1. Keep it simple means "keep it simple". It doesn't mean "Only play root notes" and it is not a mandate to be boring. I'm increasingly amazed by fantastic basslines which inspire me to work them out... resulting in me thinking "is that all he was doing?" D'oh!
2. Um, belated greetings then
3. I like it. He's wrecked its resale value but easy enough to rectify if not to your tastes. I've stripped 2 70s basses but stopped short of a blue wood stain
4.
I totally agree on the dependency on the music but i always feel there is a natural discrimination against pick wielders..
Nah, only the ones who smell of cheese! There is a natural discrimination against bass players, there is a natural discrimination against pick wielders and then there are those who just shut up and play
5.
Initially it's the aesthetics.
A point not stated enough. Of course this is 100% true. We all focus on what occurs afterwards
6. Fingers. Pick. Thumb. Whatever gets you through the night
7.
Clip of the band using one, wonder if it is the same one in the photo ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_hsp4SBwO4
It's not. I thought that too but it belonged to Dylan's bassist at the time Harvey Brooks. A great shot and I have a copy of this photo hanging up in my living room I also have a shot of Danko using his one with the Band too. I love it!
8. Please keep the anti-cat comments off the board or I'll report you to Chairman Meow! http://obeythekitty.blogspot.com/ On an unrelated point can nobody show this thread to my wife?
9. Welcome I used to own one of those Epiphone Flying V basses too. Great fun
10. Popular fashions aside I have always had an unhealthy interest in the 1970s. For me owning a 70s Fender is about buying into my childhood in a way. I love my 70s Fenders and they are genuinely good basses. I own a couple of modern basses (reissues - just my tastes) as well but my musical tastes are very much with older acts. I like retro stylings, be it genuine or recreated.
They're considered "vintage" now because enough time has passed?
Vintage technically is 25yrs which frightenly means 1986 is keeping it old school. Don't sound right does it?
Enormous weight has become fashionable again?
Whilst I strongly suspect the comment is meant in a fairly lighthearted way, Basschat does seem to struggle having a thread on 70s Fenders without somebody popping up to say something like "watch the weights". The cynic in me wonders if there must have been a couple of occasions when the comment has been made by people who haven't actually ever played one in the same way that some people can talk for hours at parties about the clutch on a Ford Fiesta having never actually driven one! (& HJ I know you know your stuff more than that so just make the point - please don't think I'm having a pop at you personally). For the record I've owned 4 70s Fenders and played a fair few more. Only one of mine is a tad on the heavy side, all the others have been medium to fairly lightweight. Perhaps I've been lucky which leads me onto my next point...
Of course, the usual caveat applies: There's dogs and diamonds in any era.
Absolutely
11. In a way though it offers a band credibility when it's fan footage. We had a couple of videos that I just looked for but the fan has removed us... must have lost our credibility!?
12. I think it depends on the QC set by each individual band. We only use the better venues we play and our camera is pretty good. Others set the bar lower (some granted really go all out with multi camera angles etc which we've always stopped short at).
13.
So what was the main reason you moved it on ?
It was a casualty of a stage in my life where I started branching out onto other instruments. Suddenly I wasn't playing bass very much so started selling kit off. It was the last bass to go and one of only a couple that I occasionally regret.
14. Iloved mine but did sell it on a few years ago. I was used to Precisions but did learn to adapt
i found it got more of it's 'own sound' when i strung it with flatwounds.
I wish I'd tried this back when I had mine
15. I expect they're not players so easily forgiven
16. No, it's not in the distance! Certainly sounds up close!
17. Sounds nice enough but a little too much of a twist on the traditional for my tastes. I do like the big logo though
18. Looking good I do like the 4005's
19. Awesome clip! I must get some Argent. I loved The Zombies & nice to see John Denver introducing this
