I've done hundreds of gigs over 20yrs+ and definitely gone through a lot of the sentiment of the OP. However lately we're getting a lot of decent gigs so it keeps things really fresh. I agree take the rough with the smooth. Also we play a lot of different places so I like the fact I show up in anywhere from Reading to Manchester to London to Newport. It it stops being fun I would stop doing it. Simple as. I've probably enjoyed playing live more now as I'm older than I did when I was younger and that is quite something

I'm currently stripping a late 70s body (pic attached) & mods were very common back then. I'm mildly annoyed as the seller didn't mention this had been modded & I passed over a cheaper body because it had also been modded. I like the colour of yours but I think you'll struggle to put a year to it

I was never a fan of MIM standards but the 2009 ones I've played Fender appear to have seriously raised their game. I played a MIM Jazz next to a USA Jazz and whilst the USA was better, it wasn't £300 better in my opinion. Certainly if I was starting out now (assuming I had an income) I'd go for a MIM bass.

I've done hundreds of gigs since starting playing over 20yrs ago & I find it very easy onstage. I think performing is a craft like playing and it's something that gets easier with practice. It helps to play in bands you like & not worry about who looks cool or plays best. For many of us music is primarily about enjoyment

I'm a big fan of Wizard Trad pickups and Seymour Duncan. With SD I've used Antiquity and SPB1. I go for traditional / vintage tones personally and always favour passive. I've learnt strings, technique and amp choice / settings make a huge difference too to your tone. I've tried other makes and just settled with what I know & like

I'll never forget being in the Vintage & Rare Guitar Shop in Bath and they had a 51RI P-bass. When I asked about it the guy in the shop was really pompous and kept saying that Fender basses weren't invented in 1951. I struggle to think of a better example of somebody talking a customer out of sale. edited because I type like a 3yr old!

Could well be after market. I was 7yrs old in 1980 so don't pretend to be an expert here. The seller I bought from said it was a 1980 scratchplate. My friend who runs the local guitar shop & is a bit older says these were quite (or "more") common back in the early 70s/80s. I assumed it to be a limited edition run but I was hoping there might be someone who knows more, hence the querying thread prior to the outright hard sell. Thanks for the replies.

I'm no expert but I have 1978 USA Fender tuners in my MIJ neck, no problem. I'm surprised at the difference in size that you describe. I assumed they were all pretty much of a standard. The reissue ones presumably would be ok. I have some USA 62RI ones about to go into a 1979 & again I am not anticipating any difficulties

The bass player in my singers last band got around on the tubes with a double bass so it can be done. I've gigged in London using public transport although as we're 70 miles west we tend to use cars mainly

Just after a bit of advice really. I've recently picked up an S9 serial number Fender Precision. The neck dates to 1979 but of course these serial numbers were used from 1979 - 1981. I'm (sort of) restoring it but I'm not going to use the original pickguard. It's a cool looking brass one but being solid brass it isn't the lightest I'm probably going to sell it on. Obviously it's around 30yrs old & quite unusual. I don't like these sellers on EBay that charge $200 for tuners etc but wondered what would be a fair deal to offer it for. I was thinking about £50 incl UK p&p. Does that sound fair? It's obviously not for everyone's tastes but I reckon some people would really go for it. Oh & I'm looking at a gigging bass so not interested in keeping it for resale value - other original parts are needing to (have been!) sourced anyway I thought it looked quite good against the black & sunburst (pics attached)

I played a Vintage one that was sub £200 that seemed nice. I know you say don't mention Olp but they come up often enough on here & are nice for the money too
