1.
Bassic cables from forumite OBBM. http://www.bassic-bits.co.uk/
I'm another one for Bassic cables. The Chord Company too. I'd avoid the Fender Deluxe leads. They look great but mine both packed up inside of 18 months and couldn't be repaired.
2. Interesting that he first mentions "Four extra screw holes have been drilled behind the bridge" before mentioning the Swiss Cheese effect.

4. I thought this one summed up 1973 pretty well
5. We do a lot of pub gigs as an originals band and get paid. It's like chris_b said, if you come across as fun but professional I don't think it matters. Obviously we're not the band to see if you want to hear all the greats but if people like a well rehearsed pro band who put on a good show, we can absolutely deliver on that. Have fun & good luck
6. I'd rather the listings were left, especially as the mods quite rightly aren't deleting stuff. Just an edit to say "Withdrawn" or "Sold" rather than a re-writing of history. It never happened! I've always thought people do it mainly because they've seen others do it rather than any exciting other reason.
What is the relevance of the for sale price anyway? Everything I've bought and sold as been for a different amount to the initial post price.
It serves as a guide to potential sellers wanting to sell. Most of my sales go for slightly less than asking price but then there is no harm in listing with a similar asking price that that seller probably won't get either. We're normally talking £20 less not hundreds of pounds. I find it reall useful if I was selling a certain piece of kit just to gauge what the going rate might be. It's a ball park figure and nothing more.
7. Welcome. It's so much nicer with an introduction!
8. I've done a couple and had a lot of fun with them. Stripping the paint was a real bonding moment and I did all but 2 gigs last year on a bass I put together - it really is a strong bond! I think you are right to get the neck right. It's important. I went all Fender parts and sourced a lot through Basschat.
9. I don't think I've ever seen a positive post about Music Ground here on Basschat
10. My Watford Valves order arrived today. They are great but they don't tell you the postage rates and you have to add VAT. It's not horrendous but my £40 order was £52. They are the best company I know of so would use them again.
11. I like Tribute bands. The only one I've seen who I have issues with is the Bootleg Beatles and everyone else says they are great so I assume I can use the classic break up line "It's not you, it's me!" I can't even put my finger on what I don't like with them. It might be that they do the costume changes rather than stick with one era. But it's just a personal view. The Counterfit Stones were great when I saw them. I do hate the way such issues become covers bands vs tribute bands vs originals bands. Yes, some originals bands aren't so original (& I would say like BigRedX this is always my personal preference), some covers bands aren't so hot and some tribute bands don't help the cause. Ultimately there are good and bad examples of each and on that note it is time to move on. I can see myself being in a Tribute band at some stage in the future purely as it is one musical experience I'm yet to have.
12. My 1976 Jazz bass is a fretted Ebony board. It started out fretless and a previous owner did the honours. The dot markers are of course over the frets and not between frets which took an adjustment but it feels just great and sounds awesome I wish ebony was used more although I do like maple and rosewood too
13.
From such beginnings forums are born
Oh absolutely & long may that be the case. The trick is though is not to get too upset when everybody else doesn't have the same influences and use the same gear as you. How boring would it be if we all agreed all the time?
14. Another vote for Bandcamp. Have a Facebook page, have our own page too but it is all there to plug Bandcamp. Bandcamp actually gets hits and sales too which is a bonus
15. Whilst I agree with the original reply, go for one with a bigger body and decent soundhole as that will kick out the volume a lot more. I had an old Aria that was huge and that sounded fine with an acoustic guitar. I say "old Aria", I'm only going back 7yrs and I think Aria still do a large bodied acoustic bass.
16. I can tell you Fender, Hofner & Rotosound all have silks. Just in case nobody replies and you want to know who to avoid. Medium or long scale will all go on a standard Fender Jazz or P bass just fine. Most packets will state "will suit 32" - 34" scale" or similar which is what you want. Relatively bright, hmmmn. Actually I find flats still a bit bright when first on but that's usually gone after a gig or two.
17. It does look good but I personally really struggle with the online format. I assume younger people get on better with it?
18. I'm probably guilty of going through the same few scales repeatedly when I should be stretching myself. Arpeggios is a good idea and I might start doing those
19.
I like the the first letter of this months issue. A guy has written in about the Bassically Speaking feature, which he likes, but complains about what appears to be a tremendous amout of hate about 5 string basses from a lot of the featured bassists. He also points out that some of them, afer dissing 5 strings then go on to say how they detune. I have read quite a few of these features and must agree with him. Some of them really make a point of it.
I agree to a point. He then kind of blew his arguement for me a little by implying that 4 string bassists were just trying to look cool and pose. Each to their own I say. I've nothing against 5 stringers, they just ain't for me. Musicians often talk rubbish so I don't know why he was that bothered by a few people sounding off. I certainly wouldn't write in just because a musician said something a bit silly. Re the top of this page my email was ignored by BGM. I phoned and emailed again and only then did they acknowledge the lacklustre response. Not a massive problem but a bit irratating. All sorted now
20. Hmmmn, I must get into pick playing more. Heavy flats with foam is basically my style & I love that tone
21. I like the look of it. Basically a copy of the Club bass. If everyone wants it, why haven't they bid?
22. If I was playing in a funtion band I'd probably use a P-bass but from what you are saying Chris I'd lean towards a Music Man type bass.
23. Most basses tend to come with roundwound strings in a standard gauge. If you are happy with that set up, that is what to ask for. I remember being challenged in my teens by shop staff about whether I wanted roundwound or flatwound and being made to feel stupid because I didn't know. It wasn't a helpful attitude at the time & I agree by simply asking a few simple questions about people's style & influences you can usually find the right string.
24.
I like the flight case, brought orange or DIYed ?
Bought Orange, custom made for me
