1. Whilst I agree with the original reply, go for one with a bigger body and decent soundhole as that will kick out the volume a lot more. I had an old Aria that was huge and that sounded fine with an acoustic guitar. I say "old Aria", I'm only going back 7yrs and I think Aria still do a large bodied acoustic bass.
2. I can tell you Fender, Hofner & Rotosound all have silks. Just in case nobody replies and you want to know who to avoid. Medium or long scale will all go on a standard Fender Jazz or P bass just fine. Most packets will state "will suit 32" - 34" scale" or similar which is what you want. Relatively bright, hmmmn. Actually I find flats still a bit bright when first on but that's usually gone after a gig or two.
3. It does look good but I personally really struggle with the online format. I assume younger people get on better with it?
4. I'm probably guilty of going through the same few scales repeatedly when I should be stretching myself. Arpeggios is a good idea and I might start doing those
5.
I like the the first letter of this months issue. A guy has written in about the Bassically Speaking feature, which he likes, but complains about what appears to be a tremendous amout of hate about 5 string basses from a lot of the featured bassists. He also points out that some of them, afer dissing 5 strings then go on to say how they detune. I have read quite a few of these features and must agree with him. Some of them really make a point of it.
I agree to a point. He then kind of blew his arguement for me a little by implying that 4 string bassists were just trying to look cool and pose. Each to their own I say. I've nothing against 5 stringers, they just ain't for me. Musicians often talk rubbish so I don't know why he was that bothered by a few people sounding off. I certainly wouldn't write in just because a musician said something a bit silly. Re the top of this page my email was ignored by BGM. I phoned and emailed again and only then did they acknowledge the lacklustre response. Not a massive problem but a bit irratating. All sorted now
6. Hmmmn, I must get into pick playing more. Heavy flats with foam is basically my style & I love that tone
7. I like the look of it. Basically a copy of the Club bass. If everyone wants it, why haven't they bid?
8. Welcome back
9. If I was playing in a funtion band I'd probably use a P-bass but from what you are saying Chris I'd lean towards a Music Man type bass.
10. Most basses tend to come with roundwound strings in a standard gauge. If you are happy with that set up, that is what to ask for. I remember being challenged in my teens by shop staff about whether I wanted roundwound or flatwound and being made to feel stupid because I didn't know. It wasn't a helpful attitude at the time & I agree by simply asking a few simple questions about people's style & influences you can usually find the right string.
11.
I like the flight case, brought orange or DIYed ?
Bought Orange, custom made for me
12. I'm an avid fan of regular set ups & funny thing, my basses tend to stay in tune! My mandolin player always goes out of tune & his mandolin plays very badly. I have the same model - a lesson to be learnt I think!
13. We've had threads showing off black basses, white basses, Wal basses & pretty much everything else. I'm not aware of one celebrating the humble sunburst. So in a bid to get a thread on Sunbursts started, here are mine; from left to right we have a Resonator Bass (from China via Texas!?), a Hofner Verithin Bass, a Hofner Beatle Bass, my original 80s Precision & a 70s parts Jazz bass. I didn't reallise I'd become such a sunburst fan! What you got? Show 'em here!
14. It's what YouTube is for. I check out bands I might like & check to see the linked videos. I've found a bunch of new bands that way
15. It is the wrong forum but I'm sure one of the mods will move it for you. I too have a set of nicely yellowing vintage dimarzios in my 70s Jazz. Not sure of the value but it won't be mega bucks. I'm very happy with the tone I get too. Great pickups.
16. Forgot to mention playing it with a strap, it's very well balanced.
Looks very nice. Where are they made?
They are Chinese but with German pickups.
17. In quite an unusual departure from my usual Fenders I ordered a Hofner Verithin Bass from my local shop. At £550 it was as cheap as the best online price so I took the plunge & collected it today. These don't seem to be talked about much. When it comes to Hofners it seems to be the Beatle Bass that gets all the attention with the Club bass a distant second. My initial thoughts were it looked amazing. Nice & light. The block inlays are amazing & no photo does them justice. It's short scale but doesn't feel like it is, perhaps due to the body size. In pictures the tuners look a bit substandard but in reality are sturdy and look the business. It actually feels and looks very vintage in a much more genuine way than a lot of other reissues. I had it restrung with flats. Plugging it in it immediately smacks of the 60s. Two volumes & two tones, one for each pickup. When I played with a pick (I'm mainly fingers) I was immediately transported back to 1967! I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of tonal variation. I can't wait to use it properly, be it live or recording. Only downside, no case & Hofner don't do one yet.
18. The first chip is gutting, the second is annoying and the third is instant mojo. I still have my late 80s MIJ P-bass and I love every dink now

I have a Guitool with all the allen keys, string cutters etc. I also have a towel, a stand, postcards (with song prompts written on them), spare leads, spare strings, picks (not that I use them) and a capo (ditto - makes more sense if you know Adam from my band!)
20. I like bands to look the part personally and you can always get changed at the venue! A few years ago I did a country show and was too embarassed to stop at the local cashpoint as I looked like Colt Severs! Ultimately you should only wear stuff you are comfortable in or you will look silly. My band has 2 members who tend to dress fairly normally and 3 posers - of which I am one! We tend to dress "rock n roll" anyway which as the only member not yet in his 40s we're probably old enough to ought to know better
21. I do rather feel a lot of money can be spent trying to replicate a sound that can only really be gotten from the product you are trying to sound like. I'm sure there are Ampeg-esque tones with lots of pedals and other makes but for a real Ampeg tone you do really need Ampeg. And I don't wish this to sound like an Ampeg Elitist post, the same applies if trying to get a Vox tone or a Fender tone etc. That said I too have heard good things about TC RH450/Classic tones. I guess it depends on how good your ear is and how much you are willing to compromise.
22. D'oh! Gutted. At least he knows you could be up for it should things change in the future
23. Pleased to hear it went well. I think the advice here is pretty much bang on and was what I was thinking when I clicked the link. If your relaxed but keen, enjoy it and keep it fairly simple you've won at least 90% of the battle. Well done
24. It saddens me to say I know them all...must get another hobby!
