1. I've had my copy since the mid 90s when it was first published. I think it's fair to say anything with Tony Bacon's name on it is always going to be at least half way decent
2.
"well the alternative is a lot worse"!
A very fair point well made, have yourself a good decade / birthday
3. Different areas, different problems - around here bass players are rarer than Rocking Horse s**t but I try and treat the bands better than the drummers in the OP. Some musicians can just act like idiots and to be fair in the past I've been stung by unreliable drummers. My main band has an amazing drummer who doesn't play for anyone else and is a great player. Threads like this remind me it's a luxury and certainly not the norm.
4. Wow, I have a three piece rockabilly band that practices in my house most Tuesdays. We amp the guitar through a tiny Fender 5w Champion valve amp and the drummer bangs his sticks on the guitar case. No mics and I just use my upright as is. My view is that the houses either side have noisy kids that have woken me up before so for 3 out of every 4 weeks for one night we can make some noise for about 3hrs always stopping around 9.30 - 10pm. Nobody has ever come around. I'm so quiet the rest of the time, I'm rarely in, I never complain, I cut the neighbours front lawns and lend them hedge cutters. I keep myself to myself and generally act like a typical serial killer. 3hrs of noise isn't going to kill them...or is it?!
5. This is more common with Jazz basses than people realise. I had one of the early Mexican Jazzes back in 1994 and my E and G were louder than my A and D. I even had a letter published in Guitarist magazine at the time asking that Doctor how to fix it. I tried restringing, adjusting the pickup (couldn't afford to replace it at the time) and in the end I cut my losses & sold it on. Periodically I've seen the problem come up since. I suspect it is in the pickups and now it wouldn't be a problem for me to explore. I've owned a couple of Jazz basses since and thankfully neither have had the problem. Good luck sorting it out.
6. One word.... Hot!
7. I've not done cruise ship work myself but I am familiar with written terms and conditions at venues being a little more relaxed once you actually get there. That said I wouldn't assume this will be the case. Personally I could go without very easily but we're all different. I can't help but wonder if they had a problem in the past with a previous musician? I'm kind of with Chris_b in that if these are the rules then you have to adhere to them. I also wonder if the 2wks would be a nightmare as they may set very high standards but all this is speculation and you wouldn't know unless you go and find out
8. I wanted one for years, that looks great - bet it weighs a bit!
9. Plus one on good Orange customer service so i can't work out why they aren't being helpful as I have only heard positive things on here. I bought mine and the orange light didn't come on but they sent a replacement out free of charge no quibble. Good luck sorting it out
10. I'm in my 5th year with Case Hardin who are an Americana UK act on Clubhouse Records and shameless plug alert - our next album is due out next month. I mainly play bass guitar plus a little bit of mandolin & upright bass too. I also play upright bass in The Jimmy Sixes who play 50s Rock 'n' Roll / Rockabilly which is my knockabout fun band
11.
Plus....Sonny Burgess, Eddie Bond, Jack Earls, Mac Curtis, Johnny Carroll, Charlie Feathers, Billy Lee Riley..... ah there are thousands. And they are all way better than bill haley ....but then who isn't !?!?! You may have noticed that Im not a fan ..to me, he is very much the "safe-commercial-watered down face" of the music, and there is a huge wealth of artists that are much, much better.
Chris - fair point and I felt at the time that I could have kept going. I can't believe I didn't mention Sonny Burgess but if you look again at my original list I did mention Billy Lee Riley You sound like a man after my own heart
12. When I was in Sixth Form (1990) my band felt I was hanging out with my girlfriend too much so split the band, only to reform very quickly in a new band without me. It hurt like hell at the time but we've all been great mates for years since. Pretty rotten thing to do but I wasn't pulling my weight. I've never been sacked since and ironically from that band I am the only one who is still playing and inadvertently I think it gave me my drive and determination for the subsequent bands I have been in
13. Eddie Cochran? Buddy Holly? Barbara Pittman? Billy Lee Riley? Little Richard? Wanda Jackson? Gene Vincent? Janis Martin? Bob Luman? Jack Scott? Carl Mann? Johnny Burnette? Larry Williams? Jumpin' Gene Simmons? Ray Smith?.... I'm pretty sure there is loads of great stuff as well as Bill Haley and I didn't even have to mention Elvis!
14. It's still very competitively priced though. i saw this prior to the thread but didn't have a grand to spend on a bass
15. And suddenly the problem is twice as bad.... at least I've run out of cats!
16. Came down the stairs this morning and was reminded why I should always zip it up or remove the gig bag My cat appears disproportionately large compared to the bass!?!
17. Forgive my damning praise but I sit in the "I like it but wouldn't buy it" camp
18. Hot Dog - Corky Jones AKA Buck Owens, later covered by Shakin' Stevens* *giving my age away with the later not the former!
19. Love the band & my strings have been spunged up for years, so to speak
20. We had a hire van stolen outside of the Forum in Tunbridge Wells back in 1995. We were doing a drum kit share so our drummer's kit was in there. Luckily for me the deal was my amp was used by all otherwise it would have been my amp too. I think there are a lot of players bringing high value kit into venues and you just never know. I insure my kit through New Moon which costs about £60 for £5k worth of gear, having previously insured through Musicguard. If you can take the hit it's worth chancing but I am happy to pay less than a tenner a month for piece of mind. A school friend had a Gibson paid out for via home insurance back in the early 90s but these days I think the companies have really clamped down on paying out for those sorts of claims. You either need to a separate policy or to take your chances.
21. That body looks amazing. I really like the tint you've given it. I stripped my 79 P-bass as I too noticed a lot of players from the 60s and 70s did this but left it without sealer. I like the Wizard pickups too and even position my thumb rest in the same way. All well up my street
22. Breaking news (to me anyway but not seen it elsewhere or on this thread) Wilko Johnson is now able to play live again and there is another album in the making http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/wilko-to-play-live-again/
23. I use Vista Print too and always unsubscribe from every offer so I never get the bombarding of emails etc. Also you can upgrade the cards to get a more pro finish. The downside is I always wind up with loads left as I only give out a handful a year at most so BigRedX probably has the best suggestion here
24. I tend to write my own bass lines 99% of the time but will happily take an idea off of someone else if they have a good suggestion. Equally I'm not afraid to suggest a part for the guitar or similar. Ultimately though this is arrangements and not writing. The writer is the songwriter who sits in his / her room and comes up with chords / melody / lyrics etc. I write a bit but I've been blessed to work with 3 or 4 superb writers over the last 20+ years. Luckily we've never made it quite big enough to all fall out over the money or who did what I bet a lot of bass players & other musicians think they are writing but ultimately whilst we contribute to a creative process we could find ourselves cut out of any royalties if the band starts to take off. Some bands like U2, Kiss in the early days etc just split equally but many don't. Some of you might want to have that conversation with your own bands.
Unfortunately IME there are an awful lot of musicians who will never amount to any more than regurgitators of other peoples ideas.
People like Elvis Presley for example? I don't think it is unfortunate. I'd rather hear good covers done well as opposed to an originals band that are dreadful. We all bring different skills to the table and some of the best musicians I know focus on playing sessions, teaching, playing at home or working in covers bands. And I say that as someone who has dedicated my career to original bands almost entirely for 25yrs.
