With hardware, get a small plastic bag & half fill it with water. Shake it like mad for ages and leave the parts overnight. Then dry them off & leave them for a week. They should be a bit more pitted & vintage. Incidentally for anyone googling this thread, you can use a dry brillo pad to age plastic parts like a thumb rest or pickup covers.

60th Birthday coming soon - early present to self
Cat Burrito replied to KiOgon's topic in Gear Gallery
Cool, you'll have to review it for us -
We played The Troubadour last night in Earls Court. It was great to play a venue that has hosted Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon & Jimi Hendrix in the past. Aside the fact we played well, my night was made by my guitarist describing me as "playing a blinder" & "the best thing on that stage". A really good night

Hi Rob. Welcome to Basschat

I love hearing stuff like this. I stopped playing at 27 as I thought I was too old ( ) and started again when I was 31 / 32 as I realised stopping was silly. I've seen bass players in their 70s since and I plan on just keeping going. Enjoy the gig & fair play to you!

E-Bay Dispute - URGENT Help Needed!!!!!!
Cat Burrito replied to bassatnight's topic in General Discussion
I've queried something as a buyer (non-delivery of a service) and I had to go through quite a long winded process to get my money back. Maybe paypal rip the money back from the seller immediately but hang on to it whilst they make the unhappy buyer jump through hoops?
Tis true but luckily they look after the money whilst it sits in Paypal's high interest account Re OP, it does seem that had he contacted you first he could have saved a lot of silliness. Hopefully he'll leave your feedback alone. He does like the bass & a full postage refund is very generous -
Well if you can't laugh at yourself...

'80s Squier JV and SQ P Basses - JapNotSoCrap?
Cat Burrito replied to Paul S's topic in Bass Guitars
I've either owned / played 3 Silver Series late 80s Squiers, 2 were excellent & one was a bit heavy but generally very nice. I don't tend to believe in a certain type of instrument being better than another as a blanket rule because I've played some lovely MIMs (for example) & some absolute dogs too -
Is this Carry On Basschat?
(maybe it would if you played up at the highest frets a lot but I never venture up to that dark, murky other world!)
I'm not allowed up there anyway -
Depending on what your budget is, they often have 70s Jap tele basses on EBay. The CIJ 51RI is especially nice and it may be worth holding out for a second hand one. The Squiers are good fun too

USA Fender Precision Bass £525 NOW SOLD
Cat Burrito replied to Cat Burrito's topic in Basses For Sale
Cheers John - I think in the current climate things are selling but people take a bit longer to decide. I'm in no hurry but will be looking to get rid of it during October. Oh & I missed off, I'm not really looking for trades. I tend to play P-basses only but could consider a nice Jazz IF it has a chunkier neck (or ideally an old Jazz with a 70s P-bass neck on it!) -
Quite the bargain but you should take some better pictures in the day as I'm sure these aren't doing it justice

