1. Welcome to the Basschat...a small world indeed (re above, we've not met!)
2.
Additional incoming fretless porn (CIJ 62RI Fender Jazz) - bought from bythesea (aka Brian) but pics courtesy of previous FS thread (cardinaljay's; thanks!)
I was about to ask how much the collection had changed since launching this thread last week....but you've answered it!!! Very nice!
3.
It's probably never going to be loud enough.
Plus one. 100w is fine for some bands & I can get by on it due to a quieter drummer and the genre we play. Ultimately though if it ain't cutting it now it probably never will & you could spend a lot of money ignoring that you have reached the stage where you need to upgrade
4.
I would personally take anything this chap says with a very big pinch of salt.
Having stripped two basses I don't think the tonal difference was all that noticeable. You gotta love an expert though
5.
I don't wear a belt.
Mine hangs below the belt.... but no sniggering at the back! I've raised & raised the height as I've got older, it just feels more comfortable - a knock on affect from my mis-spent youth
6. I have two basses which I've stripped back to the wood - 1970s ones too so I've devalued them in the process! Silddx, you must think I'm crazy! I did it as a couple of players in the 70s did it & I liked it. Much more of a visual than a tonal thing for me. I'd add I have a beautiful Sunburst bass too & I really don't have a preference
7. Gear4music is a decent company, I've bought from them
8. I've just taken the plunge and ordered one after Monday's little, ahem, explosion with my old 90s Ampeg head. I've been interested in these since before they were released and some of the recent comments have made me realise that this should be my ideal lightweight second head as a minimum.
9.
Screws still looked shiny and new. Time for plan b, only there isn't one at this stage.
If it's just the screws, simple! Just rub the heads with a dry brillo pad to make them duller. It's what I do and it works a treat. It doesn't have to be an exact science as it's such a small part.
10. I nearly started a thread like this a few months ago... we had a stage over the summer of people posting "My new purchase is the best thing in ages" threads only for the star of that thread to wind up in the For Sale section inside a few weeks. It's partly about the search for tone, one sympton is buying half way decent gear rather than holding out for the real deal. I bought a lot of £300 - £500 basses a few years ago and what eased my problem was buying what I really wanted - suddenly everything else was redundant. I also agree the ease of sharing gear on this site has probably inspired a lot of purchases. I've had some great trades and I never gig without gear acquired from Basschat. Stuff tends to hang around for at least a year before I move it on generally but I can't pretend I hold a record to be proud of.
11. Welcome Sam - I suspect I might be that bass player!
12. Welcome to Basschat
13. Welcome to Basschat - do post pics of some of those instruments in the Gear Porn thread!
14. Welcome to Basschat
15. Just worth reminding beginners that Argos don't set up guitars and you won't be getting the same service as you would certainly from my local shop.
16. I was listening to The Jayhawks last night & admiring the tasteful playing & tone of Marc Perlman - so him for mixing a rockier influence with country music. Then Chris Hillman from The Byrds. He seems to have moved onto other instruments these days & more is the pity. Finally Steve James from the 80s Stonesy Sleaze rockers The Dogs D'Amour made me pick up a bass (not literally) and I think there is still a bit of his style in my playing now. He plays fairly straight but has little flurries of interest and I would hope that is what I do. Onstage I still think I have a bit of a Paul Simonon attitude and my punk rock roots haven't left my onstage persona despite having left punk behind 15yrs ago
17.
Did the bang come from the speaker, like a louder-than-usual switch-on thump, or was it something else? Was there any smell of burning, or (if you know what it's like) any smell of an exploded electrolytic capacitor? Though that would be more of a pop than a bang in my book.
Yeah maybe more of a pop, no smell. My friend runs a music shop & we did talk quotes... I think it sounds like an excuse to buy one of those Orange Terror Bass heads
18.
Now it doesnt matter how good your songs are, 2 45 minutes sets of your own material is going to bore people. you need to throw covers in there right? But at what ratio? We usually do 6 covers out of 20 songs. Do we have too many songs? How many original songs do you guys have? Are pushing ourselves too much? We rehearse every week, is that necessary?
I don't think 2 sets of original material is too much but I guess it depends on the band and how you have built it up. A lot of bands have followings so people will know your set. We've done those gigs a lot and they can work well. I think I prefer the shorter sets personally but I don't mind the bigger ones. Rehearsals are as required. If you know your stuff and have no new material to rehearse then rehearsing is not essential. It depends on the musicians you are working with. It can be counter productive to never rehearse though. And in answer to your other question I think we have about 2 45 minute sets of all original material plus one semi rehearsed cover. We need no more at this stage but new stuff will be added.
19.
My charge sheet says I shouldn't like Cheap Trick. But I do.
Me too. Surrender is an awesome tune
20. It's different if I know the tune well anyway but with new to me material I usually listen to it on 2 or 3 different stereos to pick out the bass & only then to I pick up a bass
21. I picked up a 1979 bass with a metal pickguard & it really added to the weight. Do you find that? It looks cool but on a P-bass it made a HUGE difference which surprised me
22. I like 70s TV Cop theme tunes if that counts?
23. Any ideas people? I plugged it in for soundcheck and there was an almighty bang. The cab and cables were all fine. I now get an intermittent signal with the bass sounding quieter, the bass sounding like a flanger is plugged in and the volume going up and down but much quieter than it should be. It was my second head as I mainly use a vintage valve head but this is / was good for smaller gigs. My friend who knows a bit seemed to think it might be a dry joint? Either way it's 15yrs old and sounds like I won't be repairing it
24.
Bath last night was fine.
Very good everyone! I realised when I posted this that it didn't read too well but I couldn't be a****d to edit the post. Just to clarify last night we played in the bathroom. Sorry for any confusion caused
25. Bath last night was fine. My solid state b-gigs head popped before souncheck but we plugged me through a guitar amp into my cab & had a just about manageable tone despite the set back.
