1. I've played a couple of Stagg ones and the quality is right up there. I've only played a couple of other brands - both a lot more than the Stagg but neither played as well.
2. Wouldn't it be amazing if this subject had never come up!? I will buck the trend here and say the tonal difference is so minimal... we're talking different shades of the same colour. I can play the two fingerboards and hear the difference but personally (& I appreciate there must be breeds of dog that will say otherwise) I can't tell what the fretboard is when I listen to a recording! I used to favour maple exclusively, I then had a rosewood kick. Then I bought an Ebony board... now I've learnt that each & every bass has it's plus points. It's no longer the deal clencher it used to be
3. I must confess it's the kind of question that will get you loads of different answers. So sticking my oar in, Flats are more old school tone compared to the brighter sound of roundwounds. If you like older music or play fretless they are definitely worth trying. I wish I'd taken the plunge about 10yrs before I did! I know it's been said before but...
just wondering what the main difference is between the flat wound strings to the normal strings
Flats are the norm in my World too!
4. I've had my (MIJ) one since 1989, they are just great. I played a couple of the MIM ones & they've kept the quality control up high. This is a real steal of a bargain for someone
5. Looking at the first picture I thought funky might refer to the smell!?!
6.
Is that one of the isobaric cabs? What's it like?
I'm happy which is why I downsized. 600w so louder than the OBC115 by 100w. It holds it's own & all the guys in my band talk about it so it's achieved it's aims for me. Heavier than it looks because of the speaker configuration but as you can see I've flight cased mine and I'm managing just fine
7. Welcome to Basschat It is an amazing forum as you say & does take a few days to get your head around all that is going on here
8. I missed the boat with Grant so these are still available for a cheeky Sunday night bump
9. I have some Dimarzios in my 70s Jazz & that thing roars! My P-basses tend to have the SPB1's - more trad sounding but a definite step up from stock. I think you'd do well out of an SPB3 if the Dimarzios weren't to happen (it sounds like they will though)
10. We had a van nicked one night after a gig in Tunbridge Wells. It takes the edge off a good show but life goes on. There are some idiots out there
11. Spinal Tap's Derek Small once said you need to play open strings as it leaves your left hand free to punch the air. Some of you must feel pretty stupid having posted what you have right now!
12. I'm pretty much exclusively using my Orange rig right now
13. Pablo bought my Fender Bassman head. Good comms, arranged quickly with no problems whatsoever. Didn't know until reading this you'd be around since Bassworld - I was Tim73 in those days, it all comes back now! Enjoy the head
14. I was distracted by the YouTube comment; Listening to Bauhaus is kind of like getting beaten up by a ghost made of broken glass, and enjoying the experience. Those Goths were a funny lot!
15. I have the same set up minus the OBC115 which is on my GAS list...in fact it is my GAS list!
16. I have a Facebook account & the link doesn't work!?!
17. Still very much available & sorry leftyalex, I completely didn't spot your post. I'm open to very sensible offers. Bump for anyone else (I assume I was too late for leftyalex)
18. covers vs originals bands aside (& I'm not a covers band player) it's about enjoyment so you do kinda answer your own query in this post Best of luck

Jazz

Mine's a bitsa; a 1976 Precision neck (fretted old fretless ebony) with a Japanese body & some vintage Dimarzios. Love it
20. Just a standard set of regular roundwounds (Elites). Only you can answer that. They take a while coming through & I had to chase mine.
21.
Ha ha, 40 downloads now
I can only assume people download it, print it off, roll it up, put tape on the end & stick it in their upright basses; you've already said this method isn't working so they don't post. Move along people, there is nothing to see
22.
What is it about the really early P or J basses that makes them so desirable? I've never understood it personally, craftsmanship and quality has improved a lot since then, what makes them so special to play? I can appreciate the age of them, but I don't see that it specifically makes them a better instrument.
Mojo. (see Austin Powers). If people don't get it, fine. We've all got different tastes. I know a lot of players who are delighted with modern gear I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Good luck to them, pleased they are happy. For me my tastes in music are in a bit of a timewarp so it stands to reason I'd want the type of kit that was used in that era. I'm sure if those players were around now they'd be using the latest gear. But they weren't so it comes around full circle to my first point.
23. I'd start with 1) an early 50s P-bass. Just to say I'd played one. I don't think it warrants anymore explanation. then 2) an early 60s Jazz. Similar reasoning really. 3) An Ampeg AUB1 so I can relive my Rick Danko fantasy 4) An Epiphone Rivoli to bring a little bit of 60s beat pop into the mix 5) As tempted as I am to say a T-bird or a Ricky, I too will add the Burns Bison to my list. Any bass with a tone setting called Wild Dog really needs to be included
24. Been there, Usually drink is involved. It's worse when it isn't a factor!
