1. I really struggled with them back in the 80s but over the last 10yrs or so I've developed a respect for them. I think Morrisey's voice put me off originally but it grew on me.
2. Welcome to the forum
3.
So - making a short story longer and more boring - the stock strings are a crippler to the sound you CAN get out of the VM-Jazz - and if you try something with some lower backbone to them, you'll be mucho happier with the sounds you hear from the Squier.
I agree that a different set of strings can make the world of difference. It's the first thing I do these days is take the stock strings off and put some heavy flatwounds on... but that's just my tastes. A decent / different string will make a lot more difference to the tone compared to considering whether a fretboard is made of maple or rosewood. Depending on how great your musical ear is most bass players can't hear anything more than the subtlest of differences (if any) to the tone when comparing fretboards
4. I don't have a strong preference, it depends on the vibe of the finished bass. I used to insist on maple fretboards until about 7yrs ago. Now most of my basses are rosewood boards but I still have a lot of fun with the maple fretboarded ones I've still got. Equally I've had everything from Ash to Alder to Basswood bodies and it really depends on the individual bass.
5. I have no strong opinions on it. Personally I have always preferred owning a physical product so I'm not a huge fan of downloading anyway. When I have done it I have used Itunes and more recently Amazon downloads. If I want to hear a track I don't wish to buy I use Spotify if it is not on YouTube. At the risk of sounding like my Dad, I honestly wouldn't know how to illegally download any music Back in the day I taped a few songs / albums (I have a semi ironic "Home Taping is Killing Music" sticker on my bass case) but again I've always liked to own the originals. The record industry must love me!
As the OP says, how do they know which songs are being played by cover bands? I've never been asked for a set list.
I think it depends on the venue. We have been asked at a few of the bigger venues we play to fill out PRS forms but generally it doesn't happen or get properly monitored. I don't think it is economical to do every single pub band at every pub gig.
6. Welcome to the forum Fox
7. Very cool

10.
Subscription to BGM, excellent! Quite fancy that Fender Bass manual, what kind of stuff does it cover?
I too got a subscription to BGM but from my parents. That Fender Bass manual is great. It's a lot of pretty obvious stuff but loads of great photos and worth owning if you like Fenders. My wife usually does me proud bass wise every year but this year it all came a bit earlier due to a decent discount code from soundslive - so this year it was the Orange Terror 500 head.
11. I too reported him last night. He knows what he's doing. Con merchant. It saddens me that I bet a fair few young players have bought kit off him in good faith.
12. A bit overpriced for secondhand but http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Used-FENDER-Highway-...=item41558b9421
13. I watched it end, you must be pleased with that
14. It's getting exciting
15. But it must be an American Fender because he's photographed it on a USA flag
16.
I expect quite a few people are in similar situations.
100% relate to this.
17. My last gig saw my old 90s Ampeg head blow during soundcheck. I had to go through our singers solid state guitar amp plugged into my cab. Although not great it wasn't as grim as I thought. My old head wasn't worth repairing so I just saw it as an excuse to get a new head.
18. I'm still stunned that in our shopping centre the kids don't get to sit on Santa's knee anymore. They have to sit on a stool next to him. It does rather imply we don't trust Santa anymore and he's a bit Gary Glitter!?! But in answer to the OP, I'm with Wayne on this one. You know it makes sense!
19. I've been fairly settled for a while or I was until my smaller solid state rig blew & I had to replace it with the Orange Terror head. In turn this has me wanting to replace my Ampeg big rig with Orange cabs but common sense sould suggest I leave it... however common sense isn't as common as the name suggests!?!
20. It's funny how time blurs things but it'd be somewhere between my Grandfather playing Johnny Cash in Tyneside, my Mum's copy of With the Beatles, watching the Police on Top of the Pops doing Walking on the Moon (with Stuart Copeland banging his drum sticks on everything he could - which seriously impressed me!) or my Dad being an ex pro drummer being dragged out of retirement to play drums in his school's production of Jerusalem Joy (he was a Headmaster). Dad's drumming had an unsuccessful attempt at rubbing off on me. My two best friends played instruments (clarinet and cornet) so in order to fit in I decided much to my Dad's delight I'd be a drummer at the tender age of about 7yrs old. I expected immediate success. However as a drummer I took after the cat, not my Dad!
21. Hi Adam - Welcome to the forum
22. I've acquired the Orange Tiny Terror head with matching SP210 cab. I used to believe it was all about size but I think technology has come on leaps & bounds over the last decade. I won't be gigging it until the 6th Jan but I'm hoping it'll be a preferrable alternative to a big rig.
23. Interesting, must have been a 60s thing. I can understand it more chordally for guitar though. It's a funny thing with forums - some people apologise for dragging up old threads & yet occasionally people post new threads on subjects that have been covered before and almost get corrected for not using the search function first. Ya can't win, I tells thee
24.
Not necessarily. The serial number decals came from a parts bin as well.
Well you live & learn. I'm not totally surprised by that.
25. Ah, you've edited them! Bass sounds great btw. I've always secretly wanted a Hamer 12 string
