1. Hello there, just wondered, what speaker is in it, and what wattage is the combo? Cheers, Karl.
2.
Nope, you lost me there. Your amp will not over-power your cab and damage it, that's all I mean.
Sorry Brave Sir Robin, I was being humourous (allegedly), little to do with the thread. Thought you had taken your nom de guerre from Python's Holy Grail. Quote "He chickened out and he buggered off, Brave Brave Sir Robin". Shall now crawl back into dark corner.
3.
hmm what happened to my reply... The amp is rated 200 watts @ 8 ohms, so you'll have plenty of headroom to spare, at least the cabinet will not have a problem.
Perhaps it chickened out and it buggered off. know what I mean, say no more.
4.
If we're going down the route of shameless plugs There's my Trace V Type up for grabs. 250W loud as you like, will cut through like a cutty thing and will also drive larger cabs if you so wish. Ask Merton, it was his before I got it. I've not used it in a live situation but he has extensively and says it was amazing. Edited to add link http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=57962
Plugs are great. Only problem is I need to sell my old Shaftesbury first, to get to the £400 bracket. It goes on ebay next Tues night. V TYPE very tempting, I bought one new not long after they came out. Cost just under a grand (in financially happier times!), and I know it was superb. Even better with a Marshall 4 x 12 under it. I need to see what is available after I sell the Shafty, but all advice and plugs gratefully recieved. Many thanks all.
5.
Or even worse you could have bought a lotus elan
LOTUS L oads O f T rouble U sually S erious. Thanks about the Marshall, but not quite as many watts as I was looking for. Nice tip re Hartkes, keep 'em coming fellas.
6. Can't beat a good shameless plug, but a bit too much for me Warwickhunt. Bit complex for a thick old git, but nice to see a reference to broon dog. Darlington born Toon supporter exiled to Scotland then Wigan. Remember me dad buying an Austin All- aggro. Only BL could come up with a Square steering wheel. Keeping an eye on the kit on Bass Chat. There was a great looking Ashdown set up going at Stockport, but it was the MAG series which I have heard can be unreliable. Keep it coming folks, the more I know, the less chance of me making an expensive balls up.
7. Hi folks. just for info to the half dozen who showed interest but.... A. Need to sell x 1st. B. Get paid end of month. This unusual, cool?, old and nice sounding bass will be going on e.bay next Tues, 1st September. (Sorry, not concentrating, listening to Queen 11 for first time in years. Forgotten just how good they were in the early years)
8. Thanks lads. Looking at the rigs you 2 have, I am going to hide in a dark cupboard. My previous big rig was for use with a successful blues band in Scotland that did some big gigs. Past the rock star stage 25 years ago. Had some good times and interesting tours, but won't need a big rig now. Budget is only going to be a lowly £350/£400, just a few local gigs per annum, mainly for my pleasure. Was looking at a McGregor on ebay, starting price £85, quite close to me. Seem to remember they were well thought of in the 80's. Also looking at GK,Backline 600 on ebay, as well as Ampeg 1x15, 220 watt. Will have a good look through BC ads as well. Again, many thanks lads, now, off to an interview for a crap job, but needs must. Cheers, Karl.
9. Hi folks. After a 4 year lay off, I am going for a band again. My last rig was bought a decade ago, sold 4 years ago.ABM 300 head, Marshall 4x10, Marshall 1x15. Dont want to lug that lot around,(cant afford that lot now) will compromise with sound, looking at probably 1x15 combo, possibly 2 x10. Started looking and GK/Ampeg/Hartke/ etc that I have looked at are all made in China. Anybody using any of the Chinese stuff? All input/comments/experiences gratefully recieved. Cheers, Karl
10. Found couple of bits on net, one Italian, one Japanese. Now the attempt to post them...... Also been informed has zero fret. I never noticed. Thanks Andrew. Nope, I aren't allowed to upload that kind of file apparently. Anyone interested I will attempt to send as email attach. Cheers, Karl.
11.
Basschat should only stop you sending more than PM a minute, so you might just want to give it ago again now. Cheers
Merky buckets (thats French). I live and learn (slowly) with all this new fangled technology. One day I may even update my Steam Van. Seriously though tayste_2000, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Cheers, Karl.
12.
I you still want to sell I'll take it for 150 incl post to huddersfield area.
