1.
Which, according to dollartimes.com, is worth about $1727.59 in 2010. Interesting Si
This is what I was wondering when I saw this post. My folks had a mortgage for £2k in 1970. It's easy to forget about inflation. My 1978 Fender Precision bass has the original receipt. It was £254 on November 27th 1978 and the original buyer paid cash. Edit - According to the Bank of England website my bass would now cost £1086.36 as of 2009.
2.
It might be worth me getting a bass with a pickup right next to the neck..... but I'm not sure because I can cope just fine with basses that don't have this.
Or a thumb rest positioned there. That's what I do
3. Very cool I have a leather telecaster which is slightly less subtle but it was made in the US for me (so not my hard work)
4. I'd add that there are a lot of beautifully set up great playing basses anyway. You could get a great one here on Basschat for half that money
5. Here are two formally black 1970s Fenders that I have stripped You can be unlucky, it depends on the bass & there is no real way of telling what you will get. I'd avoid cheaper basses personally. Tonally, the difference is minimal but you really bond with the instrument doing it & I found it very satisfying.
6.
The shops you mention are all good - though as you be doing a lot of travelling, I would phone first to check what's in stock.
Plus one. Also Basschat is good for decent P basses
7. Welcome to the forum
8.
Currently playing a Mex Fender Jazz, which I decided to cover in black reptile-print leather the other day for no good reason
Welcome Boris You must post pics of this in our Porn section. Sounds very, um, unique!
9. Edit - messed up quote (er, not done that before) I'll start again!
10. Hi Chutz - I'm the other way around, I play bass but can play some mandolin too Welcome
11.
I`ve got a Black Crowes dvd called Cabin Fever and although I haven`t played it in a while, I`m sure that the bass player plays a similar bass on a few of the tracks.
Sven Pippin who replaced Johnny Colt does indeed sometimes use one
12.
I've just come back from Peter Cook's having just purchased for myself a Fender gig bag for my Jazz and without doubt certainly the nicest of people to deal with.
I've been using them on and off for the last 15yrs. A bit out the way but worth it as the instruments are always well set up and the staff are always polite, professional & friendly.
13. The Epiphones I played & owned a few years ago were usually pretty good. The violin bass was about the only one I didn't own during the height of my GAS
And wasn't there some band in the '60s where the bassist played one of these? Can't remember the name of the band ... but maybe they were from Liverpool?
Gerry & the Pacemakers
14. Nice one £100 sounds good to me if you weren't expecting anything.
15. I'm not a big pick player these days but 60s bass legend Carol Kaye recently sent me some pics that I really like. I think anyone who writes to her or orders from her site gets sent a couple.
16. Don't drink more than 3 pints before going onstage

18. And if you haven't seen that one before....
19. I can certainly see sense in just using a Precision. I've different experiences with acoustic bass guitars & I've tried some really nice sounding ones. The bigger bodied ones tend to sound better. Personally I have an upright bass but I also have a resonator bass that I use when I just want to throw something in a case & jump on a train. Originally it sounded awful but I've strung it with flats and it now has a certain charm.
20. I have two rigs. The main method is small head / cab in padded covers with a hard cased bass and a spares bag in a car. However there have been a couple of London gigs where I have taken the train. I also have a flight cased rig that only goes out in a van when we hire one to go away. It's also worth mentioning I can get my upright bass in the car but with very little room for anything else.
21. As you've done it, I'd go for an upgraded part like Bone or Graphite. It still shouldn't cost more than a tenner plus whatever the shop charge you to fit it. You can have a go youself but if it's your first time on your favourite bass I'd personally opt for getting it done professionally. You could always get a pro set up at the same time for a bit extra.
22. I broke my nut on my only Fender Precision a few years ago. It's a common problem and a quick fix. It shouldn't cost too much in your local shop to repair if you are unsure about carrying out the repair yourself. Mine is still going strong 16yrs later!
