1.
Picked one of these up on Saturday.....damn fine bass. Any question ask away.
Oh man, that '99 Hot Rod, why did I ever sell mine
  2. On Fri night this was put on hold for a member. He changed his mind yesterday. This morning it was put on hold for another member, who also changed his mind. Last Wed a certain tribute bass was put on hold for somebody on Facebook. He appears to have gone awol. Even my patience is wearing thin. Karl.
  3.
Congrats! Jazz with P neck is my flavour. Unfortunately I'm still looking for the perfect combination of body and neck. My first bass, a Squier affinity jazz currently has a warmoth P neck on it but there is a huge gap between it and the body. I've had a squier P neck on it as well but the truss rod went on that. It's been on my list for about 10 years to get a nice Fender jazz and find a direct replacement P neck but there is always something in the way! Needless to say, I am incredibly jealous! Enjoy the bass, it looks stunning!
The Squiers are a slightly different neck pocket I think. Might be worth keeping an eye out for a cheap Mex jazz, the Warmoth should fit much more accurately. Then sell the Mex neck to recoup some funds.
  4.
A good time to ask as I'm researching P basses too! I know you've had a 62RI with a 42mm nut. I have one here that might go for the chop. I see the '63 & '58 P's are as you say, 7.25 on 44mm. The two basses on my radar are: Steve Harris P. 7.25" 41mm and the Mike Dirnt 9.5" at 40mm. The only thing is that both of these have fat necks that you might not like but I love the idea despite not having tried them myself! Oh wait! 70's P basses. The Nate Mendel is a 7.25 with a 40mm nut. - it's apparently based on his own 71 (??) P bass. - I'm also wondering if my rather awesome 'law-suit' is the same spec, but have to say, is a better bass than the Nate I played recently!
Dood, you might want to revisit the 'Arry nut width spec fella
  5. It's already been removed once!
  6. I had one of these Mex Geddy's briefly (another long story ) and mine was as good as the Japanese ones I'd had. It was also lighter than any of the Japanese ones I'd had! The S1 switching seems to be a LOT more use on a jazz than on a Precision. Nice bass
  7.
Coming up here takin' our basses!!!
I did live in Bannockburn for 13 years. English Unpopular Front
Lovely looking bass - I'm being strangely drawn back to Fenders..... I'm glad this went or I may have crumbled...
Just get a P Martyn and get yer 'Arry on
Ahhhh Yes! - I reviewed one for an upcoming issue of GI Mag. I loved it but would have to take the covers off it came with. Great tone and if I had the spare cash.....
Look forward to the review dood. Yes, covers look glorious but need removing for most players. All further PM's replied to. Cheers, Karl.
  8.
...you seem to change basses more often than I change my socks. GLWTS!
Correct and thank you
Drooooooooooooooooool Yeah a great big neck! Yum!
Not '51/54 or Attitude baseball, but a bit chunkier than most dood
Who took the pics for you? If you did your skillz are gettin' real good matey Nice looking bass Karl, light too.
A lot of practice of late Tom
Just PMd you Karl.
Many thanks Alex, replied

  10. CASH PRICE £850 COLLECTED WIGAN, £900 INC UK INSURED COURIER. One of these fellas. https://www.gak.co.u...CFQYSGwodioMP6w Got this last week at a great price (£820 but I drove to Scotland to collect). Unlike the AV 57 RI and the Road Worn 50's , this does not have a shallow back to front neck. GUTTED Not baseball bat D Tele type profile, but certainly a deeper C than the series before. By my eyes (NO guarantee ) 22 mm deep from board to back of neck at 1st fret, and 26 mm from board to back of neck at 12th fret. As a pose to a more normal reading of around 20 and 23 respectively. So fretting is hurting my hand a bit. ISSUES. 3 nasty dint's as per photos, plus some " certain light" surface scuffing. Both case locks are buggered, but it can be closed on the middle hasp thing. One screw missing from chrome pick up cover. GOOD BITS. Lacquered scratchplate. Sounds wonderful. 8 LBS ! Feedback linked below. Many thanks for looking, cheers, Karl. 11. In fairness Chris, you are much more experienced with Ricks than I am, but, for me, the original core Rick sound was fingerstyle with flats. In my world, the 1st one I noticed to expand on that was Chris Squires, although I know he was only one of many experimenting. As I understand it, he used a guitar amp for "treble" pup, bass amp for "bass" pup. He really took it a long way from the core sound. Yet many folk call his sound The Rick Sound. Even the difference between pick and fingers is massive. And whats the matter with ergonomics? Don't you like wrist slashing binding and most of the chromework off a Cadillac Eldorado
  12.
