Tommy Cogbill - never gets a mention, was a great bass player
Cat Burrito replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
He doesn't seem to quite get the recognition of James Jamerson, does he and yet he is of a similar league. He played for Elvis, the Box Tops and tended to lead sessions in the studio. A legend of bass -
I always used to lend out my bass rig and have lent out my bass on a couple of occasions, all very happily. However I got really fed up with ungrateful bassists who could barely bring themselves to say thanks. One even critiqued my bass ("strings too heavy, I nearly ripped out that foam under the bridge and the covers get in the way - I'm a guitarist you see!") and I was tempted to give him a lift up to A&E to help them remove it from where the sun don't shine... So now it's just people I know or are polite. Otherwise it's no skin off my nose if your band doesn't get to play because your kit isn't up to the job.

What do you like about this bass?
Cat Burrito replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
Reminds me of the EKO violin bass, I don't hate it...just don't really like it too much either!?! -
Unlucky import tax on bass parts - am I stuffed?
Cat Burrito replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Yup, you just need to grit your teeth and pay the fee mate. No fun, as I know from my own experience.
Oh I paid it, no choice really -
I bought two Precision ashtray covers from the US for $24.37 which at the current exchange rate is £15.55 and got stung for over £11 in duties because it was over £15 today. Unlucky or what? The seller listed the items at the correct rate, the import tax was £3.24 and the Royal Mail charge an £8 handling fee for this. I had a look around and it looks like I'll have to take the hit. The seller correctly priced the customs declaration (I wouldn't ask them not to), the value is over £15 and I don't appear to have a leg to stand on. Unless anyone has any bright ideas? It's getting harder to buy stuff these days!? Even the two guys at the sorting office seemed genuinely sympathetic

I was on holiday and got recognised. I was with my girlfriend in the early days of us going out and it impressed her. I played it with a swan like cool

Anyone seen or heard from him recently? I placed an order with him end of last month having read his 7 pages of "top bloke / great comms" feedback and not heard anything for ages. I chased it back on the 8th and he replied to say he was doing my pickguard next and it should be here by last weekend. He's not been in touch since and I haven't received anything. I have emailed the paypal email address and messaged him on here but he's not been on for a few days now. I refuse to believe he's had me over as he has so many positive transactions but the silence is certainly strange and bucks the trend of what everyone else has said. Does anyone know him? Is he ok? I figure he's a popular chap so somebody might be able to shed some light for me. Cheers,

My Mum always told me never show my bongos to strange men who ask online

If it wasn't I think it's fair to say they haven't had their finest hour here on Basschat

My main bass for 15yrs+ was a sunburst & my screensaver (at present) is Elvis with a cool 50s sunburst P-bass so I guess I'm in the fan category

Harley Benton Vs Squier VM Jazz basses - Opinions please!
Cat Burrito replied to Gamble's topic in Bass Guitars
The worst instrument I ever played was a Harley Benton... could have been unlucky but horrendous action (that couldn't be fixed), dreadful finish & just cheap. The Squier VM range on the other hand get raved about more than entry level Fenders. If it was me I wouldn't think twice about it -
I'm another butterscotch blonde owner which I'd argue is plenty yellow enough but can't photograph it as it is awaiting some custom parts (new pickguard and ashtrays). Got to say I remember and love that Graffiti Yellow colour even if it does remind me of Yngwie J Malmsteen

Hofner do a long scale 34" version as well on the current crop of reissues. I think the Chinese Hofners are nice value for money instruments and I've played a fair few.

I think irrational dislike is a bit strong but headless basses, badass bridges, active pickups and most modern designs aren't really to my tastes. We're all different though.

I use a little Vox practice amp so feel I may be disappointing those who are hoping to see "rigs". Incredibly this one has gigged and been used on a track we released. It's best at home of course but surprisingly versatile. Incidentally I love the look of that little Ampeg b100r

I had 2 or 3 Wizard Trads from his site so wish him a long, happy and healthy retirement.
Can such a lightweight amp really sound any good?? Is it a good bet? Along a similar line, Ampeg Portaflex PF350 + PF210 looks interesting, if rather less powerful (actually from the photos the cab looks a bit flimsy).
The first point is "yes", amps have changed a LOT over the last 1o-15yrs and you'd be amazed what quality of sound comes out of things we wouldn't have given a 2nd look at back in the day. Secondly the Ampeg Portaflex stuff generally gets raved about on here. I tried one in rehearsal and it was great. I even considered trading my Orange stuff in for the Ampeg but I think the Orange stuff is serving me well still (& more expensive). To be fair most things around now are superior to the older stuff and coming from me that's a surprising recommendation

I read up on it first but when I went to Richer Sounds (everybody is recommending them for a reason!) and they talked me into a different set up. A great recommendation! I also invested in some really good laptop speakers too so I can actually hear the bass on things like YouTube. The ipod dock is a must (I think mine was about £15) but I use the turntable a lot. Funnily enough the CD player has probably been used about 12 times in 4 years

Band PAs - what to get, anyone bought one?
Cat Burrito replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Is this just going to be set up permanently in your rehearsal space and never used for gigs?
Possibly & this did occur but equally it's all unchartered waters so we could well be carting it around for some gigs. Who knows? Everything is still early stages and we've no intention of rushing into buying something at this stage as the drummer's boss could kick us out in a few weeks / months or it could roll for years. The thread was as much to see how other musicians coped (possibly more so) rather than see if we could grab a bargain on here as we're not ready just yet to buy into something. -
I wasn't sure if it was a wind up at first but I'd heard wedging a tennis ball down between the body and the bridge makes a difference... so I did it and I never get feedback issues
-
I was looking at these just yesterday and wondered if one would be loud enough for a rehearsal with a fairly quiet 3 piece - small kit & guitar? The YouTube clips looked pretty decent

Fender to finally make the Starcaster bass and reissue the Coronado?
Cat Burrito replied to neepheid's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't think the Starcaster bass qualifies as part of the Pawn Shop strategy - it technically never existed (beyond something like 4 prototypes) and so in practice is a brand new model as far as Joe Public is concerned.
To be clearer it was more a reference to them pushing less conventional models rather than affiliating with any of the current ranges. I guess my point was they are trying to break with convention a little more lately -
OK, sensible reply then - I think the answer lies within any genre being diluted. The early disco stuff was great music but once it catches on, the bar is somewhat lowered and acts of a substandard nature kick in - this is why a genre sucks. I remember in rock circles the debut Guns 'N' Roses album coming out in 1987 and it was fresh and exciting. By the time Nirvana came along we had 1000s of clone bands who were mostly awful so Nirvana broke through. Same with Britpop, any genre. I guess this is why Disco sucked even though a lot of it was actually very good.

And yet Kev, also it would seem answered the question!
