Playing fingerstyle I had to have mine on about 5 volume and 2/3 for gain just in rehearsal but then I have a lighter touch. So I can understand it a bit more than I thought.

Thanks for all the replies so far. Two added complications for you - Firstly I wouldn't want to spend more than £150 second hand on a pedal and secondly I'm not sure overdrive would suit what we do. Remember we fit in with Americana / Alt.folk so I'm looking at subtle embellishments rather than transforming a tone. Please do keep them coming. I've googled playing videos of the suggestions so far and there are no bad ideas at the moment.

I used to own one last time around when they did that as a limited edition model a few years back.

I've been considering getting a small pedal board back up together again. I'm quite happy with my tone as it stands so I guess it's really just to experiment a little rather than transform my sound. I recently picked up a tuner pedal again and I have a compressor (Aphex Punch Factory). I probably only want one more pedal, two at most and wanted some ideas. To give you an idea of my tone / style, I play flatwound strung Fenders (mainly Precisions with foam under the bridge) through an Orange terror mini rig (SP210 cab) or a 1978 Bassman head into a 115E Ampeg cab. Musically we play Americana so somewhere between Dylan to the Stones via Country rock and a little bit of folk rock. I like a lot of 60s / 70s tones and am less into modern active-y sounding basses. I know very little about effects as I usually wind up not using them but we've definitely got some players on here who really know their stuff. So what would you recommend?

I also acquired mine recently with the 15% discount code at soundslive. I took it to rehearsal last night & blew my bandmates away. It descended into Orange-y jokes ("It's too orangey for crows" - a comment presumably lost on anyone under 25?) but the thing ruled. I too am toying with the idea of selling my bigger cabs but I'd still like a big Orange cab for the bigger shows. Oh & mine is the SP210 as opposed to the SP212. Enjoy

We are a 5 piece that can go out as a four piece band, a trio, a duo or a solo act singer. Plus we have an occasional 6th member on keyboards. We use a dep drummer who has learnt our set with us and he just gets paid a bit extra if we call on him. Luckily in my current job I am always available so there is no dep bassist but I gather one bassist did offer. As a personal view I find we lack something as a 4 piece more than we do as a 3 piece. Funny that.

I don't sell on many of my Precisions but here's a couple that I sadly let go or I'd have had a silly amount. This was my 2006 Anniversary Precision that is still on Basschat. A VM Squier that again is still on Basschat and finally I've recently been regretting this one going since seeing a very cool picture of Klaus Voormann with one. This is a 2005/6 (memory is hazy) CIJ Blue Flower 54 RI. Again I believe this is still on Basschat although has again been sold on since I sold it.

OK first up is my 70s range; from left to right; first up my mainly 70s bitsa Bass, then my 1978 all original Precision and then my 1979 Precision. I stripped the left & right ones myself Next up we have my 2009 MIJ 51 RI Precision. It's a crime I don't play this one more but I can't bring myself to sell this. Then it's my original This is a 57RI MIJ from 1989 that I switched the neck to a 1993 62RI. It's a bit trigger's broom again here as I've also changed the scratchplate and the pickup too.

It's a bit harder / more noticeable on a Jazz for me for some reason but the Precisions cause me no issues whatsoever

My 1978 Fender Precision bass has the original receipt. It was £254 on November 27th 1978 and the original buyer paid cash. Edit - According to the Bank of England website my bass would now cost £1086.36 as of 2009.

Very cool I have a leather telecaster which is slightly less subtle but it was made in the US for me (so not my hard work)

I'd add that there are a lot of beautifully set up great playing basses anyway. You could get a great one here on Basschat for half that money

Here are two formally black 1970s Fenders that I have stripped You can be unlucky, it depends on the bass & there is no real way of telling what you will get. I'd avoid cheaper basses personally. Tonally, the difference is minimal but you really bond with the instrument doing it & I found it very satisfying.
