1. I bought the first album which is a fair step away from my usual listening choices but I just thought she looked really cool. My wife plays it all the time but I must admit it wasn't really my thing.
2. A lot of us have changed pickups. It's a fairly easy job and can make a huge difference. Personally I prefer Seymour Duncan traditional pickups like the SPB-1 over Fender but everyone is different. A pickup replacement won't massively change your resale value on the bass but it will wake up your tone. You should do your homework and make sure you are getting what you want. The 62RI pickup will give you a fairly traditional tone but there are some hotter pups out there if you want a bit more meat (not for me but these are the most common sellers). EBay often has deals on second hand pickups if that sways the arguement at home? The resale value of second hand pickups favours the buyer. Without hearing your bass the other things that can improve performance are decent strings, a better bridge and a good set up. Your bass may benefit from none, some or all of these things depending on how it plays at the moment.
3.
How many Ps do you now have?!
I have my 2006 USA going out the door on Saturday if the sale goes through which will keep it at a steady 5 which is probably two too many but I'd only spend it on sweets so what the hell! The other Basschat deal I have on the horizon will be a Jazz but with a 1976 Precision neck. So that might make it 5 and a half!?!
4.
would the Orange OBC 410 4x10 Bass Cabinet be suitable for this? not too big?
I spoke to Neil at Orange about this and he said it would. They recommend the Smart Power cabs like the SP210 or the SP212 as they have a higher power rating despite being smaller.
5. Yes & I was thinking I'd not mentioned the sound. I ran it through my Orange Terror head into an Ampeg 210 cab and my wife commented that next door's dog had started barking! I've put some foam under the bridge now and with those heavy flats it sounds like a real rumbler. I like those SPB1 pickups and with the flats it's just the sound I want. I'm gigging tomorrow night (with it I hope) but I'll put some proper shots up on Friday evening
6. unlikely to stay at 68c but following on from Happy Jack's thread.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/68-Ampeg-AMB-1-Horiz...=item43a33ddd8b
7. Bump for Ascot (Jagz) supporting the singer from Marmalade tomorrow - Thursday 18th
8. On paper the orange but looking at the pictures probably the blue
9. Yep, one maple & one rosewood. And I'm hopefully closing a Basschat deal on a 70s Jazz at the end of the month. I'm undecided if I'll strip that one. Of course if people don't like played in 70s Fenders...then this ain't the thread for them! But I try to have every other angle covered
10.
If it had a maple fretboard it'd be perfect!
In the first post I mentioned this was the second one I had done. The other one has a maple fretboard And cheers Silddx
11.
Love the pickguard!
From the first post? That's a 70s brass one and it weighs a fair bit so as you can see I didn't use it
12. Finishing it off with 55-110 Rotosound Flatwounds and my token bit of foam under the bridge yet to be added here are the latest shots from my mobile phone. I'll do some proper shots over the next couple of days
13. As you can see the wood stripped and unfinished looks a little pale so I looked at Colron wood dye. Any more contraversal colours should be experimented with under where the pickguard will be. I like the darker colour but my original vision was for the more yellow-y finish so I stayed with plan A. Whilst all this is being done I ordered a Seymour Duncan SPB-1. I acquired some cream 70s pickup covers from my mate who runs the local shop, the tuners off a 62RI Fender bass and sourced some ashtray covers from EBay. An original 1970s string tree was going cheap on EBay and the scratchplate was from an old bass from the 1990s.
14. Personally I've never used a heat gun so it's just a LOT of nitro mors and a lot more patience. That undercoat is the toughest so the body usually requires a few revisits.
15. I like stripped basses and the tatty black finish was never going to stay. Nitro Mors here we come!
16. This was a second late 70s bass that I decided to put together. At the risk of upsetting the purists, I've done these basses to play & I'm not too fussed about non original parts. I could have started this 2 months ago but I've held off on posting as I've done it. The S9 serial numbers of course relate to anywhere between 1979 and 1981. The neck is a 1979 neck and the body which came with it is possibly late 80, early 81.
17. The pic attached shows a 57RI. Impossible to tell if it's CIJ / MIJ or USA. The headstock is just a Fender logo with Precision bass underneath so you'd never tell from the pics you're attaching. I wouldn't have a clue on the body wood but Ash or Alder certainly. Having made a few basses from parts if I wanted to replicate this I'd simply buy the MIM 57 RI with the gold pickguard and strip the paint with nitro mors. Stick a badass bridge on it and you are done. Quite simple to do.
18.
It was just an excuse to post a very rare live clip of Chic playing live in the 70's to be honest.
19. Clearly I know nothing about Sadowsky then!
20. I would sincerely hope nobody would say you can't do that on a Fender bass. Personally I can't play funk like that on a Fender P but certainly there are those that can and do
21. I was going to pipe up with the sunburst quip but I've been beaten to it! Canary yellow!