Hello Andrew, hope you see this. Bass chat won't let me send another PM until tomorrow? If you do see this, please give me a call on 01942 512194 at about 8pm tonight, Tues 18th. I will play it over the phone and it will give you some idea. If you dont like what you hear, nothing lost and no offense taken. Hope you see this, Cheers, Karl.
13.
What sort os trades you interested in?? Amps, basses, other?
Hello Richardrickenbacker. Really looking for a sale. Because of the low price I am looking to sell at, the only trade I would really be keen on is a Squire Classic Vibe Jazz, the white one with tortoiseshell 'plate. Bit surprised at lack of interest to be honest, only couple of trade offers. Shaftesbury weren't a poor brand, and lots of 35+ year old basses are bringing more than this, but I will see what ebay brings (when I have braced myself for that horror) What I need is a 20 something deciding this bass would look cool on myspace, youtube. Many thanks for your enquiry, Cheers, Karl.
14. Here we go with the bumps. There will only be a couple before evil bay, so please save me somebody.
15. Thanks for that folks. I have seen there add all over, but I haven't applied as I get the impression it would be a case of "get out coffin -dodger". Its always difficult when you move to a new area. I did see one add for "Critical Mass" who actually said age/sex irrelevant, but needless to say I can't remember where I saw it. Must be my age!
16. Hello, anybody there? I moved to Wigan from Scotland a while back, now in position to get started again. Own gear/transport. Haved played in varying bands, rock, metal, blues, cover, club, tribute but happy to play anything except slap (bass is a stringed instrument, not percussion IMO). Have written quite a few songs over the years, last 2 bands have however been blues, so not much writing there. The bad news is I am 50, however I have been pig ugly and hidden behind cabs since 15, so come on folks, I know nobody around Wigan, give me a shot. Cheers, Karl.
17. Sorry Skankdelvar, that photo always cracks me up. Are you positive you aren't related to Satan-the Sister-in-law?
18. Thanks for all the interest folks, especially Bassassin who has been blindingly helpful with this. I really do hope I can sell her here, appreciating ebay gives service/big market, it's the micky taking fees/monopoly/cant do this/must do that/ that bugs me. Mr Whippet, the real reason I bought this was my 2nd ever bass was one of these (1st was a £12 Futurama, real plank with strings) , bought for £52 in 1974(the payment from half a dozen North East club gigs at 16). Shand -a -Lang.Surprised I made 17. Unfortunately in the intervening 35 years my fingers have echoed the growth of the rest of me, mainly sideways and outwards. Thats a cracking picture which will probably bring some wry smiles from us guys in our, err, prime. Now, where is my Sanatogen. Happy days.
19. Hello all. Bought this Shaftesbury on evil bay few months back. Long story, its medium scale, my fingers aren't. It's sat there doing nowt. Was advertised as Japanese by long term previous owner, although no serial number/made in ..... anywhere, no clues under scratchplate, pots (except B500?) pick ups, etc. Could actually be Italian EKO made in mid sixties, more likely Japanese. Anyway its old. Bad bits, some finish been badly re-done,leaving tiny spots of black spray around repairs.Tried to show on photos. Neck has been re-glued at some time(very solidly) but excess glue wasn't removed. Screw missing from 1 tuner cover, screw missing from Shaftesbury logo. Good bits. it's light and looks wonderful(subjective!) from more than 2 feet away. All electrics work fine, sound is wooden with little modern attack, as would be expected, but within her scope she sounds really nice. Neck straight, action roughly 2mm at 1st fret,6mm at 22nd, not as low as your best Jazz, but lower than many semi-acoustics. If nobody wants her here, she will go on * bay at £180 reserve plus deliv. Any BC'er wanting her, it's £160 plus deliv, but I will meet up to 40 miles from Wigan at no charge. Please have pity and dont make me go to * bay! I think the price I am asking is fair, losing me a touch, considering a Hondo 11 bolt neck 4*** copy went for £275 recently? Sorry, only trade I would consider would be Squire Jazz Classic Vibe (the white/tortie fella) Thanks folks, Karl.
20. Thanks once again J, a man amongst men. Right, here we go, brace yourself Mabel. Like I said, crap photos, including the obvious "Turn it down we have had complaints from Hurworth (8 miles via Crow)". Also on one of the black and white ones we were supporting the King Crabs. Bassist/vocals by a big fella called Jimmy Nail. Wonder what happened to him?
