Great musician, I can't fault his influence on so many etc but his sound is just not to my taste. I haven't given up on the idea of exploring his playing further and may revisit him in a few years but not right now. I don't think you can force stuff. I like The Clash and I like Bob Dylan but I rarely feel like listening to both on the same day.

I think the majority of your budget should be your amp. I play in a fairly quiet band and I wouldn't like to have less than 100w. There are many threads here stating you need more but 100w is plenty. You'd be working a 75w amp quite hard. Don't worry about strings, strap, case etc. Some shops throw stuff in & you can always pick up trimmings at a later date. My local shop does decent budget basses and most basses these days with a proper set up (this is when a bass is adjusted to play at it's best and for beginners best left to your local shop) play well. I'm a big fan of supporting your local small music shop so best of luck for tomorrow.

I too prefer simplicity on both my bass [b]and[/b] my amp but fair play to those who don't. I do use the volume & tone a lot on my P-basses having pretty much ignored them until about 3yrs ago

I used to play a lot of Epiphones that famously suffer from neck dive. I can honestly say it was never something that bothered me. Then again my style doesn't include a lot of punching my left fist in the air so it shouldn't cause me too many problems

I'm usually very happy with my gear. Any changes are usually down to just fancying a change and the thrill of the chase. I spent years as a struggling (skint!) musician so I see nothing wrong with spending my money on stuff I like. Things get sold on & nobody can knock recycling Stuff stays around long enough to get fair use. I'd be more concerned if I had a new bit of gear at every gig without giving it a proper chance

As a lifelong Fender fan I couldn't wait to try one out when they came out a few years back. The one I tried was enough to put me off. Fender do nice bass amps but there are better alternatives out there in the Rumble's range

Or those tweed covered Fender Bassman combos? Has the look & tone

Most of the acts have CDs on Amazon for about £3 so once you have listened to a few tracks on the compilations you can go from there. Most of the comps are pretty good.

I had a [b]major[/b] culling last year & the collection was more than halved. I bought a cheeky little Hofner this month though and I've been thinking about a couple of other cheap basses so how long it lasts is a mute point. I do think it'll stay at much less but whether people stick to what they initially limit themselves too is another thing

My Hofner bass was about 48hrs tops.
