Oh my God!

I have my eye on something specific on here. There has been considerable interest in this jazz, but only a couple of firm exchanges, neither of which were quite right for me. My jazz is now in Richard Tomson's of Wigan, getting a set up, and the dis-lodged wire soldered back. I get it back on Thurs.(please check his reputation on the 'net) I am prepared to drop the price of this bass to £1400, cash on collection, if the deal is completed before noon on Saturday 9th Jan. If I haven't completed the sale by then, it will certainly be back up to £1500, but will most likely be withdrawn and most likely I will put my Geddy up for sale. I really can't afford the luxury of 3 jazzes. Many thanks for looking, Cheers, Karl.

1. To get an interpreter for the rest of the band I recently joined (I'm 20 years older the them). 2. To stop widdling Jaco bits in the gap between songs in rehersals (thats for the g***arist to do) 3. To get the band from 40 minute support slots to something where you can work a real sweat up. 4. To bring about world peace and democracy for the Wigan Unpopular Front. 5. To eat a beaver and save a tree.

Ebay clearout to end all Ebay clearouts....
karlfer replied to wateroftyne's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Having just looked at that lot, I am relieved that I can, in all good conscience, ask £1500 for my 74/75. However; That White 1970 re-fin with Rosewood and Pearl blocks has brought about a "What will I get for the car?" moment. -
I would'nt know much, but that price is not too far off the cost of a new 75 reissue, so the price must be pretty damn good i think! Good luck selling it!!
Thanks aznbass (now got some time to thank you). And a damn fine New Year to you and everybody. Looked on ebay today, '75, US re-issue £1549. As these are still available, I guess they would depreciate over the 1st few years. That series appear to be the 3 bolt neck, unlike my 4 bolt, so I guess that was the 1st year jazzes had 3 bolt? Couple of years back when I was looking for a gigging replacement for this jazz, I tried a Japanese '75 re-issue and remember thinking it was nice, but about the same weight as a Ford Focus, therefore not for me. Cheers, Karl.

E-Bay Horror Stories (Or humourous Ones!)
karlfer replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
Whats wrong with that one? Anything that can be done to get round the monopolistic stranglehold ebay have over pretty much the entire used market is a good thing in my book, and if someone comes over tonight and pays me 400 quid for the bass/amp/whatever thats on ebastard for 450, I'll take it, as cash in hand face to face is safer than any amount of ebay "seller protection" especially if the buyer lives within comfortable driving distance, and I don't have to pay ebay and paypal for the privilege of being systematically ripped off when their "seller protection" is a total farce to begin with. I loathe and detest the way ebay treat honest sellers, and avoid them wherever possible. Call me old fashioned, but don't we all prefer the good old "service station with bundles of cash" method on this here forum?
Couldn't have put it better! The most infuriating thing is since ebay bought paypal, I have to offer paypal. I sold a bass on it lasy year for £440 and it ended up costing me £70 for the pleasure. BLOODY BANDITS. -
Hi guys. Spotted on ebay, Kent based Rn R band with Euro stuff lined up. No good to me in Wigan sadly, but would be good if one of our guys got it! Dont ask me to post link as wouldn't know where to start, but if you go e bay, categ, guitars, categ, bass then search through 1500 listings you'll find it. Actually, think it will come up if you search under Fender in basses. Good luck folks.
Good spot Karl - I maintain that the only connection these have with Tokai is in the minds of people trying to sell them. Season's greeting to you too - I shall be spending Hogmanay hiding somewhere, likely adopting the foetal position. J.
Please do not adopt the foetal position on Princes St, at the bells. Stay safely at home and watch Ali and Phil! Too much false bonhomie can kill!

Jimmy Moon for the paint job. Perhaps he could fret that, er (fret) board for you? Get that done first and then when budget allows get the paint done. Guess he will still be on the South Side. Bit out of touch with Scotland having left 3 years ago. Good luck and all the best, Karl.

Many thanks for the input fellas. Sorry, I didn't mean to seem impatient, I was just concerned the advert (and price) was putting people off. Trying to be as honest as poss, we have all seen dodgy descriptions and dodgier looking basses. Thanks again Lozbass ( I can't remember if it's Lawrence or Laurence and I know I raise my eyes to the sky when I get Carl and not Karl!). Cheers, Karl.
I really wish someone would show me the badge on these "Tokais". J.
Hiya Jon and a merry Christmas (brace yourself for Hogmanay). Ref, Rockinbetter. I am sure you will have come across this, but JSD's Guitar Shack in Canada offer a Dillions Rockinbetter bass guitar, made in Korea, which bears a striking resemblance to the alleged/anecdotal Tokai. I am sure you have come across that, but, just in case............... All the best, Karl.
At Xmas time it can be easy to become separated from your bass. Perhaps you are staying with family, or your spouse's family? Perhaps your practice room now has an elderly aunt, mother-in-law, or your brother's entire family sleeping in it? You need a survival kit. A small package which can be discreetly stored so as to not alert too much suspicion. Here is one I made earlier: On the other hand you could just take all your basses, a 4x10 and blast them out of the house for an hour or two! Merry Xmas
Lovely idea, but gotta be 4x10 +1x15, min 300w amp.

