1. Hi Chutz - I'm the other way around, I play bass but can play some mandolin too Welcome
2.
I`ve got a Black Crowes dvd called Cabin Fever and although I haven`t played it in a while, I`m sure that the bass player plays a similar bass on a few of the tracks.
Sven Pippin who replaced Johnny Colt does indeed sometimes use one
3.
I've just come back from Peter Cook's having just purchased for myself a Fender gig bag for my Jazz and without doubt certainly the nicest of people to deal with.
I've been using them on and off for the last 15yrs. A bit out the way but worth it as the instruments are always well set up and the staff are always polite, professional & friendly.
4. The Epiphones I played & owned a few years ago were usually pretty good. The violin bass was about the only one I didn't own during the height of my GAS
And wasn't there some band in the '60s where the bassist played one of these? Can't remember the name of the band ... but maybe they were from Liverpool?
Gerry & the Pacemakers
5. Nice one £100 sounds good to me if you weren't expecting anything.
6. I'm not a big pick player these days but 60s bass legend Carol Kaye recently sent me some pics that I really like. I think anyone who writes to her or orders from her site gets sent a couple.
7. And if you haven't seen that one before....
8. I can certainly see sense in just using a Precision. I've different experiences with acoustic bass guitars & I've tried some really nice sounding ones. The bigger bodied ones tend to sound better. Personally I have an upright bass but I also have a resonator bass that I use when I just want to throw something in a case & jump on a train. Originally it sounded awful but I've strung it with flats and it now has a certain charm.
9. I have two rigs. The main method is small head / cab in padded covers with a hard cased bass and a spares bag in a car. However there have been a couple of London gigs where I have taken the train. I also have a flight cased rig that only goes out in a van when we hire one to go away. It's also worth mentioning I can get my upright bass in the car but with very little room for anything else.
10. As you've done it, I'd go for an upgraded part like Bone or Graphite. It still shouldn't cost more than a tenner plus whatever the shop charge you to fit it. You can have a go youself but if it's your first time on your favourite bass I'd personally opt for getting it done professionally. You could always get a pro set up at the same time for a bit extra.
11. I broke my nut on my only Fender Precision a few years ago. It's a common problem and a quick fix. It shouldn't cost too much in your local shop to repair if you are unsure about carrying out the repair yourself. Mine is still going strong 16yrs later!
12. I really struggled with them back in the 80s but over the last 10yrs or so I've developed a respect for them. I think Morrisey's voice put me off originally but it grew on me.
13.
So - making a short story longer and more boring - the stock strings are a crippler to the sound you CAN get out of the VM-Jazz - and if you try something with some lower backbone to them, you'll be mucho happier with the sounds you hear from the Squier.
I agree that a different set of strings can make the world of difference. It's the first thing I do these days is take the stock strings off and put some heavy flatwounds on... but that's just my tastes. A decent / different string will make a lot more difference to the tone compared to considering whether a fretboard is made of maple or rosewood. Depending on how great your musical ear is most bass players can't hear anything more than the subtlest of differences (if any) to the tone when comparing fretboards
14. I don't have a strong preference, it depends on the vibe of the finished bass. I used to insist on maple fretboards until about 7yrs ago. Now most of my basses are rosewood boards but I still have a lot of fun with the maple fretboarded ones I've still got. Equally I've had everything from Ash to Alder to Basswood bodies and it really depends on the individual bass.
15. I have no strong opinions on it. Personally I have always preferred owning a physical product so I'm not a huge fan of downloading anyway. When I have done it I have used Itunes and more recently Amazon downloads. If I want to hear a track I don't wish to buy I use Spotify if it is not on YouTube. At the risk of sounding like my Dad, I honestly wouldn't know how to illegally download any music Back in the day I taped a few songs / albums (I have a semi ironic "Home Taping is Killing Music" sticker on my bass case) but again I've always liked to own the originals. The record industry must love me!
As the OP says, how do they know which songs are being played by cover bands? I've never been asked for a set list.
I think it depends on the venue. We have been asked at a few of the bigger venues we play to fill out PRS forms but generally it doesn't happen or get properly monitored. I don't think it is economical to do every single pub band at every pub gig.

17. Hi Brad - Welcome to the forum
18.
Subscription to BGM, excellent! Quite fancy that Fender Bass manual, what kind of stuff does it cover?
I too got a subscription to BGM but from my parents. That Fender Bass manual is great. It's a lot of pretty obvious stuff but loads of great photos and worth owning if you like Fenders. My wife usually does me proud bass wise every year but this year it all came a bit earlier due to a decent discount code from soundslive - so this year it was the Orange Terror 500 head.
