1. Sounds great and we should also congratulate ourselves on some splendid avatars. Well done Gents!
2. Parts are easy to get for Fenders, also Leo Fender designed stuff to be replaced easily. I think these are the main reasons before people start going on about Q/C. WIthin about a year of owning a Squier (my 1st) I was changing the scratchplate and it just progresses from that. Also it is quite good fun, proven by the fact we regularly get posters on here saying they are buying a bass to mod it. Typed as CamdenRob posted.
3. A far cry from the gear threads I'd post circa 2008/9, I've been operating at a GAS free happier level for about 3yrs now. Nothing against the pursuit for dream gear but I've been learning to appreciate what I have, spend cash travelling / doing other things & not have 30 instruments sitting in cases! Anyway, presenting - The blondes in my life; my European upright bass (with Shadow pickup) & Squier CV 50s P-bass with Vox practice amp half in shot. My old faithful striped 70s Fender Precision & Orange rig. It's my only rig I use & all I need. And that's all folks (apart from an acoustic guitar, a mandolin & a telecaster that are mostly rested these days)...
4.
Can't remember if I've posted a pic of my pink P-Bass? So, just in case I haven't, here it is: I used it for recording last week - at the studio of Wet Wet Wet's guitarist Graeme Duffin. It's a converted building literally 5 minutes from my house. The engineer, Sandy, who worked on the Wets' hits loved the instrument's sound, which was a really nice compliment.
Just perfect. My girlfriend's daughter would love me to own this. Cool as...
5. I had the opposite thing happen to me a couple of years ago when my P bass wanted me to get a girlfriend!?! Nice pic btw
6. I find stuff comes full circle. The Clash & the New York Dolls were my favourite bands at one point but I reckon they've been played about 3 times in the last 15yrs. If space is the problem Amazon marketplace to make money or charity shop if you just want shot of them.
7. I've been bullying drummers into using them since 2007, brilliant stuff. Unfortunately the drummer in my current band bought a blue camouflage one but yours looks the biz.
8. I've been through the whole buying basses GAS thing and now am happy with a couple, ironically favouring a Squier. I think ultimately it's whatever works for you. If you want a £2k bass, go for it. I had a lot of fun buying kit (unnecessarily?) but am thankfully more settled now.
9. My tastes in (healthier) foods have completely changed in the last 5yrs. My tastes in bass gear is the same as it always has been - & I have tried to keep an open mind.
10. Took da kids on a trip to the local Fire station today - the only photo I have... I really don't normally look like this!
11. Good luck everyone. Avatar in place. I read it as we shave last thing at night but the rules aren't too clear. Here we mo!
12.
A lot of the squeezebox players I know (including me) use these guys http://www.newmoonin...sical/index.php
I came to New Moon through Basschat. I've not made a claim but if you give them a call they are really helpful. I had issues around values and ownership that Musicguard couldn't answer. I get the impression this lot would be more likely to payout as the advice I got was sensible and realistic.
13. Our school bought keyboards and I remember a room full of 12yr olds trying to play popular TV themes. It was hell. No bass or guitars at my school, we were all fully embracing the 1980s!
14. Not sure why you didn't get a response but I put flats on a few acoustic basses and it really wakes up the bass in my experience. Sometimes they can even make a cheap sounding bass sound really classic. Go for it!
15. For those who might be interested. The Velvets were standard listening when I was in Sixth Form http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/lou-reed-velvet-underground-leader-and-rock-pioneer-dead-at-71-20131027
16. I have a girl in each of my bands who are both talented and classy, each good looking. One plays violin / keyboards and one sings. Drunken idiots in pubs come in all shapes and sizes after all.
17. Welcome back Jon. A few rule changes on buying and selling since you last came here (check the links in my sig for up to date rules) but good to have you back. Still the best bass community online
18. In terms of replying to the email, personally I'd send a brief but not rude reply just acknowledging the email. No point arguing, and it looks more professional. Quite often when bands do this they break up shortly after. Go out with some class and dignity, moving on to better things, be it bass or fishing
19. It's a problem that is more common on Jazz basses. I've come across it twice and got rid of both basses in the end (one was resolved with a new pup & the other I cut my losses, taking a massive hit getting rid of it). I had a blue flower bass like this and the volume across the strings was perfect so this thread has certainly come as a surprise. My gut feeling is if you have switched the pup then the setup or the strings would be the next thing to look at. Something as simple as a deader couple of string could be the issue? Pickup wise I appreciate you can't keep buying them but Seymour Duncan's Antiquity range is really well balanced and I've used those on tele basses before. Good luck sorting it out.
20. Both my basses are 70s but I recently bought a Squier as I wanted a cheaper bass. So I did exclusively play older kit until a couple of months ago and didn't worry about reliability. I noticed a change in the market too and stuff certainly isn't going for the price it would have done around 2009. I think it is down to the recession. There is still a huge demand for vintage stuff but it just can't command the same prices. I think offering collection only etc impacts on price though. It's dipped a bit but not massively. The examples like that Rickenbacker are not the norm but they are increasingly common.
21. I'm with Hobbayne here, nice bass. Hofner also do a Verythin bass and a club bass, both of which are great fun. The Burns Bison always sounded a bit weak to me but looked the part. Assuming you are avoiding the Jazz / Precision route?
