1. Yep, these were EVERYWHERE in the late 80s. And not very good if memory serves me correctly.
2. It came up earlier in the month on Basschat & most of us were a bit disappointed
3. It does sound a bit scam like. The pics look pretty legit to me without taking the guitar apart. He lists an awful lot of faults? Surely if it was that bad he'd have picked up on it straight away?
4.
Nice bass, seems a good price. Does anyone know if that was a colour option or could it possibly be a refin?
I've seen that colour on a few early 80s P bass Specials.
5. Immaculate versions of the 77-78 era are going for £2k and are actually selling even in this current financial climate. We're talking NOS type condition with original till receipts, ashtrays & case etc. So I think it would be unwise to guess a price without pictures and a fair bit more info. A standard ish price seems to be £1200 - £1500 right now but this doesn't factor in resprays, replaced pots, replaced parts, general condition etc. So they can wind up going for as low as £800 as Stinson suggests and looking at the original post is does suggest that this may be leaning towards needing TLC rather than looking like it's just come out the shop. So detailed pics and a bit of history on the instrument and we can probably give you a much closer idea of what it is actually worth
6. I like the pup like that & it looks alright to me (although I wouldn't buy one on the grounds that I'm a similar age to, well, Mark Hoppus himself actually!?! Then I saw the bit that said "Mark Hoppus signature Jazz Bass with gig bag: £766.80." A second hand original one normally goes for £300. Say no more
7. We played in Bristol last night. We had our dep drummer who incredibly did a 1 1/2hr set of original material off the back of 3 rehearsals. He only managed about 3 mistakes which he covered to the extent that nobody in the crowd would have known. Very impressed. A photographer was there who took some amazing pictures last time we played there & he said to me afterwards that he'd never seen a bass player so animated as me. I hope that's good?!
8. I must confess that big black headstock logo would be my default logo of choice. And yeah, overall it is thumbs up from me
9.
For 'comments' read hagiography!
Oh absolutely! And I suspect millions of other players get away with similar & worse all the time
10.
Absolutely. I would say this is a lesson from a master on how to get away with a bum note.
And nobody in the 5 pages of YouTube comments picked up on it so I'd say it was a fairly good lesson
11. but they are out of stock and I just can't wait
12.
Burrito - you're definitely coming from the same place as me style-wise and if you're finding the Terror 500 does retro without being too rock, then that's an important recommendation. I will try one, that's a definite.
It didn't click at the time but you were the Basschatter who commented on my band's thread about playing pedal steel. I mentioned this tentatively to the boys at last weeks gig and there was definite interest. I will PM you nearer the time but we're at the Troubadour next month and I'd like you to come down and possible sit in on some of those Charlie Spencer tunes. You can then at least see / hear the Terror head in action, if nothing else. I hear you on the look at Americana shows. Although not an LED or flashing, the Terror does have a bright Orange light on it but you could take the bulb out - a job that would take you about 15 secs. I can think of a few acts I've played with where had I shown up with modern looking gear I would have been ridiculed. I once mentioned that a EUB would be easier to transport than a full upright bass and got told I'd be sacked if I showed up with one! (my sarcastic reply was "calm down, they do them in different colours!"). The reality is that gear does have to be fit for purpose and whilst I am sure there are exceptions to every rule I can't imagine too many BC Rich Warlock players playing with traditional English Folk bands. And there is enough good quality kit out there for players to factor in looks and still get a good bit of kit.
13.
No one interested?? Thought there would be loads of interest in this.
There were a LOT of lurkers when I first clicked on this thread. Whilst I'm sure people can't see this as anything other than a serious offer I think it's a case of hanging on to see who the other bands on the bill are & who the charity is. We could just about manage about 300 but we'd really have to take a hit and pull out the stops. And we wouldn't even entertain that unless we knew exactly what we were doing it for & getting ourselves into. Shepherds Bush would be amazing but I've played other (smaller) world famous London venues like The Marquee and The Troubadour where the stakes have been a lot lower. I only offer my thoughts as you raise the question / point and hope it's not seen as me being in any way antagonistic. I'm sure there are a lot of bassists here who are in acts that could pull 300 easier and equally a fair few more who simply wouldn't be able to get 300 in the first place but this is just my perspective on why I'm not chewing my arm off to do it at this stage.
14. Oops, didn't realise my "naughty word" would get edited. Sorry about that. Next time I'll use "fool"
15. I have some from Vistaprint. They look cool as anything but I rarely give them out! Mine are brown and have an upright bass on them with a link to my personal MySpace and a list of instruments I play / styles I do. I added my address and mobile. Possibly less is more here as I have it all on there - had it just been a contact number and no address I'd hand them out more readily
16. D'oh! I'm being thick here! You mean 50 posts & you can post in that thread? I read it as you could only post 50 times in that section I'm such a phallus
17.
Bass Xciter.
This is what I have been considering
18. Could there be a limit just for the newer members? I love that section of BC and have posted a few links in there - actually never for my EBay sales but more to comment on stuff that I find of interest. I have no idea how close to 50 I am (probably only 4 - D'Oh!) but would hate to not be able to post new threads. However I can see and understand the problem so if it's a sacrifice that has to be made, so be it.
19. Bump for Bristol, tomorrow night (Thursday) at The Prom on Gloucester Rd
20. Welcome Grant You've done well with the replies - It don't normally get this busy!
21. I have to say you sound like me! I play flatwound P basses (foam under the bridge anyone?) and love all things retro, country, Americana etc. I too had the hesitations about Orange Terror but have taken the plunge. I'm not a big "Rock" guy and I'm happy to report that these do retro very well. I know you can get the rock sound but with your bass this amp really lets the bass do the talking. So if your bass is set up with flats etc, you'll get that vintage P thump and it won't suddenly make you Emo! Danko? Carol Kaye? These are absolutely my reference points too Away from that though Ampeg are great, so are those tweed Fender Bassman combos. I also have a vintage 1978 Fender Bassman head but to be honest the lightweight Orange Terror head is getting more use at the moment.
22.
also WHO wants a double neck bass/6 string
Retro posers (me!) with strong backs (not me!)