I've been downsizing recently and I've decided to get rid of my 2006 60th Anniversary American Fender Precision bass. Ultimately it's an American P-bass so I'll try and avoid the usual selling cliches and just give you some facts (no promises though!). I bought it from new from Dawson's in Reading and it has actually only been gigged once, and that was just at an open mic night. I wanted to keep this for recording & I've used it on my bands new unreleased album. Currently it is strung with rotosound trubass black nylons but I have some standard gauge (new) Rotosound roundwounds 45-105 that I can put on as a more traditional alternative if you wish prior to shipping. It was sold with an off white scratchplate which I replaced with a Fender USA replacement - however I will include the original too. Fender were going through their S1 switching phase at this time and I was not a fan. So it currently has a Wizard pickup in it and no S1 switching. However again I have kept the original AV 62RI pickup and the S1 switching so you can flip it back to stock if the mood takes you. I've taken some rubbish phone snaps tonight but I found some earlier shots with the original pickguard too. The downside to the sale is that I'm keeping the original case. I've used it consistantly since buying to transport my other basses and it's customised beyond the point of resale! I will however ship this with a hard case though. The case is really just to protect it from Royal Mail and not to be seen as any sort of deal clincher. It's UK only and shipping is included in the £575 asking price. Paypal is best for me Condition wise, it's in good condition as I wasn't gigging it heavily. The original pickguard has the plastic film on it but the current one has two small drill holes where an ashtray cover went over the bridge. The neck is straight and the body has no knocks or dinks. The orange is called Sunset Orange Transparent so the wood shows through. Here is a youtube clip of the bass in a session I did a few months ago. I'm not looking for comments on the song (not my band) or even a critic of my playing (I really don't want that!) but it shows that this sounds as you'd expect a P-bass to sound. Oh & for the record I too struggle with the text in the YouTube clip but it was a session for a mate and not my band! My feedback is in the link below. I know there is a recession but I reckon this is priced fairly. If it doesn't shift in a few days this will be listed on EBay so I don't expect it to be here in a few weeks.

I always wanted one of those. Good price too.
Thanks for the tips so far received everyone . . . keep em' coming if you know of anything else I ought to check out to get that vintage precision vibe ? And as suggested I will look into the cap . . . but I'm gona change the pickup anyway, as the one fitted really has got that thick overwound muddy sound that I dont like that much.
I wanted to share a couple of tips as I've been searching for a vintage vibe too. The danger with the "chat" aspect of Basschat is that one persons "woody" is another person's "muddy" and without soundclips it's not always easy to get across what players mean. Ultimately it's a combination of things that help go towards a vintage precision vibe. I use a vintage Fender Bassman tube head through a 1x15 cab. I've had some nice tones out of 4x10 but the 1x15 seems to get that vibe for me. It's a fine line though and I also occasionally just take out a 2x10 which can also deliver a great tone. In terms of the P-bass the pickup does make a difference (& I think you are right, you've made your mind up to change it and you should). The change from roundwound to flatwounds was also one of the biggest changes in my tone. I held off doing this for over 10yrs and I now view that as a waste of 10yrs. I started off as a plectrum player who rested my hand on the bridge. About 12 years ago I moved to playing between the pickup and the neck with my fingers and this again was a huge difference in tone. I now also use the volume and tone controls on my bass a lot more (I always used to be 10/10). A recent addition has been foam under the strings by the bridge. This is hidden as I use ashtray covers. The foam is a James Jamerson trick. And of course the aforementioned tone cap too. Of course you can mix it up and I did a session recently where I used a pick (the guy from R.E.M. uses a pick with flatwounds) so it's just a case of experimenting with stuff and finding what works for you.

I think the age old lesson for those with horror stories is try before you buy.
-
I keep mine in cases but whatever is getting played at the moment is always out on display just on a hercules A frame stand, ready to be played at any given moment. I love the look of those American fuel pump displays but there is a lot to be said for being able to just grab an instrument & I worry that you can't do that with a lot of displays
All the MIJ / CIJ Fenders I've played have been excellent quality - whether export or non-export.
My thoughts exactly. It has been said that the export aren't quite as good as the non export but I can't say I have ever noticed. It's all good

Something "A bit different" for you...
Cat Burrito replied to RhysP's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
and yet still nobody has bought it despite the extra publicity Basschat has given it!? edited for my woeful typing! -
I use a mix of Wizard Trads, Seymour Duncan SPB-1 & the SD Antiquity range in my P-basses for a more vintage vibe. The Wizard stuff gets raved about a lot but in my mind SD just pips it. That said the UK stock is low right now & I've had an SPB-1 on order for a while now (about 3wk wait). I'd also agree with Ou7shined in trying a different tone capacitor. There is a guy on EBay who sells decent vintage spec ones. And I take it that you have experimented with your amp settings?

Potentially me too depending on location (a lot of the ones suggested are good for me)
