playing. I fill the gaps better than I used to and don't interupt like I had a tendancy to do. Best of all - it stops you looking at your fcuking hands !!!! You become more of an entertainer - more in touch with the williams - less likely to hide halfway behind the drums then complain later that you're contribution isn't recognised !! Be honest - how many of us have done that?!
Yeah, I've seen you and Rod, shrinking violets the pair of you Sell me the Tele wise one -
Yup it's all very interesting. The one that keeps staggering me is the Marcus Millers. They are over £1000 new now, partially due to VAT increase couple of years back, which adds cost from raw materials up wards. Exchange rate between sterling and Yen has had an impact, There are far fewer basses from Japan advertised on FEEBay now, because they have become prohibitively expensive. Meanwhile back at Marcus. Mr/Mrs/Ms Bloggs who bought there Marcus 8 years ago brand new at £400, now want £700/£900 for it because a new ones a grand. Then they wonder why their is little interest. Same can be said with Aerodynes, anybody paying £700 for them is frankly bonkers. You can have my White USA P for £650. Less than a Miller or Aerodyne? Ho hum!

Response from Fender was quick, but just the "take it along to your local authorised dealer, try fret dress before more expensive options". Thanks a bunch Fender, from a long time user and buyer. Don't try too hard will you. So, bollocks to local Fender dealer, now in the excellent hands of Ritchie Tomson, Tomson Guitars, of Wigan. Superb custom maker, luthier and all round nice guy. Oh, and 100% trustworthy. Watch this space. Or not. Karl.
