1.
it's not just down to you, your drummer needs to be addressing it to.

Maybe the guitarist is playing too much when he is not soloing and so losing too much when he drops it.
I've been thinking a bit about this thread since my last post and I think it *may* be more than this. A lot of soloing in the rock 'n' roll era involves thickening up the guitar with double stops or chord based soloing. It's easy for us as bass players to think we are the ones who are at fault but I wonder if your guy is doing a lot of single note soloing? Listen to Eddie Cochran or Buddy Holly - it's very heavily based around not just playing single notes and that thickens the sound. Just thinking about your playing from what you've said. In terms of the bass, jazzes are slightly better for cutting through the mix and playing more melody based basslines. A P-bass would thicken up the sound. And I assume you are using flatwounds, playing finger style nearer the neck? All this will make for a more authentic period correct sound. Effects weren't relied on then as they are now. Failing on all that I was deadly serious in my offer to try out on 2nd guitar. And I see Rockabilly Rumble are playing the Vic on Friday 20th. I'll probably venture down to that one
2. I too have the Butterscotch one and it is one of only two electric basses I play now (the other is also Squier). I have to say I prefer the Butterscotch to the Lake Placid Blue simply because I like a nice glossed neck. This model would still be an absolute steal at £200, never mind £120.
3. Hey Darren - we've spoken on PM about this music. I think space is good & actually live doesn't notice in the way it does in rehearsal. I'm looking to move back to Wiltshire soon & have both a Gretsch and a J200 acoustic so if you do go down the 2nd guitar route give us a shout.
4. Yeah, why not? It would promote the band, get me a free bass and appeal to my personal vanity Mine would be the a salmon pink early 50s P bass possibly with an upside down headstock.
5. I thought this was going to be a thread about being on this forum too much
6. With my last rig that I've only recently replaced I was another one who'd flightcased it and sat the cab on top of the empty flightcase. With my Ampeg rig I hadn't actually thought about it until I read this thread but it was plenty loud enough so I hope I'm OK.
7. But it must be true if someone is saying it on the Internet though, right?
8. I used to take a backup bass but having only broken one string once back in the 90s when I played punk with a pick and didn't look after my kit I think I'm happy to take my chances.
9.
I'm just curious but in what way did it impact on the 2nd hand market?
It just pushed the prices up overnight to match the increase. A MIM Fender was going for almost £100 less 2nd hand and suddenly people were selling them for the retail price they'd paid 5yrs earlier. I guess it is just what happens, after all most old Fenders cost new a fraction of what they now go for.
10.
Chopped up and folded old style mouse mat, or a dishwasher sponge are popular options.
Ha! Beat me to it whilst I was typing. I got stuck trying to spell scourer!
11. It depends on how much of an effect you want and what height your bridge is at. I've used the foam backs from kitchen scourers and my main bass has a tiny section of computer mouse mat which works perfectly. Just playing around with household stuff usually finds something.
12. I think stuff sells, it just takes longer. The last couple of things I sold I was in absolutely no hurry, stuck to my guns and didn't bump very often and both went for the price I wanted. The crime for me was that Fender et al really hiked the prices as the recession kicked in which in turn impacted on the 2nd hand market. Thankfully this was at the end of my GAS phase so it didn't impact as much as it would have 2yrs earlier.
13. Born To Creuse
14. Sounds awesome, love the Windmill too but I'm still hungover from last night's jaunt
15. Hi Ben - Loz mentioned my old rig (just sold it recently after 4yrs solid gigging with it) and I had flightcased it. The lid came off and I'd take it out the tray and stick it on top of the flightcase shell. It was *never* a problem. I only sold it as I wanted the more period correct look of the Ampeg and the Orange stuff was worth more so I could get some money back. If I didn't have the flightcase you could always put it on an amp stand, a crate or a table. Job done
16. I'm a VIP member because I bought a case!?! I must admit the savings are huge and highly tempting but I just don't get the urge to buy like I used to.
17. As said bass is easier to get started on but once you start trying things like upright slap bass you realise it isn't a walk in the park. I have long stopped getting offended by the "easy guitar" comments. And let's face it, sometimes it is great fun to play a really simple line that is totally effective.
18. With any pickup replacement you need to ask yourself 1) what you are looking for and 2) what is it that the stock pickups are not doing for you? The CV stuff sounds good to me but there are plenty of improvements out there. If you want a more traditional sound you would be looking at anything 50s or 60s reissue but if you want a bit more high output then something different would be on the cards. Cost is also a factor. Personally I like the Seymour Duncan range (Antiquity especially) but then if I was playing something else I'd probably go for a different pickup from their range.
19. There are pictures of him playing upright bass too on some of the rockabilly groups on Facebook. I'm sure he could play a bit but I don't suppose he gave Billy Sheenan a run for his money
20. Either you had a dog or mine is a great one. I actually attempted my 1st review of mine here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230129-cabronita-precision-bass-a-review/page__p__2372375__hl__squier%20cabronita__fromsearch__1#entry2372375
21.
Was a bit surprised that it seems to be the only Fender amp that Roqsolid don't offer a cover for but I guess I can get one made.
I've had this a couple of times & if you give them the dimensions they'll not only do one for you but also start to list the model as one they do.
22. I started on a 4/4 bass which I didn't realise until I really got into it. I sold it on and moved to a 3/4 which has been a bit easier when it comes to sharing / borrowing basses. I'd stay in my comfort zone from now on in.
23. My band with the indie deal has a webpage that cost a few hundred and my knockabout band has a free site where we paid a few quidd for the domain name. I think the expensive site looks good but is a real battle to upload new information (designed by a computer programmer who forgets we're all simple musicians). The other band literally has all of 2 pages and serves a purpose. I agree that in an age of Twitter and Facebook they are less essential but both direct people to see us on the various social networking sites, can sell merch and have the capacity to capture those who don't tweet etc. I think they are a good idea. Googling cheap easy band sites or similar should get you started.
24.
Really? I don't remember it being all that much better than BGM is now. It too had its share of editorial bloopers and smelling pistakes, and fixations with certain manufacturers.
It just caught my imagination at the time and it was pre-online days so I remember sending off for ashtray covers etc that were advertised in the back. I'm sure I view it through rose tinted spectacles like a few others here.
25. These threads never get too far before someone mentions the early 90s when Bassist magazine broke off from Guitarist.... so I will, what a great magazine! I stopped my BGM subscription and the very next issue they had Lee Rocker on the cover and I kept forgetting to pick a copy up. That aside I really don't miss it. One article in over a year doesn't really justify it for me.
