1. Hot Dog - Corky Jones AKA Buck Owens, later covered by Shakin' Stevens* *giving my age away with the later not the former!
2. Love the band & my strings have been spunged up for years, so to speak
3. We had a hire van stolen outside of the Forum in Tunbridge Wells back in 1995. We were doing a drum kit share so our drummer's kit was in there. Luckily for me the deal was my amp was used by all otherwise it would have been my amp too. I think there are a lot of players bringing high value kit into venues and you just never know. I insure my kit through New Moon which costs about £60 for £5k worth of gear, having previously insured through Musicguard. If you can take the hit it's worth chancing but I am happy to pay less than a tenner a month for piece of mind. A school friend had a Gibson paid out for via home insurance back in the early 90s but these days I think the companies have really clamped down on paying out for those sorts of claims. You either need to a separate policy or to take your chances.
4. That body looks amazing. I really like the tint you've given it. I stripped my 79 P-bass as I too noticed a lot of players from the 60s and 70s did this but left it without sealer. I like the Wizard pickups too and even position my thumb rest in the same way. All well up my street
5. Breaking news (to me anyway but not seen it elsewhere or on this thread) Wilko Johnson is now able to play live again and there is another album in the making http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/wilko-to-play-live-again/
6. I use Vista Print too and always unsubscribe from every offer so I never get the bombarding of emails etc. Also you can upgrade the cards to get a more pro finish. The downside is I always wind up with loads left as I only give out a handful a year at most so BigRedX probably has the best suggestion here
7. I tend to write my own bass lines 99% of the time but will happily take an idea off of someone else if they have a good suggestion. Equally I'm not afraid to suggest a part for the guitar or similar. Ultimately though this is arrangements and not writing. The writer is the songwriter who sits in his / her room and comes up with chords / melody / lyrics etc. I write a bit but I've been blessed to work with 3 or 4 superb writers over the last 20+ years. Luckily we've never made it quite big enough to all fall out over the money or who did what I bet a lot of bass players & other musicians think they are writing but ultimately whilst we contribute to a creative process we could find ourselves cut out of any royalties if the band starts to take off. Some bands like U2, Kiss in the early days etc just split equally but many don't. Some of you might want to have that conversation with your own bands.
Unfortunately IME there are an awful lot of musicians who will never amount to any more than regurgitators of other peoples ideas.
People like Elvis Presley for example? I don't think it is unfortunate. I'd rather hear good covers done well as opposed to an originals band that are dreadful. We all bring different skills to the table and some of the best musicians I know focus on playing sessions, teaching, playing at home or working in covers bands. And I say that as someone who has dedicated my career to original bands almost entirely for 25yrs.
8. KatMen are back on tour in September. Well worth watching. It's been implied but to be clear it's only Darrel (Imelda's husband) and Al from Imelda May's band with Slim Jim Phantom being from, well practically everyone else! Amazing band and my gig of the year for me.
9. I had an old Silver series Fender back in the day, great basses
10.

Not sure if this is posted as a joke but I did at least 10yrs of gigs dressed like this At OP, there are no winners in a scenario that involves wearing 80s yellow shorts. Keep it simple
11. I use ad blocker on Google chrome so y'all go right ahead and do whatever you like
12. I put retro harma valves in mine which were picked up cheap from Watford valves. It just means the break up doesn't occur so early and I've never had a problem getting the sound I want. Mine's well over 3yrs old now and reading this thread it looks like they've addressed that issue anyway
13. Gene Simmons from Kiss wrote the most boring of the 3 original Kiss members autobiographies. I was a big fan so found it ok. I really liked Duff McKagan's book and found it quite inspiring. For the best car crash read, go to the 60s soul stars - Bettye Lavette's starts with her pimp dangling her out of a New York tower block and then manages to pick up the pace! Likewise Bobby Womack's is equally unsubtle starting with his ex-wife trying to kill him. Makes the wild men of hard rock seem quite straight by comparison. I can't remember the title but the ex-Blondie bassist Nigel Harrison did a book about his experiences and being passed over that was kind of interesting but typing this 10yrs later clearly not that memorable.
14. When I buy a new bass, I put flats on and leave it. I haven't bought a bass in over 3yrs so at least that and counting.... I restrung my upright bass last week as I wanted to put some rockabilly weedwackers on it. That was a workout in itself! Nobody would moan about restringing guitars or bass guitars ever again once you've done a double bass
15. I left Bassworld for a short lived semi acceptable go at guitar and TDPRI was a good second best (I played teles so it worked well for me - but to steal Gary's line as it's American you might think it sucks dude). Equally phases in Hofner, Orange and Gretsch had me on their very narrow focused sites which seemed to be "our brand is great...yes it is!" and everyone else then agreeing. I came back to Basschat and without wishing to click my heels and be called Dorothy, there really is no place like home. It's not the lesser amount of strings, this is why some say it is easier to play bass!
16. Personally I ran out of gear to sell, but that's divorce for you!
17. 1) I always thought the bass player was the coolest one in the bands I liked (a minority view) 2) A lot of TV / Film soundtracks from when I was growing up 3) A lot of people played guitar & were in bands needing a bass player
18. I watched some of it on the iPlayer, superb. The whole rock n roll era was just fantastic and I am surprised there aren't more great shows about it
19. I too was on Bassworld but left for a few years. I remember Kiwi saying they'd moved to Basschat but forgot the name so had to google it. I had a feeling at the time I'd registered when it first started but I couldn't recall my under which username or password so had to join again. I hope it's not a problem I clicked on Recommendation from real life human but it was actually Kiwi so I'm not 100% convinced this was the best option
20.
It’s got some dings, but nothing too terrible.
Nothing too terrible? Hey I loving put most of those in myself! That bass has been on TV, played the Marquee Club, toured the UK and has more stories than Jackanory! If I had the desire to own another bass it'd be this one. And it's only a bitsa because I kept wearing bits out! Someone will get a great bass
21. Don't use one anymore. I once broke a string back in 1997. Back then I had a much poorer technique, I played with a heavy pick on lighter strings and right by the bridge. Now I play with very heavy strings away from the bridge and play fingerstyle. Touchwood but I'm fairly confident that in hundreds of gigs later the string breakage of '97 will continue to a distant memory. Using passive basses there is less to go wrong too. All that said, in my rockabilly band I think if the upright bass let me down I'd just be buggered though! edit typo
22. I can't remember the last time I did something to try & impress teenage girls... I'm aiming for the Mums!
23. We use capos a lot in my band but the guys know the chords correctly. I like it because when I get an MP3 to work out a new song I just have to find the root note, work out where Pete (singer) has put the capo and I have the whole song worked out in about 30 seconds! All that said a neighbour who plays guitar & jams with me still thinks it is D major no matter where the capo is. I just adapt as he has those 2 extra strings to worry about
24. Further to reading this thread I phoned my Insurer. It looks like a valuation letter is all that is required when there is no receipt. I also checked out New Moon & they can offer me the same cover for half the price. Nice one