OK, no intention of bumping this for several days, however, 164 views and no comments in 1 day rings alarm bells that people are getting to price and thinking, "You have ta be jokin' bonny lad". I would like to explain my thinking, for what it's worth. 1. Many 70's basses have been messed with. This has only been slightly messed with, apart from the paint having been stripped.(Big issue but it was done over 20 years ago). 2. Good 70's basses, bad 70's basses. This is a peach in my opinion. 3. As time goes by genuine 70's basses will become fewer and further between. 4. Unlikely to become less valuable over the coming years. 5. Some 70's basses on ebay seem a bit questionable, yet still bring higher prices than I am looking for. I could keep it as an "investment" but to be brutally honest it is money sat there that could be used elsewhere. (A Rick for starters!) If it doesn't go on here, or later on the bay, I will sell one of my 2 modern jazzes (Geddy and Highway 1), and use this as back up, but leave it in the case, next to me, at gigs. Cheers, Karl.
To be fair... you're probably paying for someone's time to type your address into the computer and print the label etc. etc. rather than the actual postage.
Hi thepurpleblob and a merry Christmas. I guess I was a bit less than impressed when they didn't bother to reply. My main point with them was that other string retailers were charging £1.50 to £2.50 to send strings. They wanted £6.99. The price of the relevant strings only varied by about £2 between 3 retailers. To me, same strings costing a total of £4 less delivered meant that Dolphin were uncompetetive. I guess all 3 retailers must have similar costs to invoice, pack and send out. Back of my mind, it's probably that decent bass strings (always subjective) are expensive, and I want what I consider to be the best all round deal, and I want to be treated like I try to treat everybody. With respect. All the best, Karl.

Hi folks. Had this Jazz over 20 years. Not used live for last 5, as scared of drunks falling on it.Will never gig it again, so finally decided to stop wasting it. Serial number dates it to 74, pots to 75. Bad bits. (Please bear in mind, whilst I've had it 20 years, there is 15 years of it's history prior to that) It's been stripped over 20 years ago. Nut is not original. Don't think scratchplate is original (think it should have been white). Frets are worn. It will need a re-fret at some time in the future. Fag burns, hairline splits in neck (you cant feel them, and they have been there a very long time with no change). Good bits. Very light. Very fast. Sounds fantastic (subjective) Was my main bass for 15 years of gigging. There is some discussion on this bass on the forum Bass Guitars, under the topic "74 Jazz identification issues". Sorry, I have no idea how to post a link. Perhaps the most important comment is by Lozbass. Who should be interested in this? Session musician or somebody who does gigs where the audience isn't at their feet! My feedback on ebay can be checked as karl5066. Just set up by Richard Tomson, luthier, Wigan (check him on internet). Neck/truss rod fine. Apologies for photos as I do not have a digital camera. I think I can provide an attachment of the bass live, 5 years ago, but I think this may need to go to a private email address as I couldn't do that to a bass chat address last time. If interested, £1500 cash, collected. I think it is worth that. If Bass Chatters don't agree, sorry, but it's my valuation that counts. If it doesn't go here, or later on evil bay, then it doesn't go. I will meet free of charge up to 50 miles radius of WIGAN. Only trade I would be interested in is good condition, fairly recent Rick 4003 or 4004. Right, lets see if I can do the photo's bit. Cheers, Karl.

The drummers cymbals will thank you for headless!

On the bah humbug side, I recently emailed Dolphin to confirm that a set of strings from them to me (in Wigan, i.e.mainland UK, no smarty comments please) would cost £6.99 for postage. I thought that about £4.99 too high. I never received a reply. I haven't ordered them.

"This bass isn't designed to have a low action"
karlfer replied to Mokl's topic in General Discussion
The road to Hell and good intentions eh? With your attitude I wish you lived close to me Mokl, cos you'd be getting my basses to sort! Well done for trying. The other cliche is leading horse to water, can't make it drink. The burk deserves a crap bass! My pops always used to say "don't enter into a battle of wits with an un-armed opponent". Have a good Christmas mate, Cheers, Karl. -

Hells bells lads, I'd only just gone for a cuppa. Many thanks Happy Jack and Bass Doc, I'm not crying quite as much now! Wonderful how helpful you guys are. Lozbass I owe you a great debt for pointing this site out to me when you bought my ex Sei, and I hope you still love her! Thanks for the kind words on the jazz, much better from you than me. Bet you are sat in watching the wonderful white stuff in Manc? Again thanks fellas, I don't want to put something up for sale that isn't what it seems. There are a few on ebay that do that for us! -
Hi folks and help please. I have had a '74 jazz for over 20 years, identified by serial number. The plan has become to sell it, as considering it valuable, it has not been gigged for 5 years, so is being wasted. I intended to take her to Richard Tomson in Wigan for a neck check, full set up, prior to selling in New Year. This morning, because of what I have learned on this fabulous site, I started to strip her down as I now know how to identify neck/body stamps. The 1st horror is that the neck pocket seems to show it is stripped from sunburst, o.k. at least 20 years ago, but it's happened, nowt to be done. The neck pocket seems to have an "f" and a circle with INC...31....1 in the different sections of the circle. Second horror no date stamp on end of neck. The neck has a word starting ARM..., and a small circular stamp that is unreadable. Third horror, nothing really readable in pocket. I already knew the nut was obiously a replacement and I think the scratchplate is as well, as there is a slight gap between that and the control panel(not removed plate as screws are bit rusty.. The frets are well worn and the bass has lots of "character" scuffs, marks etc. Only thing I have had done is occasional service/string change. It is also the lightest, fastest jazz I have ever had, hence why I have owned and played it for so long. The pots have the following characters(as best as my eyes allow!). 032367 250K-A 137753 I am now about to attempt to upload some camera phone stuff, I can also email photo's I think. As it appears it's not what I thought, I will just get it serviced and set up, and enjoy playing it, due to not being scared by it's previously percieved value. Many thanks for any help, clues, opinions you can give, Cheers, Karl.
