I'm obviously a better storyteller than I realised creating that extra suspense! I just hate idiots who criticise gear when you help them out! At least mine doesn't pack up mate! I would draw the line at lending to noisy bands who thrash their gear - so the Who are out! But everyone else, it's just karma
Yeah, Andys comments about the bass are usually that it goes "boom boom boom" so for him to rave about it must mean its good. Less Backache and Andy can tell the difference in the bass this time - the way forward, lol.
I think the trick with Andy is to not give a rats *@** what he thinks! When I played with them back in the mid 90s we'd always record and they'd go "I like that bit you came up with there"... I'd have been playing it 6 months that way! Tempted by one of these myself but worried it'd sound too rock for what I do.

Played well, a long night. There were 5 bands on the bill (!) and when I had stepped out to get something to eat I was met by my singer in a state of panic. One of the other bands' Jazz basses had packed up and they couldn't continue the gig. No worries, I went through and gave him the nod that he could use it. The whole band seemed relieved. At the end of their set we were on and I went to get my bass. The conversation went something like this; "Thanks for that, really got us out of a hole" "No worries, happy to help" "I'm normally a guitarist and I don't really play bass" "Oh right" "Those chrome covers really get in the way, I had to use a pick and then I didn't know where to play" "Yeah I saw you change your technique a bit" "And what's with the foam under the bridge?" "Well I like that Motown sound so it's just a piece of foam I cut to fit" "Yeah, no sustain, I nearly pulled it out!" *@**!! I didn't tell him that during his set 3 people came up and said "I wish you hadn't lent him your bass!" I'll still lend gear out but I think I need to be more selective

Hey Loz - Andy was raving on Facebook about how good rehearsal was. A seal of approval!?!

Hey Gary Just to say following our PMs I'm reading this thread. keep at it!

The Amplug I tried was dreadful but most people here are very happy with the ones they have tried / bought. I think the general view is thumbs up but a couple of others on here had experiences similar to mine. I've been toying with the idea of the Pathfinder 10 myself this week. Don't know why & interestingly I did a search on them here and nothing came back a few days ago. I don't think we discuss practice amps very much in general

A US band from Portland came over recently. They are a similar genre to us and we've been helping them, picking them up, arranging places to stay and in a moment of what some might describe as madness I've personally lent the bass player one of my favourite Precision basses. He had a cheap copy bass lined up but in a moment of empathy I figure if I'd gone to the USA for 3wks of gigs I wouldn't want to play on a $100 bass. So I lent him my MIJ 62RI. It has been with me since the late 80s and the guy was really grateful. In return they have snuck us onto the bill of a few shows and tonight we played London. It was nice jumping on the train knowing I didn't even have a patch cable to carry. I arrived and was reunited with my bass and the still pleased bassist. During soundcheck I thought I hope that bass looks half as cool on me. At the end of their set we were on and I went to get my bass.
i put together a cheap rig using a 450 watt behringer head and cheap 4 x 10 cab
I had this set up in the rehearsal studio last night & was blown away by my tone

I'm a massive fan of them (see below) and have been for years. However they are really just there to make the bass look cool as fish. I struggled a bit more when I had them on my long gone Jazz bass and they took some getting used to but I've played with them on since the late 90s and wouldn't take them off
Cant see the ad as the auction ended. Anyone pull the original for me to laugh at?
Um, you need to scrowl down mate! -
Er nothing to do with me but Steve is a mate I've known for longer than either of us would care to admit and he's looking for a bassist. They say; South Yorkshire based glam punks THE BLACK STARS are seeking a new bass player as current singer/bassist wants to concentrate on singing/fronting the band. We are currently recording our debut album “Last Train To Babylon” and are lining up some high profile support slots for 2011 Worldwide in support of its release. Influences include Buckcherry, Ramones, Motley Crue, NY Dolls, Crystal Pistol and Michael Monroe; You must have strong image, attitude and good stage presence and commitment. If this is YOU, get in touch now. http://www.joinmyband.co.uk/classifieds/ba...ed-t161247.html If you email me I'm not in the band so best go through the Join My Band link but if anyone doesn't want to use that link PM your details and I'll pass them on to Steve. Cheers
The ebay section was added to this forum by me to put the very good, the good, bad and the ugly to the test and discuss it. If someone selling a bass cant even be arsed to put accurate pictures or descriptions on an advert selling their bass - I'm sorry but they deserve to be 'ripped a bit' in here. Nothing above is offensive or abusive.
Personally I love this section & hope it is seen by most as a bit of harmless fun. Long may it stay -
Another should I leave my band thread?
Life's too short to spend time with people you don't get on with. Talk to the rest of the band and see if they're of a like mind to you & sticksman. If they are, show banjo the door. If they aren't, walk.
I'm with Rich 100% here and this is basically the mantra that I live my life by (ok, just the first half and the general sentiment).
Cheers guys as always the answer is obvious, just been talking with the drummer (I work with him) think we are gonna go for something new in the new year.
Smart decision. Best of luck -
Mind you, Dolly Parton seems to manage ok with her nails, whether on guitar or banjo...
For me different instruments require different lengths. I grew my nails on my picking hand when I was learning country guitar as I adopted the hybrid picking technique. Returning to bass I quickly realised I couldn't play fingerstyle with longer nails so I've cut mine short & let the other instruments have a rest
Well the Fender 70's classic has a chunkier neck, front to back, than most Jazzes I've tried. Maybe you need a bit more wood to keep it stable because of those mother of pearl inlays. Here's a nice one on ebay, sure is purty http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I had a 70sRI Jazz back in the 90s. The bridge pup is further back and I definitely want more of a 60s vibe. I am a sucker for those block inlays though!
I bought a 60's Classic from dub_junkie a year or so ago and couldn't play it any length of time because of the neck shape - it certainly wasn't deep enough back to front for me. I'm noodling with a roadworn at the moment and get on OK with that. I'm pretty sure most of the MIJ/CIJ 60's jazz's I've had have been fairly deep back to front.
Yep, big fan of the Japanese basses but days of googling are showing they are not so easy to get hold of in this current climate. What's the roadworn neck like? I'm definitely on the fence with them. I was a little anti at first but everybody who owns one seems to love them
My now ex-2009 American Standard had a very fast, but also very slim, neck profile. For me, it was a little cramped...and maybe I could have got used to it after a while.
I think a lot of people (me included) forget that actually if you play reguarly with an instrument you do bond with it & learn to love whatever neck profile.
The MIM classic 70s jazz has a deeper neck than any other jazz I've played.
Interesting. I just have a problem with the bridge pup being set further back. I think I may be being too picky as I'd put flats on it anyway
Mark Hoppus ones too, but that is a Precision neck. I would say Sadowsky jazzes have a somewhat different neck profile that I really like but they are expensive and its clear that some folk on here just don't like them! I would stick to a good P bass personally or get a second hand Fender and switch the neck with a Precision neck.
The Mark Hoppus ones seem to me to be P-basses with Jazz bodies so that's out. My original plan was indeed to stick a P-bass neck on a Jazz bass body and this may yet happen. Thanks everyone for the replies. Do keep 'em coming. I was also impressed with the new MIM Standards FYI.
