1. For me it's the Hofner Verithin, my only bass I play these days
2. For me soundproofing is a huge factor. We've had all acoustic rehearsals and it's a non starter if you have a really loud rock band playing nearby if it isn't properly soundproofed. Parking is good. A water cooler is good. Free tea and coffee is a nice touch and a good backline is great. Even after 25yrs of playing it still amazes me how disrespectful other players can be of kit that they are borrowing. I'd add it's also nice if when booking they ask what you want and it's in the room. The number of times we're running around on our time trying to find a 3rd mic is not cool
3. I use a shadow pickup that fits into the bridge and doesn't shift. You get the true sound of the bass and it doesn't budge. I only ever plug into the PA with upright bass and it's never been a problem for me
4. I had one (fretted) that looked great but sounded rotten. I re-strung it with flats and suddenly it came into its own. I only sold it to pay for my divorce so I'd be thinking of snapping it up if I were you
5. I've done it a few times. Use a dried out one from the kitchen rather than a brand new one and keep stopping to check. It's a pain BUT if you get into it too much in the same direction you'll mark it in a certain way. It should only take a couple of minutes but the "less is more" theory is the key. Do the screw heads fairly vigorously though or they'll shine like beacons! If you do over do it at all it only looks fake from a few inches away. As I said I've done a few now and I only mucked up one cover in all that time. Good luck
6.
I did wonder about getting a new one and having a go at ageing it - if a brillo pad works then I'm game!! I had a look online and with a bottle of hydrochloric acid you can do wonders apparently but not too sure if I want to go quite that far!!!
An example of my efforts with a brillo pad. It's subtle but totally hitting the spot. I have a few threads on here where I've mentioned it. This is a 76 Jazz with modern covers. Works for me Anything more will be too obvious
7.
I'm having the same problem trying to find scruffy pickguard screws and 70 Jazz pickup screws.
As per my earlier post, take the screw out but this time rub it quite vigorously on the screw end with a dry brillo pad. Pop it back in & it is as authentic as you could hope for
8. Get new covers and rub them gently for a bit with a dry brillo pad. It's a cheat I've used in the past and makes them look authentic. Don't rub them too much in the same direction and go for an even covering - you'll be amazed at how good it looks
9. I'm pretty much with chardbass on this one. I don't see why that Michael Jackson guy is troubling anyone; that video has only had 186 views, of which a few will be curious basschatters. I won't pretend his performance was life changing but he's hardly going to make his millions or steal shows from my band. Good luck to him. The tribute scene isn't my thing but it can be done very well & clearly there is a market for it. Live & let live I say
10. Ace Frehley's post Kiss band Frehley's Comet at the Hammersmith Odeon in March (17th to be precise) 1988. Bassman John Regan fell over onstage and then tried to convince the audience it was part of the act. He fooled nobody.
11. I use my Hofner Verithin bass all the time now. I read a lot of negativity around short scale basses but having tried one it is now my go to bass. I like the look of the Hagstrom stuff and used to own a Jack Cassady bass. I haven't suffered from GAS for years so I'm sticking with the Hofner
12. My guitarist works full time as a guitar teacher and you just have to protect yourself; he gets a lot of older clients with important jobs who won't take direction but such silliness comes with the job. Losing money and wasting slots is not acceptable though. I think a general rule to all students needs to be introduced tactfully where nobody is blamed. Whether you claim in advance or students are fined for cancellations you then simply stick to this rule. Then there is much less danger of the guy being a prat about it as he's had the rules explained to him. I do think a rule for all though so as he doesn't feel singled out - the rest won't mind as they (hopefully) show up anyway
13. There is a lot to be said for pressing 1000, I'd vary quotes and get quotes for different batches. Double the amount is not double the cost and you'd be amazed how quickly the pile goes down. The card record sleeve style certainly is the cheapest way of doing the sleeve. I've heard good things about Redeye too - I can't remember who we used last time around but it was a digipack anyway which is the most expensive. Remember to get the thing on ITunes, Amazon MP3 and Bandcamp as digital sales really do aid massively these days
14. Case Hardin is looking for additional musicians. We will happily audition any instrumentation beyond guitar, bass, drums.. so think mandolin, banjo, fiddle, piano, accordian, organ etc. Ability to sing preferable, but not essential. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, please mail us at [email protected], or message us on Facebook. There is plenty to look at on You Tube to get an idea of what you will be letting yourself in for. Case Hardin is signed to Clubhouse Records and plan to return to the studio in the coming months to record the follow up to the critically well received 'Every Dirty Mirror'
15. The going rate I've been quoted is around £200
16. There was a thread but I don't believe there is ever a problem with another thread
17. It's never good getting ripped off but it's probably not appropriate to share his details online
18. I'm in my 3rd year with Musicguard. I pay about £11 a month for £5k worth of stuff. Never had to claim but I figure it was worth covering stuff as I'm out playing a fair bit
19. I couldn't be bothered to click the link to hear them but they are a London based unsigned indie band, they are unlikely to be looking for Dr. Funkenstein. I don't see the problem. They are obviously just trying to maximise the chances of finding someone. I've played with a keyboard player who was really a bssist and several multi instrumentalists who were basically guitarists we didn't let play guitar. It's only rock 'n' roll after all...
20. I use Google Chrome's ad blocker so don't get anything but bizarrely got the local "ladies" one via the work computer. Not sure I'd be taking any of them home to meet my Mum though
21.
Getting gigs is easy if your band is any good. I'd say the hardest thing is to get all the band members to pull in roughly the same direction.
100% agree with the later part... Seem to be plenty of very average to slightly poor bands tripping over bookings though and I know of a few acts who are great who struggle to get bookings. Nice soundbite but I'm not sure it's the whole picture. Certainly though one rogue band mate can really drag down a whole act if the band isn't careful.
22. My set up onstage (well, on floor!) this week
23. Being a child of the 70s I thought the Wombles were great. Who cares whether something is cool or not?
24.
I think people are finally getting over the "You're not a proper Bass player if you play with a pick!" thing, mainly because it's a moronic point of view and demonstrably wrong.
I hope so. I play both styles & never understood why a certain style would be deemed more credible than another. Hadn't noticed an increase or decrease though