That's the truth of it, there's tricks to getting one Ric sound for sure, for example Squire's, Maccas etc, but to get all of them, which all Rics can do because despite what people say, they are extremely versatile instruments, you'll need a Ric. IME there is no instrument that has quite such a unique set of tonal characteristics.
Exactly Chris They are daft versatile, which is why I always chuckle when I hear the phrase "Rick sound".
  13. I love all this "Rick sound " stuff. Who's? Geddy, Squire, Lemmy, Entwistle, Burton, McCartney? They all use different amps, cabs, live effects, studio effects, strings, techiques etc. Live sound, throw an (undoubtedly excellent) engineer in to the mix ( ) I can get most P's to do a passable Rick sound IF SUCH A THING really exists.
  14.
Calling Karlfer!
If it had come up last week Ash If I sold my American Vintage 58 Precision I'd be on this in a heartbeat, it's perfect
  15. I had one briefly (long story) and was very impressed, great workhorse bass at any price really.
  16. The "S" versions are quite hard to find. They are going to be even harder as the importer of Rockinbetter has been told to "cease and desist". He's flogged his last remaining stock to several retailers in the UK, at cut prices. Presumably to get as much back as he can, quickly. Selector switch and jack socket are both just standard Switchcraft on mine, however if you have the two sockets on your bass, just ask on the FB page. Somebody will help you. On Facebook, you will see some little boxes at the top of the page. Hit the "start conversation" button and carry on. Don't be afraid of asking dumb questions, everybody does . Enjoy.
  17.
Somewhere - - within these pages, I thought - - a set of pickups was mentioned that was a lot cheaper than the Seymour Duncans, and which performed very well. Anyone able to tell which pickups these may have been? I trawled the thread without finding them myself. IMS they were 150 quid or Mercan bucks per set. The point here is my Rockinbetter wants two new pickups for its birthday, and as a proud dad, I wish to oblige. Though I seem to remember one the the original pickups in the Rockinbetter does not need being exchanged, and at any rate, I suppose the bridge pup placement on the Rockinbetter would ruin it for even an original Rickenbacker bridge pickup? If anyone has any advice, it's received with gratitude. On another note, the pickup switch doesn't work or one of the pickups doesn't. Any experience about this as to Rockinbetters? Would it often be a case of dismantling the switch and cleansing it, or would one normally exchange it? Or do experiences with Rockinbetters teach us that it's normally the pickup itself that is faulty? I can of course investigate everything, but a quick heads up might save me some time by starting with the most common source of error. Thanks for any info!
I had the selector switch issue with my Rockinbetter 4003s tribute. Replaced it with Switchcraft. Also jack socket replaced with Switchcraft. Personally, I find the "s" version of tributes and the real thing much easier to play fingerstyle. The Rockinbetter has a much more functional bridge than the real thing though! The contoured top is so much more forgiving on the wrist, than the binding, sharp slab top. The real 4004C11 is even easier for fingerstyle . Kevin is yet another amazing ambassador for this wonderful forum. He has just bought an amp from me. Think he'd paid before I said yes Extremely easy deal, great comms and an easy going pleasure throughout. Fully recommended, don't hesitate. Thanks for everything Kevin, I hope you really enjoy that wonderful amp, cheers, Karl.
  20. Over 6.5 years to be precise Mark, Jan 2010. I gigged this wonderful bass for 17 years. Wish I could afford to buy her back, but sadly that won't happen at the moment. Somebody will be getting the best bass I've ever had.
  21.
The approved method is actually to attach one end of a piece of string to your belt and then tie the other end to a live haddock which should then be lowered down the inside of your trouser leg to just below the knee. As the haddock flaps about it will naturally cause your trousers to also flap sympathetically. To accurately reproduce the specific trouser flap of an all tube amp through a fridge, this should ideally be an organically reared, line caught haddock (obviously).
Don't be ridiculous. You can only use haddock at seaside gigs. You don't get sea air in Wigan. The boys in the know round here use imported Rainbows
  22. Chancing bullsh*tt*r Dunc. The sort who should be taken round the back of the bike sheds and given a slapping with a Morris starter handle
  23. A "you have mail" kinda bump.
  24.
Drummer turns up with an electronic kit... I'm out!
Trust me, It's been moved to his home practice only
