1. I swear it was theme tunes like this one that planted the seed in the back of my mind about me playing bass
2. Why not advertise for a second hand hardly used set here? I've picked up a bunch of sets here really cheap over the years. I think the Fender ones are ok if you do go new
3. I'm a bit of a convert too. As a lifelong P-bass player I did have a phase briefly around 1995 that didn't work out so I reverted back to the Precision. I then bought a 70s bitsa Fender Jazz just over a year ago and it's been my mainstay live bass since May this year. I've not gigged with anything else .
4.
I'm always far more impressed when I see a good musician on a budget instrument.
Same here. @OP it's your bass, you do what you want
5. STOP PRESS - Orange just knocked the price down which made it a viable purchase for me http://www.orangeamps.com/uk-shop/product.php?id_product=54
6. I've been the main gig booker in every band I've ever joined / formed and in my current band the singer insisted that only he deals with the gigs. Fine with me
7. Awesome thread. My main Precision is a 79 I stripped - I kind of liked yours as you had it (funny guy that I am!) but that looks amazing. Good effort
8. Likewise, they replaced a faulty bulb when mine went FOC. I am happy staying loyal to them (obviously not just because of the bulb!)
9. Yes and yes. I try to book leave when we are playing further afield. It was harder a couple of years ago when I was juggling 3 bands and shift work but always seemed to land on my feet. Now I'm office hours and just one act so a fair bit easier
10. 22nd December 1989, the school pantomine! We were in lower sixth (Year 12 in new money) and we were the band that played the ball. We were pretty rubbish really in front of 800 students but lived out our rock star fantasies. We got to play assembly 9 months later at the start of Upper Sixth and totally nailed it. All the girls fancied us for at least 2 wks until the school rugby team won something and then we reverted back to just being that bunch of nancy boys again. Fame is a fickle mistress
11. Basses are always just tools. They might look amazingly cool etc etc but they are just there to serve us. Good or bad, they ain't going to sound quite the same when they are not be played
12. Glad to see you guys are back up & running. It won't be this one but I'll aim for a catch up in 2012. Best of luck
13. I've done a couple (Precisions) and I did test patches UNDER where the pickguard goes - best bit of advice I can give. I was happy with both my end results and I just used normal wood dye from B&Q with a bit of oil to finish it off
14. I have his autobiography for Xmas, he certainly looks like he's lived it these days
15. I haven't really kept up with Lion-O and the gang since the 80s
16. I'm getting flashbacks to school in the late 1980s... never had a great rep but some were ok if you can get a cheap example
17. I used to love the Manics in the early days but must confess lost interest once their mainstream album Everything Must Go came out. I think he's great, he doesn't pretend to be a great player but actually fits the band well. Personally I thought his solo album was a step too far but fair play to him
18. Being played... they are keepers so players don't worry about the condition for resale value
19. Good tune, the bass comes through nicely on my speakers
20. When I had cancer music was a big healer - I was playing live during treatments, gigging shortly after surgery and the doctors were laughing because I was more concerned about not being able to play live then going back to work! Likewise my marriage break up was something I coped with through music. I even did a gig on what would have been my wedding anniversary. You have to do what you have to do to get through the day And my relationship with music has proven to run deeper than my marriage did!
21. I've owned an Orange Crush Pix CR50BXT & an Ampeg BA-115. Not quite what you asked but pretty similar. I found the Ampeg tilt a tad unstable but probably more versatile with the 5 tone options it offers. The Orange had a really nice tone overall but mine was just a practice amp version. I'm kind of with StraightSix here in that it comes down to personal taste. Personally I'd probably lean towards the Orange just because the colour stands out but tonally both were fine. And again with xgsjx I'd favour a second hand bargain as the resale value of amps (especially in the current climate) suggests it's very much a buyers market right now
22. I'm a massive Orange fan but I thought £30 for a book was a bit steep in my mind. I have a bunch of books on gear but this just pushes it out of my league I'm afraid. I'd need to see it to consider a purchase
23. I have 3 and always use them when playing live (not all 3 though!). The Jazz is a bit less stable but if I angle it right (which I always do now) it's perfectly serviceable.
24. It doesn't seem to hurt when I've done it in the past. I'm now rocking a smaller rig though so usually find the strength to drag it in during the early hours. Valve heads & basses ALWAYS come in though
25. Oh, easy as that - they are!