21.
Quite tricky, this - there isn't much info out there about these but from seeing them come up on Ebay (they're not too uncommon) there were definitely both Japanese and Italian versions of the same thing sold under the Shaftesbury brand. The set-neck & style of tuners on yours makes me inclined to think it's Italian, and this being the case it's pretty early, possibly even late 60s - but with no catalogues to cross-reference I'm just guessing! Anyway, Shaftesbury guitars initially seemed to be Italian-made copies (as well as Ricks I've seen thinline Tele guitars & 50s-style P basses) and UK-made (Ned Callan) originals but by the mid 70s they pretty much all seemed to be decent-quality MIJ copies, predominantly Matsumoku. That's just the history as far as I can make it out - I don't think the basses like yours were Matsumokus but the Japanese ones might represent some sort of transitional period in the Shafty range. I've seen MIJ Shafty P-basses too, like the Italian ones. Eko definitely supplied Shaftesbury acoustics & electrics so I'd be inclined to think the Rick "copies" (there never was a real Rick 330 bass) came from the same place There's some info about Shaftesbury/Eko on the Fetishguitars site but they've changed it a bit recently and the English version of this page has conveniently vanished! Jon.
Thanks once again Jon. I looked on the fetish sight, but could not find the bass in their catalogues (dating from about 64 to mid 80's). I really just want to as honest as I can be when I advertise it, so I will need to think carefully about what I say. I do remember seeing somewhere the Italian version had a narrow tailpiece and one piece pick guard , but I am b******d if I can remember where I saw that. Reality is I will be as honest as I can , but going out at £160 to BC'ers and £180 reserve on ebay, I am not going to worry into an early grave! Again Jon, many thanks, you have helped a lot of people with your knowledge sharing. Cheers, Karl.
22. Now I've remembered why I looked here the other night. Hopefully Bassassin can be his usual copy Rickapedia. Hopefully these photos will attach, (only poor camera phone I'm afraid) she will be going on sale soon. I bought this on ebay a couple of months back and unsurprisingly things weren't quite what they seem. The biggest problem is that it is medium scale and my fingers are long scale (and actually pretty fat scale, slightly resembling the centres of American Hot dogs). Anyway,I would like to describe as accurately as possible, so J, if youv'e got your ears on, any info gratefully accepted. Condition rather quite good except for some poor attempts at respraying(only visible close up). Neck has been re-glued at some stage, excess glue has not been removed, but other than that a good job. There are no model/serial number, or "Made in...." written on it. It was advertised as made in Japan. I cannot find it in any EKO catalogue, and I seem to remember reading somewhere that even Ibanez didn't start serial numbers until 1975. This is a good sounding, good condition, very light bass, that my fingers are too big for. Any help from anybody to help describe as accurately as possible would be gratefully accepted. Confused of Wigan.
23.
You don't see many of them. Or Ebay dealers who can't spell "Ibanez"!! Way to get the hits! J.
OK, I spent several nights trying to get a crap old picture onto here, then several nights in a psychiatric establishment to stop the screaming. Got to tell you bassassin, I love your sub-title, even though Attila the Hen (wife) did not take too kindly to being called it. She even paused when blow torching the toast.
24.
Sorry you missed it! Apologies if you were one of the people I didn't reply to, I set a threshold price and the many offers below that just didn't get a reply due to lack of time. If it makes you feel any better, there's a Precision that I am completely in love with, but sooo reluctantly walked away from, as the story behind it didn't add up, even though it sure was a cracking bass. GUTTED! Hey ho...plenty more fish in the sea, good luck in your quest!
Hi and thanks. Despite being bass chatter for couple of months, 1st I saw of it was Sunday night on evil bay. E mailed straight away, just asking if could meet on M25 if I was the lucky winner. I guess I was a couple of hours too late! Anyway, £450 plus carrage would have been in budget due to a recent lucky break. If the new owner doesn't get on with it, could you let me know (now, where's the fingers on my voodoo doll of the new owner?). Thanks again, Karl.
25. B****R IT. I got all excited, recognising it from just missing out on evil bay. My little eyes opened, my dicky ticker went bumpity bump, then it eventually sunk in it was still sold. NURSEY! Meds please.
