1. I think there is a market for most things so in principle it would work. You would just need to tap into the right market. It comes down to whether you'd be playing for money or fun. Potentially there must be people who'd love to hear all this stuff.
That's "Old School"??!!
I must confess I clicked on this thread looking for Buddy Holly
2. I was with Musicguard for years until I heard bad things about them being difficult paying out - I phoned them to query it as I don't have receipts and they said I'd need valuations on everything.... I had a recommendation for Newmoon insurance and phoned them. They worked out more than 50% cheaper and were cool with photographs of the instruments with online quotes. I can't see me claiming but I want to know that if the worst does happen I'm not paying out for nothing. Sound advice about small print here and especially for those reliant on home insurance.
3. Great article - I'm thinking a lot of country stuff like Hank WIlliams and Johnny Cash
4. It's funny I was always on it but it took me a few seconds to remember that it did actually used to look like that
5. I clicked on this thinking it'd be a rockabilly guy... this bass player is at the wrong gig!
6.
Not spare strings, but i do have an old beater of an electric bass in the car just in case the db implodes.
This. Only because my improvised human beatbox is rubbish though
7. I'm pretty much with Dingus here. I don't align myself with one or the other and take it on a bass by bass basis
8. I echo the sentiments about how you play when it is stripped back - it sounds terrible when bands play the same way as you should be really dialing everything right back. Personally I've used an upright bass, I've plugged a P-bass in though a PA and I've used an acoustic bass guitar. I don't think there really is a right answer in kit used, more the way you approach the songs
9. I'm going to moderate myself for starting this thread!
10.
did they tell the staff?
Nice!
11. Being as I started this thread and it has transformed into a celebration of Howard's work, this is what he did for me
12. Based on a true story
13. Surely the upright bass has to be a contender? Certainly is in rock 'n' roll
14. Interesting review Rabbie, I'd seen the bass before but think I am happy lugging mine around as is - an opinion that occasionally changes at the end of the night!
15. I rehearse in a factory during the evening and I must confess my endpins seem to last all of about 3 rehearsals due to the concrete flooring so I'm reading this thread with interest
16. Somebody clearly not afraid to play the note of C on a very nice looking bass
17. The Bass Doc on here would do it, I'm sure but can't help you on an original to trace
18. I had a Korean Squier back in the 80s and I recall it was very playable with a good neck. I'd always recommend them although mine must have gotten sold on at some point in the mid 90s
19. Leather on instruments has been around for years - Elvis. Waylon Jennings etc but tends not to work on bass. I had a guitar phase a few years back that resulted in me getting a tele made in the Waylon style leather. It looked great. When I returned to bass I had a leather pickguard made for my 51 p bass and it looked awful. Superbly made, it just didn't work
20. My first purchase in years was the Squier 50s P bass and I love it. I've owned several £1000+ basses and I can't believe how much fun you can have with a cheap bass. I was going to mod it but actually once I changed the strings and had it set up it plays so well the only mods were cosmentic.
21. I don't get why people have problems with Nitro Mors; here is one of my threads on how I did my 2nd bass http://basschat.co.uk/topic/111302-1979-fender-precision-re-mojod/page__hl__1979 and again someone else struggles with it there. I think the phrase "patience grasshopper" spings to mind. It took a while but was totally worth it
22. The trick with Nitro Mors is to leave it on for ages - I've done two basses with it and it worked a treat.
23. My Mum. She left some really cool records lying around the house so from an early age I was subjected to classic soul, country & rock 'n' roll
24. Great photos Bluejay. I'm pretty sure I've played a bill with that guy but it might just be that everyone on the Americana circuit looks the same!
