1.
You must rehearse REALLY LOUDLY then ... I've never yet got my OTB above about 12:00 at full-on pub gigs with a 5-piece classic rock band.
Lozz does play with the loudest drummer on the planet!
2. I'm sure I'm not the only one to think this but I still miss Bassist!
3. I've owned a few Warwick Rockcases & they were always super reliable - they were cheap too. You used to be able to buy them for £30 on Soundslive 5 or 6 years ago
4.
for what it's worth I have never sold a bass and not regretted it...
Me too. Even if you miss it you can always get a good bass further on down the line. Sell when you need the cash or the time is right
5. How did I know this would be about Musicman basses? I know loads of Fender players, me included, who view it as the last of the vintage cool club. I couldn't go any more modern than this
6. Of course Fender wouldn't be missing a trick. The beauty of the range is there is a reason to celebrate something every year! Like 12stringbassist I too have a 60th Anniversary P-bass but we must remember this is the 60th Anniversary of the Fender company and this thread is of course referring to the 60th Anniversary of the 1951 Fender Precision Bass so think chunky goodness and we're there!
7. Two amps and two heads at present; nearly always split up as follows 1978 Fender Bassman head into an old beat up Ampeg SVT USA 115E (both flight cased) Ampeg SVT USA 200w head into an Ampeg SVT USA 210E
8. That'll Be the Day (1973). Awesome
9.
What makes of amp is another question? I was looking into Orange, Hartke and Ashdown.
Yep those are fine. I (personal view) am not a massive fan of the cheaper Fender amps & equally Orange's Crush range whilst looking cool as cats aren't anywhere near as good as the valve stuff. Ampeg's entry level stuff is good fun. Even Laney are worth considering - much better than they used to be. Thinking about it more I should have suggested second hand for the amp & looking through these very pages. Amp's don't have such a good resale value as they are not as sexy as instruments. There have been some incredible bargains on Basschat recently with some virtually new kit being offered at silly prices
10. You have a nice bass already so I would aim to get a good amp as your priority. Your 30w Marshall is fine for practice but it will limit you for gigging & playing with drummers. Maximise your budget to focus on a good combo (100w minimum but ideally more). The Epi T-bird can be picked up cheaply secondhand but bear in mind you'll need a case that fits if you are taking it to rehearsals / gigs. The Squier P-bass is great & again I'd look to go secondhand. Perhaps suggesting what music / acts you like will help people with suggestions?
11. Personally I'd always go for a Fender as I'd play it at home. I don't think the market is as stable as people think & there is no guarentee these basses will rise much more....never say never though
12. Happy to stand corrected here. I'd not tried the Fender strings so will bow to your experience here. I didn't find the Trubass required much of an adjustment on the truss rod as they are low tension (hence the 115 gauge) but I did need to file the nut for that monster E string
13. Edited gig list top of page 3
14. Primarily these are designed for fretless as you suggest but do indeed work well on a fretted bass. The equivilant are Rotosounds Trubass which aside being made famous by Paul McCartney come in at double the price. Nice review.
15.
Serious suggestion - stop buying, start trading.
Very good point. I've been "recycling" gear since 2005 & it helped. Ultimately what calmed me down was buying a really expensive dream bass. Since then I still get excited about MIMs & MIJs but then try them & realise they are not as good as my favourite job done. I also stripped & worked on my main bass. The time spent created a bond I've not had with any other instrument.
16.
+1 Is it still a good price? Do you still want it? Start bargaining. If he's that skint he'll probably haggle.
My view too. Probably very genuine, first sniff someone isn't & I walk. He may have incured additional expenses.
17. Every time I come up with a nice idea or melody, my songwriter has a much better example so I tend to sit back and concentrate on making my parts as best I can as my contribution. I find bass a virtually impossible instrument to write on too*. I wish I was better in this area but I constantly work with good Rhythm guitarists who seem to come up with stuff naturally. I don't know why but I wrote my best stuff when I was 18 / 19. I'm nearly 38 now. *Nothing against bass, Lead guitarists tend to be weaker with song ideas as do singers who can't play an instrument.
18. I just had a basic Stagg type one from my local shop and it offered plenty of protection. if I still had the bass I wouldn't hesitate to ship in one of those
19. It will always depend on the individual bass. Sometimes a new bridge works wonders, sometimes new pickups. Could be a new nut, it might just be that a fresh set of quality strings transforms the bass. Work out what you think needs improving and go from there. Occasionally stock basses sound just great as they are
20. As far as the OP is concerned, no. I've played since the 80s & always managed to walk into bands I've wanted to join. I've never failed an audition & I've done a fair few sessions, hundreds of gigs and had a blast doing it all. However, all that said I wish I'd learnt to read when I was younger. You have an extra string to your bow if you can & it will increase your options in terms of going for some sessions / gigs. It doesn't have to be a major barrier but it can only be of benefit if you have an extra skill.
21. I don't mind Fender strings & have bought them quite a few times. Go for it.
