1. Pretty much as a basis you are right and just feel it around your band from there
2. Just an updated shot from today I'll update again if I get a new sofa!?!
3.
Ed Friedland gets it right, plays the same Riff 10 times, different pickups, tone settings etc with 3 or 4 techniques.
Totally agree. Demo the gear not the player
4. I'm inclined to agree. It's obviously a style of playing but I always remember when I started playing. EVERY time I walked into a music shop to try a bass I'd always have to sit through some prat slapping the bass before handing it to me. Nothing against that style but it does seem to be over represented in some gear demos. There are other ways of playing something interesting.
5. I really like the Reghin, the Starfire and that 79 P-bass
6.
Our Guitard has been looking into Les paul copies and found a website where you tell them what you want made (Anything in the world is possible) and they will give you a quote. He specced a mahogany body and neck and with all the usual Gibson goodies except a case and they came to £60-80 a piece! There was one catch though at the bottom of the page the price difference depended on if you wanted the 20 or 40 foot shipping container full
I know the site and apparently it is majorly flooding the UK. More of a Les Paul thing than a bass thing. At the moment anyway
7. I don't think it's a problem though. I sold mine for a quick sale. I'm sure if you up the value to say £800 it could still sell. ultimately things are worth whatever we want to pay for them.
8. Just a thought but perhaps they moved onto bigger and better things Then again.... does anyone's musical dream really end in happiness and glory? Very few really
9. I'm skint but have a looks amazing bump on me
10. I bought the Barry Matthews book on the 66 Slab bodied Fender Precisions http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fender-Bass-Britai...149&sr=1-10 (for those who don't know) but financially it stops there.
11.
+1, if you're paying, it's yours and the band's call, not the engineer's, if you're not happy with the sound, he's not doing his job. However, you'd need to talk through the pros and cons with him, don't simply say "I want it this way". He knows his gear and his room, and may have learned through years of experience that in the majority of cases, the way he's working gets the best results with bass. He may not be right in your particular case, but you'll probably need to get him on side to get the tone you want. C
I'm kind of in agreement here. Ultimately I think studio engineers tend to know their set ups and we tend to know our live sound. Obviously if he is making you sound different to how you hoped to sound then it is an issue. However I always go into the studio with an open mind and even bring in CDs of sounds I like sometimes to get the idea across. The engineer changed a few of my basses around from what I had planned last time and the overall impression is that I am happy
12. That's a great link full stop. Wyman always got a little buried in the mix and a lot of people assume that it is because he couldn't play. Wrong!
13.
And you use the pickup cover when playing closer to the bridge?
I do, although I don't tend to play there very often.
14. It's really just a case of doing your homework so you know it's period correct. Your level of knowledge sounds about where mine is and I've never been ripped off buying a 70s Fender (yet!)
15. All my Precisions have the thumb rest in the same position - see pic
16. I just sold a 2006 Ltd edition Fender Precision for £525, I'd say you shouldn't be paying over £600 and bear in mind that pickup configuaration won't be for everyone
17. I'm a bit late to the thread but I always get my copper shielding from EBay as it works out cheaper
18. I'm an hour away* in Berkshire and you're welcome if you don't get any better (closer!) offers *1hr 5mins according to AA Routeplanner
19. I have to say I've been enjoying my SP210 cab with my head. I have other cabs (Ampeg) but this sure is a neat little package
20. I assume you know a bit about what you are buying? Original parts are key and if you can get the full history it's a huge bonus. I own 70s Fenders which are all original with original strings / case / till receipt and 70s Fenders which have loads of parts replaced. All are well set up and play great but obviously a huge difference in resale value
21.
Easy - just retune your bass to the tune and put it back when you're done...
Absolutely! A lot of these older recordings are like this, as said. A bit annoying but not the end of the world. It's only Wyman after all, I'm pretty sure there are no advanced harmonics on unusual frets
