1. What are you after, just postage or a small donation to the site? I'll take the heavy gauge Rotosounds if nobody wants those two sets. Cheers
2. I got drunk before a gig where the backing vocalist of the support band was at least a foot shorter. Having done our big entrance walking through the crowd I got onstage and went to adjust the mic stand. I lost my footing and fell off stage before we'd even played a note. You can't claw it back from that!
3.
Apart from his looks etc. I think he sounds alright. He does seem to have half a mattress stuffed under there though... Can you palm mute if you play finger style? Am I missing a trick here?
Personally I play with the ashtray cover on so I can't do that. Bill Wyman plays with his thumb so can easily palm mute.
4.
The differences: Too much foam under the strings in a live situation. At 1.45 the bass player tries to play a line which he screws up because the notes die instantly. It doesn't work and sounds awful to me.
One thing I've noticed it it definitely sounds better when I play down the neck, the impact is slightly lost once you get further up the fretboard. Personally I don't have a problem with this guy's tone & I remember the clip when I saw it on Jools Holland's show. However, I do have a problem with his pickguard choice! Just goes to show we are all different
5. Both my Precisions have foam under the (flatwound) strings. If you don't like the technique I guess you aren't going to be a fan of my playing. I do it because I like the vintage thumpy sound & it suits my band
6. I bought mine just to look at the nice pictures really & I'm pleased I got it. I'm a bit surprised by the more negative comments, it's just a bit of fun really.
7. Broke the E string once at a gig circa 1998
8. Adding to the already good advice, don't bite if people stir it when you've left. Go with dignity and they'll miss you. If you go complaining you could lose friends. I too know what you mean, one bad attitude can drag the whole thing down. Best of luck
9. Thankfully, I'm happy and settled with mine
10. I appreciate that rOB. Because the Americana scene is quite small but loyal I know the 2 main promoters in Leicester (we played there back in Feb at The Donkey & had a fantastic time). I guess we're now just looking for a halfway home venue between Liverpool & Berkshire for Sunday so it doesn't have to be Leicester necessarily anymore. Thanks for the offer
11.
oo when and where are you playing in Leicester?
Unfortunately this one has now fallen through so we're looking for Sunday night too
Hi burritobass, you're best looking for your gigs down the Mathew Street side of town, either at the new Erics bar, Rubber Soul, The Cavern Pub or indeed the Cavern itself although it may be a little short notice for some of the promotors. Get in contact via email, you never know.
Thanks, my singer & drummer have pretty much tried everywhere - it wasn't short notice originally either. I think we've just been unlucky but cheers all the same
12. Sounds like your playing the wrong venues.
13. We signed an Indie deal at the start of the year and our album came out a couple of months ago to some favourable reviews in the National Press. The radio play has been a little quiet but fair. I'd like to have been a little busier gig wise but we've definitely gone quality over quantity. There's talk of the follow up album happening pretty fast too, maybe even a 2012 release. So generally pretty good. Away from playing my GAS that had been dying a death for a couple of years finally ground to a halt and I've downsized my kit to sensible levels - much happier with that too. Long may it stay the same too
14. As a massive Fender fan I think Fender got it really wrong. The recession kicked in, people are struggling so they jacked the prices right up. My most modern bass is late 80s now so it doesn't directly affect me but it was a poor move
15. I too would warn against the weight; at least with two single bags you can carry them together or separate them as required. I was amazed at just heavy the double bag was when filled with instruments. I sold mine on pretty quickly. Try before you buy would be my thoughts.
16. I too had bad experiences with Silverstone - he tends to deliver (eventually) but the customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. Hence the threads on here, of which WoT posted a few links
17. Purely as a point of interest 1976 was something of a transitional year at Fender (change of serial number position etc) and because it was the Bi-centenary year the 76s are always of interest to collectors. I too can confirm the F was only on the Jazz basses and P-basses are always plain. Great picture too btw
18. I loved mine but it got sidelined when I started playing vintage gear. It was probably the best modern reissue I've owned. Very chunky neck and I know some feel they need the contours you get from '54 onwards but I liked mine. Sold now and someone got an awesome bass. Don't think I'd buy again as my GAS days have been behind me for a while now
19. Looks great. I've always wanted a 1973 as it's my birth year. I'm currently 3 yrs off but unlikely to get any closer. Still we can dream
20. I've always had an interest in an 8 string and like the YouTube clips (cheers). Personally I think some bands only notice when you mess up so I wouldn't take it so hard. It does grate sometimes though
21. The Japanese Fenders are nearly always exceptional if you get a chance to come across one. Personally if I was playing funk I'd lean towards a Jazz purely because they cut through a little more but there are plenty of examples of people doing that on P-basses. I'm a life long Fender player and currently play a Jazz although I'm probably more associated with Precisions. I'd also echo the comments about trying stuff out live rather than buying online. With your budget I'd also be looking at a day trip somewhere so you can try a few.
Hi i'm growing an interest in fender basses.I always considered them an old mans guitar when i was younger
Just a thought but is it possible that you've just become an old man!?!
22. This year it seems to be my 1976 Bitsa Jazz bass
23.
Tim, you are virtually half the man I saw at the Half Moon in Putney ... in a good way!
Nearly 3 stone lost this year, slowly through just regulating what I eat and, I'm embarrassed to say, not sitting around on Basschat all night! I post less but definitely have a lot more energy... should come with a health warning!
24. Sunday week (13th), it's a lunchtime show but I can't find the details so I'll have to get back to you... it was The Donkey last time & I know it was a new venue this time around
25. Having dropped a bunch of weight this year (eating less & exercising more, incredibly) here's me at soundcheck yesterday. Say it with flowers! And onstage
